Prasna Marga Chapter 9: Longevity Analysis - A Modern Guide

Prasna Marga — Modern Reader's Guide

A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology text by Harihara, translated by B.V. Raman.

Chapter 9 of 32 • Stanzas 1–101 • Topics: Recapitulation, Longevity Analysis, The 8th House, Deha vs. Jeeva, Death Indicators

Section: Prasna Marga Chapter 9 Longevity

Chapter 9 addresses the most critical question in any astrological consultation: How much time does the person have?

In ancient Vedic wisdom, there is no point in discussing marriage, wealth, or career if the person's longevity is short. Thus, the text insists that longevity must be examined first. This chapter provides a rigorous framework for determining the length of life by analyzing the balance between the "Body" (Deha) and the "Soul/Life Force" (Jeeva).

"Longevity must be examined first and then the other aspects. What use would be the other indications in the absence of longevity?"

Stanza 3

1. The 5 Pillars of Longevity

Prasna Marga, Chapter IX, Stanzas 4–18

To calculate the life span, the astrologer must look at five specific points in the chart:

Lagna
The Body (Deha)
The 8th House
The Life Force (Jeeva)
The Moon
The Mind & Vitality
Lagna Lord
The Driver of the Body
8th Lord
The Keeper of Longevity

The Golden Rule: If these factors are associated with benefics (Jupiter, Venus, full Moon) and placed in quadrants (1, 4, 7, 10), predict long life. If they are combust, debilitated, or hemmed in by malefics (Mars, Saturn, Rahu), predict short life.

2. Deha and Jeeva — Body and Soul

Prasna Marga, Chapter IX, Stanzas 14–17, 37

The text makes a clear distinction between the physical container and the energy within it:

  • Deha (Body): Represented by the Lagna. It describes the physical health and material life.
  • Jeeva (Soul/Life): Represented by the 8th House. It describes the karmic fuel allocated for this birth.
If the lords of the 1st and 8th are mutual friends or in conjunction, the body and soul are in harmony, leading to a long and healthy life.

3. The 8 Signs of Imminent Danger

Prasna Marga, Chapter IX, Stanza 13

Even if a person seems healthy, the text lists eight specific "shadow indicators" (using Gulika) that predict a life crisis:

  1. Gulika occupies your birth Nakshatra (or its trines).
  2. Gulika joins the 8th house from your birth Moon sign.
  3. The lord of the sign where Gulika sits is also the lord of your birth star.
  4. The messenger or client stands in the 8th direction from their birth Moon sign.
  5. The gold piece (in the Prasna ritual) falls in the 8th sign from the birth Moon.
  6. The lord of your birth star stands in the 8th sign from the birth Moon.
  7. The lord of the query-time Nakshatra stands in the 8th from the birth Moon.
  8. The lord of Gulika's Nakshatra stands in the 8th from the birth Moon.

4. The Fatal Drekkanas

Prasna Marga, Chapter IX, Stanza 25

The 10-degree divisions of a sign (Drekkanas) carry specific "faces." Three of these are considered fatal if they rise at the time of a question:

Drekkana Type Locations in Zodiac
Sarpa (Serpent)1st of Scorpio, last of Cancer & Pisces.
Kola (Boar)1st of Cancer & Capricorn, last of Scorpio.
Gridhra (Vulture)Last of Leo & Aquarius, 2nd of Libra.

If the query Lagna rises in these degrees while afflicted by malefics, it indicates death even in the absence of disease.

5. The Earth Circle and the Sky Circle

Prasna Marga, Chapter IX, Stanzas 26–35

The text explains why we use two different rising signs:

  • The Fixed Circle (Arudha): Rooted in the Earth around the astrologer. It represents physical, mundane reality.
  • The Movable Circle (Lagna): Moving in the sky. It represents the cosmic, spiritual timing.

When to use which?
• Follow the Lagna if the client is a learned person, is walking around, or asks about a journey.
• Follow the Arudha if the client is sitting, lying down, in a crowded place, or asks about land and trees.

Key Takeaways from Chapter 9

  • Longevity First: Never ignore the life-span analysis. It is the foundation of all other predictions.
  • Body and Life: Balance the Lagna (Body) against the 8th House (Life Force) to find the truth.
  • The Malefic Triple: Watch out for Gulika, the 8th House, and the fatal Drekkanas.
  • Karmic blueprint: Rebirth happens to exhaust past karma; the longevity reveals how much fuel remains.
  • Confirm with Birth Chart: Prasna results are most powerful when confirmed by the Dasa and transits in the birth chart.
