Prasna Marga Chapter 8: Arudha Analysis - A Modern Guide

Prasna Marga — Modern Reader's Guide

A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology text by Harihara, translated by B.V. Raman.

Chapter 8 of 32 • Stanzas 1–131 • Topics: The Six Vital Signs, Planetary States (Avasthas), Disease Mappings, Vegetation Indicators

Section: Prasna Marga Chapter 8 Arudha Analysis

In Chapter 8, we move from the "what" and "how" into the deep analysis of the Arudha — the physical anchor of a horary query. While Chapter 7 used numbers, Chapter 8 uses signs and states .

The core philosophy here is that the moment of a question is not just a point in time, but a point in space and biology. The astrologer doesn't just look at the rising sign; they look at six different signs simultaneously to understand the soul, body, and surroundings of the questioner.

"In Prasna Kriya, six Rasis, viz., Arudha, Lagna, Navamsa Lagna, Chatra, Sprishtanga and Janma should be examined."

Stanza 1

1. The Six Vital Signs

Prasna Marga, Chapter VIII, Stanzas 1–6

To get a 360-degree view of a situation, the text requires examining six specific reference points:

Sign (Rasi) What it Represents
Arudha The physical direction and immediate situational energy.
Lagna The rising sign of the moment (The "Self").
Navamsa Lagna The deeper, internal strength or fruit of the situation.
Chatra The "Umbrella" or protective aura (calculated via the Sun).
Sprishtanga The sign corresponding to the body part touched by the client.
Janma The client's original birth Moon sign.

The Rule of Health: If these signs are occupied by benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon), the outcome is healthy and successful. If occupied by malefics (Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Sun), expect wounds or disease in the body parts governed by those signs.

2. The 7 Planetary States (Avasthas)

Prasna Marga, Chapter VIII, Stanzas 7–13

A planet is not always "at its best." Its power depends on its Avastha (State). The text maps these states to the human lifecycle:

Avastha Human Equivalent Condition of the Planet
Atibalya Infant 1 day after combustion (invisible near Sun).
Balya Child 7 days after combustion.
Kaumara Adolescent Till the planet becomes stationary.
Yauvana Youth Commencement of retrogression.
Bhupa (Raja) King During retrogression (full power).
Vriddha Old / Servile 7 days before combustion.
Mrita Dead While in combustion (hidden by Sun).

Why this matters: If the lord of your Arudha is in the Raja (King) state, your query leads to mastery and dominance. If it is Mrita (Dead), your efforts will lack vitality and result in failure.

3. The Arudha Disease Map

Prasna Marga, Chapter VIII, Stanzas 15–19

Depending on which sign becomes the Arudha (where the client faces), specific health vulnerabilities are revealed:

Aries/Scorpio
Head/Eye issues, wounds.
Leo
Stomach, eyes, extreme heat.
Cancer
Watery complaints, tongue.
Gemini/Virgo
Skin, nose, breathing.
Jupiter Signs
Mental/Ear complaints.
Saturn Signs
Indigestion, leg issues.

4. Planets and Vegetation

Prasna Marga, Chapter VIII, Stanza 23

A unique feature of horary astrology is its use in locating lost objects . The planets indicate the types of flora near the location of the lost item or the outcome of the query:

Planet Tree / Plant Type
Sun Strong, large trees (e.g., teak).
Moon Trees with milky sap or water-loving plants.
Mars Thorny trees or bitter plants.
Mercury Fruitless trees.
Jupiter Fruit-bearing trees.
Venus Flowering trees.
Saturn Useless, gnarled, or dead wood.

Key Takeaways from Chapter 8
  • Situational Complexity: A single rising sign isn't enough. We use Arudha, Chatra, and Sprishtanga to get the full situational picture.
  • Energy Levels: The Avastha (State) of a planet tells you if the situation is in its "Infant" stage (weak) or "King" stage (powerful).
  • Biological Connection: The body part touched by the client (Sprishtanga) acts as a physical "sync" with the astrological chart.
  • Diagnostic Precision: Arudha sign mappings provide a quick diagnostic for the Seat of Disease.
  • Nature's Mirror: Even the types of trees near a location are encoded in the planetary positions of the moment.
