Prasna Marga Chapter 19: The Mathematics of Fertility - A Modern Guide

Prasna Marga — Modern Reader's Guide

A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology text by Harihara, translated by B.V. Raman.

Chapter 19 of 32 • Stanzas 1–30 • Topics: Progeny in the Natal Chart, Beeja Sphuta (Seed), Kshetra Sphuta (Field), Karmic Blockages, Family Extinction

Section: Prasna Marga Chapter 19 Children in Natal Chart

While Chapter 18 dealt with horary (question-based) astrology regarding children, Chapter 19 looks at the same subject through the lens of the Birth Horoscope (Jataka).

In Vedic astrology, medical normality is not the only requirement for fertility. A person might be medically healthy but lack the subtle, energetic vitality required to create life. This chapter provides the mathematical formulas—the Beeja Sphuta and Kshetra Sphuta—to measure that exact biological and spiritual vitality.

"There will be no issue if there is no strength for kshetra (in the female horoscope) and beeja (in the male horoscope). Hence an examination of these is necessary."

Stanza 3

1. The Planets of Fertility

Prasna Marga, Chapter XIX, Stanza 4

Fertility is not governed by a single planet. It is a combination of different biological elements.

For Men (Beeja / The Seed):

  • The Sun: Provides the vital life force and the spark of consciousness to impregnate.
  • Venus: Governs the physical substance (semen) and reproductive health.
  • Jupiter: The universal Karaka (significator) of children.

For Women (Kshetra / The Field):

  • Mars: Governs the nature of the blood and the physical lining of the womb.
  • The Moon: Controls the emotional capacity to bear children, the hormonal cycles, and the fluids of the body.
  • Jupiter: The universal Karaka of children.

2. Calculating Beeja and Kshetra Sphuta

Prasna Marga, Chapter XIX, Stanza 11

To determine if a person has the energetic capacity to reproduce, the astrologer adds the longitudes of the vital planets together to create a single focal point (Sphuta) in the zodiac.

Beeja Sphuta (Men)

Formula: Sun + Venus + Jupiter
The Test: If this point falls in an odd sign (Aries, Gemini, etc.) and an odd Navamsa, the "seed" is potent and fertile.

Kshetra Sphuta (Women)

Formula: Moon + Mars + Jupiter
The Test: If this point falls in an even sign (Taurus, Cancer, etc.) and an even Navamsa, the "field" is fertile and receptive.

Afflictions: If these points are aspected by or conjoined with malefics (Saturn, Rahu, Ketu), their strength is reduced. Neutral planets (Mercury) also weaken them, while benefic planets strengthen them.

3. The Two Roots of Infertility

Prasna Marga, Chapter XIX, Stanzas 15–16

If the Beeja or Kshetra is found to be weak, the text divides the cause into two categories:

  • Internal and Natural: Caused by a biological dislocation of the three humours (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). The remedy requires medical treatment alongside lifestyle changes.
  • External and Karmic: Caused by the hidden attacks of unseen forces or unresolved karmic debts (sins from past lives). The remedy requires spiritual action (Japa, Daana, charities) to balance the energetic ledger.

4. Family Extinction (Vamsa Cheda)

Prasna Marga, Chapter XIX, Stanzas 22–30

In the ancient world, the continuation of the family lineage was of paramount importance. The text lists several severe planetary combinations that indicate the extinction of a family line:

If these severe conditions are present, the individual is advised that having biological children is unlikely, and they may not even have the opportunity for an adopted son.
