Prasna Marga Chapter 18: Progeny and the Astrology of Creation - A Modern Guide

Prasna Marga — Modern Reader's Guide

A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology text by Harihara, translated by B.V. Raman.

Chapter 18 of 32 • Stanzas 1–64 • Topics: Santhathi Prasna, Beeja & Kshetra (Seed & Field), Timing Conception, Karmic Curses

Section: Prasna Marga Chapter 18 Progeny

Following the chapter on marriage, Chapter 18 tackles the deeply emotional topic of Santhathi Prasna (Questions regarding Children). In the ancient Vedic worldview, bringing new life into the world was not just a biological act, but a spiritual duty to honor one's ancestors (Pitris).

This chapter provides a profound look at the mechanics of fertility. It moves beyond simple "yes/no" predictions to diagnose why a couple might be struggling—examining the physical vitality of the partners, the mathematical timing of conception, and the unseen "karmic blockages" inherited from the past.

"A query regarding children should be made thus: 'Will this person get a son from this woman...'"

Stanza 3

1. Beeja and Kshetra (The Seed and the Field)

Prasna Marga, Chapter XVIII, Stanzas 4–5

Vedic astrology uses a beautiful agricultural metaphor for human reproduction. The husband provides the Beeja (Seed) and the wife provides the Kshetra (Field/Womb). Both must be fertile and harmonized for life to take root.

Diagnosing the Husband (Beeja)

Read from the Lagna (Ascendant) and the 5th House from it. If these lords are in combustion (too close to the Sun), the "seed" lacks the subtle, vital energy needed for impregnation, even if medically normal.

Diagnosing the Wife (Kshetra)

Read from the Arudha Lagna (Directional Ascendant) and the 9th House from it. If these lords are in combustion, there is a subtle energetic blockage in the "womb."

Note on Houses: In ancient astrology, the 5th House rules children for men, while the 9th House rules children for women.

2. Adoption, Delay, and Loss

Prasna Marga, Chapter XVIII, Stanzas 7–13

The text outlines specific planetary combinations that point to different outcomes regarding children:

  • Childlessness: Occurs when the 5th lord is hemmed in between malefics without benefic support.
  • Loss of Children: If the 5th lord is debilitated, combust, or sits in the 8th house while the 8th lord sits in the 5th.
  • Adoption: If the 5th house is ruled by Saturn or Mercury (the neutral/barren planets) and is aspected by Saturn and Gulika. Interestingly, adoption is also indicated if a strong benefic occupies the 5th house but is disconnected from the 5th lord.

3. The Mathematics of Conception

Prasna Marga, Chapter XVIII, Stanzas 32–44

When a couple asks, "When should we try?", the astrologer doesn't just guess. They calculate the Yogasphuta (a mathematical focal point) by adding the longitudes of the Ascendant and a specialized point called Yamakantaka.

The text provides a highly specific formula to find the exact window for a fruitful union:

The Fertility Formula:
Year: When Jupiter transits the sign of [Lagna + Moon + Jupiter].
Month: When the Sun transits the sign of [Sun + Moon].
Day: When the Moon transits the Dwadasamsa (1/12th division) of [Lagna + Moon].

Additionally, the biological cycle is respected: Conception is supported when the woman's menstrual flow begins under the aspect of Mars, and sexual union occurs later under the aspect of Jupiter.

4. Unseen Blockages: The Theory of "Curses"

Prasna Marga, Chapter XVIII, Stanzas 54–64

Sometimes, there is no medical reason for infertility. In these cases, Vedic astrology looks to karmic baggage, described metaphorically as "curses." These are concentrated forms of negative thought vibration from the past that block the creation of new life.

The Affliction The "Curse" Modern Psychological Translation
Rahu in the 5th HouseCurse of the Serpent GodEnvironmental toxicity, or breaking deep natural/ecological laws.
Saturn + Gulika in 1st, 5th, or 9thAncestral Curse (Manes)Unresolved generational trauma; ancestors who felt abandoned or unhonored.
5th Lord with Mars or 6th LordCurse of EnemiesHostile environments or direct malice from others blocking growth.
Malefics in 4th, Saturn with 5th LordMother's CurseDeeply strained maternal relationships or maternal trauma rejecting motherhood.
Malefics in 9th, Saturn with 5th LordFather's CursePaternal bitterness or failure to honor paternal lineage.

The Cure: Whether you view these as literal spirits or psychological metaphors, the Vedic remedy is the same: Acts of profound healing, charity, and honoring the neglected relationships (e.g., serving the elderly to clear an "ancestral curse").
