The Secondary Planets (Upagrahas)

In Hindu astrology, besides the primary planets (Grahas), there are secondary (Upagrahas) and tertiary (Upopagrahas) planets. These invisible mathematical points are derived from the Sun's position and have significance in both natal and progressed horoscopes.

The five Upopagrahas are computed sequentially from the Sun's longitude:

1. Dhuma = Sun's longitude + 133°
2. Patha = 360° − Dhuma
3. Paridhi = Patha + 180°
4. Indrachapa = 360° − Paridhi
5. Sikhi = Indrachapa + 17°

Worked Example

If the Sun is at 114°25' (Cancer 24°25') in the Standard Horoscope:

Dhuma = 114°25' + 133° = 247°25' (Sagittarius 7°25')
Patha = 360° − 247°25' = 112°35' (Cancer 22°35')
Paridhi = 112°35' + 180° = 292°35' (Capricorn 22°35')
Indrachapa = 360° − 292°35' = 67°25' (Gemini 7°25')
Sikhi = 67°25' + 17° = 84°25' (Gemini 24°25')
