Varshaphala Part 8: Muntha — The Progressed Ascendant and Its Powerful Influence
In Part 7, we learned to time events using Varsha Dasas. Now we explore the unique Tajaka concept that physically links your birth chart to each annual chart — the Muntha.
Part 8 of 21 • Technical Framework • Covers: Chapter 6 — Muntha (Articles 57–59)
The Muntha is a unique feature of Tajaka astrology — a mathematical point that advances one zodiac sign per year from your birth ascendant, creating a direct and permanent link between your natal chart and every annual chart for the rest of your life.
Unlike any concept in Parasari or Jaimini systems, the Muntha serves as a "progressed ascendant" whose house position in the annual chart, along with its lord's strength and aspects, significantly colors the overall tenor of the year.
How to Calculate Muntha
The Formula:
Muntha Sign = (Birth Ascendant Number + Years Elapsed) mod 12
Where Aries = 0, Taurus = 1, ... Pisces = 11 (or equivalently, add sign numbers and take the remainder after dividing by 12)
Aries = 1, Taurus = 2, ... Aquarius = 11, Pisces = 12.
This is the age completed (years past), not the current year number.
The remainder gives the Muntha sign number. If remainder is 0, the Muntha is in the 12th sign (Pisces from Aries, etc.).
Worked Example: Standard Horoscope
Birth Ascendant: Kumbha (Aquarius) = sign number 11
Years elapsed: 23 (entering the 24th year)
Calculation: 11 + 23 = 34. Divide by 12: 34 ÷ 12 = 2 remainder 10.
Sign 10 = Makara (Capricorn)
Muntha position: Capricorn 12° (the degree is carried from the birth ascendant's degree).
Muntha Lord: Saturn (lord of Capricorn).
Muntha Results by House Position
The house in which Muntha falls in the Progressed Horoscope gives an immediate overview of the year's general character. Here are the results for all 12 house positions:
Favorable houses for Muntha: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th
Unfavorable houses for Muntha: 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 12th
Muntha Lord and Planetary Aspects
The condition of the Muntha lord is critical. The year will generally be favorable if the Muntha lord has favorable aspects with a benefic planet. If malefics are involved in an unfavorable aspect with the Muntha lord, the native suffers from ill-health.
General Rule for Muntha
The year in question will generally be favorable if the Muntha lord has favorable aspects with a benefic planet. Unfavorable results follow if Muntha falls in houses 4, 6, 7, 8, or 12. Responsibility and elevation come when Muntha is in houses 9, 10, or 11. New occupation or job is indicated when Muntha is in houses 1, 2, 3, or 5.
Specific planetary aspects on the Muntha or its lord produce particular effects. When the Sun conjoins or aspects Muntha favorably, friendship with political personages and authority figures results. Mars brings success over enemies but also risk of inflammation or surgical treatment. Jupiter indicates marriage (if unmarried), promotion, and business improvement. Venus brings marriage, house-building, and general improvement. Saturn causes mental restlessness, loss of a relative, and unnecessary expenditure.
Standard Horoscope: Muntha is in the 1st house (Capricorn) — one of the most favorable placements. The Muntha lord is Saturn, who is also the Lagna lord and the birth ascendant lord. Saturn is the strongest planet by Panchavargeeyabala (11.75). This triple lordship combined with 1st-house Muntha indicates a year of fresh sources of income, elevation in status, and good vitality — all of which actually manifested in B.V. Raman's 24th year.
