Varshaphala — The Hindu Progressed Horoscope (Complete Guide)

In Part 9, we covered the first seven yogas including the crucial Ithasala and Easarpha. Now we complete the remaining nine yogas and provide the master reference.

Part 10 of 21 • Yogas & Sahams • Covers: Chapter 7 — Yogas (Articles 69–77)

Section: Varshaphala Part 10 Tajaka Yogas Part 2

The remaining nine yogas cover increasingly specific scenarios — from Moon-enhanced Ithasala (Kamboola) to the completely powerless Durupha. Each adds nuance to your interpretation toolkit.

8

Kamboola Yoga

Result: Generally favorable
Favorable

Formation: An Ithasala Yoga exists between two planets, and the Moon joins this Ithasala — either by aspecting one or both of the planets involved, or by being positioned within the yoga's orb zone.

Strength gradation: The yoga is strong, medium, or weak according as the planets and the Moon are themselves strong, medium, or weak by Panchavargeeyabala.

Significance: The Moon's participation amplifies the Ithasala, making fulfillment more certain and adding an emotional or public dimension to the outcome.

9

Gairikamboola Yoga

Result: Moderate fulfillment
Favorable

Formation: The Moon is conjoined with any other planet (whether or not they form a formal yoga), and simultaneously another planet has just entered the sign — creating a fresh energy. This combination indicates moderate positive results through a somewhat indirect mechanism.

10

Khallasara Yoga

Result: Disappointment in all undertakings
Unfavorable

Formation: The lord of the ascendant is sandwiched between the Moon and another planet, and there is no mutual intermingling of orbs (Deephamsas) between any of the three. All three planets are isolated from each other despite their sequential positioning.

Significance: Complete disappointment in all undertakings. The Lagna lord is trapped between two planets it cannot connect with — symbolizing isolation and inability to achieve objectives.

11

Radda Yoga

Result: Success after much trouble
Mixed

Formation: An Ithasala Yoga is present, but one of the planets involved is in retrogression, combustion, or within the orb of the Sun. This weakened state transforms the Ithasala into Radda.

Significance: The objective will ultimately be achieved, but only after considerable struggle, delays, and tribulation. Success comes — but at a price.

Special case: If the Ithasala-turned-Radda occurs between planets in Kendras (angular houses) and Apoklimas (cadent houses), there will be initial success followed by failure later on — essentially a reversal.

12

Dupparikutha Yoga

Result: Fulfillment of desires and ambitions
Favorable

Formation: A slow-moving planet that is exalted, in its own house, or otherwise auspiciously placed enters into Ithasala with a faster-moving planet that is NOT in exaltation or own house. The strong slow planet dominates the yoga.

Significance: Fulfillment of desires and realization of ambitions. The strong, dignified slow planet pulls up the weaker fast planet, enabling success.

Exception: If the faster-moving planet is retrograde or combust, the yoga cannot function — the faster planet is too weakened to receive the benefit.

13

Duttota Yoga

Result: Success through another person's help
Favorable

Formation: Both the ascendant lord and the significator of the event are weak, but one of them has an Ithasala with a third planet that is exalted, in its own house, or otherwise strong. The strong third planet rescues the situation.

Significance: Success is achieved through the help or intervention of another person — represented by the strong third planet. The native's own planets are too weak to deliver results on their own, but a powerful ally steps in.

14

Thambira Yoga

Result: Fulfillment of desires
Favorable

Formation: A faster planet that is strongly disposed is at the end of a sign and is about to form Ithasala with a slow-moving planet positioned in the next sign. The yoga is on the verge of completing — the fast planet is about to cross the sign boundary to meet the slow planet. Result: desires are fulfilled, but the timing may involve waiting until the "crossing" takes place.

15

Kuttha Yoga

Result: Fulfillment of desires
Favorable

Formation: A planet in the ascendant is aspected by a planet occupying a Kendra (angular house: 1, 4, 7, 10) or Panapara (succedent house: 2, 5, 8, 11), and the aspecting planet must be in its own house or exaltation. A strong, dignified planet in a powerful position gives its blessing to the planet in the ascendant.

16

Durupha Yoga

Result: Completely powerless — no good results
Unfavorable

Formation: A planet in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house that is also debilitated, in an enemy's sign, retrograde, or combust enters into Ithasala with another planet that is similarly afflicted. Two weak, damaged planets forming a connection.

Significance: Such a planet is completely powerless to produce any positive results. When both parties in an Ithasala are severely compromised, the yoga collapses entirely. This is the worst-case scenario — not just failure, but an inability to even begin.

B.V. Raman's Assessment of the Yogas

"The Tajaka Yogas are combinations involving certain mutual aspects and I feel fully convinced of their significance in the interpretation of a Varshaphal chart. In Horary Astrology also, these yogas will be found to be of much advantage."

B.V. Raman

Raman affirms his conviction in the practical value of these yogas for both annual and horary work. However, as we'll see in Part 12 (Hints for Judgment), he takes a nuanced view — noting that some astrologers attach great weight to these yogas while others consider them unnecessary. Kesava, one of the founding Tajaka authors, apparently didn't emphasize them at all.

The key takeaway: Ithasala and Easarpha are universally important. The other yogas add refinement and nuance for those willing to invest the analytical effort.
