Prasna Marga Chapter 7: Ashtamangala Numerology - A Modern Guide

Prasna Marga — Modern Reader's Guide

A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology text by Harihara, translated by B.V. Raman.

Chapter 7 of 32 • Stanzas 1–43 • Topics: The Ashtamangala Number, Body Diagnostics, Planetary Mappings, Elemental Mappings, Timing Death

Section: Prasna Marga Chapter 7 Ashtamangala Numerology

Chapter 7 introduces the Ashtamangala Number — a unique system of divination that uses numbers to reveal the secrets of time and the human body. While the previous chapters focused on planetary charts and environmental omens, this chapter dives into Vedic Numerology (Sankhya).

The system centers on a 3-digit number (traditionally derived from a ritual involving 108 cowrie shells, but applicable to any randomly chosen 3-digit number). This number acts as a "cosmic signature" of the query, breaking down into indicators for the past, present, and future.

"In the Ashtamangala number, the digit on the left-hand side denotes the past, the middle one the present, and the one on the right-hand side, the future."

Stanza 1

1. The Three Layers of Time

Prasna Marga, Chapter VII, Stanza 1

The Ashtamangala number is always read from left to right as a three-digit sequence (e.g., 456):

4
Hundreds
PAST
5
Tens
PRESENT
6
Units
FUTURE

Modern context: More importance is attached to the 10th (middle) and Unit (right) digits, as they deal with what is happening now and what is yet to come. If you're using this for a consultation, the Unit digit is your primary "answer" key.

2. Diagnosing the Body by Numbers

Prasna Marga, Chapter VII, Stanza 2

Each digit also maps to a physical region of the body. This is used in "Medical Astrology" to quickly find the seat of a disease:

  • Hundreds Digit: Above the Neck (Head, brain, eyes)
  • Tens Digit: Neck to Waist (Chest, stomach, heart)
  • Unit Digit: Below the Waist (Legs, lower organs)
The "Even Number" Rule: If a digit is an even number (2, 4, 6, 8), the text predicts a "disorder" in that corresponding part of the body.

Example: If the number is 247:
• Hundreds (2) is even → Head issues
• Tens (4) is even → Middle body issues
• Unit (7) is odd → Lower body is healthy

3. The 8 Planetary Rulers

Prasna Marga, Chapter VII, Stanzas 3–14

In the Ashtamangala system, numbers 1 through 8 are ruled by specific planets, animal symbols, and elements. Here is the master lookup table:

No. Planet Animal Element Nature
1SunGaruda (Eagle)EarthGood
2MarsCatFireBad
3JupiterLionEarthGood
4MercuryDogEtherBad
5VenusSerpentWaterGood
6SaturnMouseAirBad
7MoonElephantWaterGood
8RahuHare (Rabbit)EtherBad

Note: Odd numbers are generally auspicious; even numbers are challenging.

Planetary Results (Stanzas 7–14)

When a planet presides over your "Future" (Unit) digit, here is what it predicts:

Sun: Success, fame, honor from leaders.
Mars: Quarrels, fever, trouble from weapons/fire.
Jupiter: Divine grace, help from mentors, financial gain.
Mercury: Fear from animals, skin issues, trade losses.
Venus: Comforts, happiness with partner, luxury.
Saturn: Fear of death, pain, trouble from thieves.
Moon: Mental peace, domestic happiness, good food.
Rahu: Poison fear, eye/leg troubles, virulent skin issues.

4. Animal Symbols & Fatal Pairs

Prasna Marga, Chapter VII, Stanza 23

The text contains a fascinating warning system based on predatory pairs. If the "Present" (Tens) and "Future" (Unit) digits represent natural enemies, it is a sign of extreme danger or death:

Tens Digit (Present) Unit Digit (Future) Result
Serpent (5)Garuda (1)DEATH
Mouse (6)Cat (2)DEATH
Elephant (7)Lion (3)DEATH
Hare (8)Dog (4)DEATH

The logic: Ancient Vedic wisdom viewed nature as a mirror. If the present leads into its natural predator in the future, the life force is being consumed.

5. Calculating Tithi, Star, and Rasi

Prasna Marga, Chapter VII, Stanzas 32–34

The Ashtamangala number is then divided by specific constants to derive astrological signatures. For a number like 183:

  • Divide by 30 → Remainder is the Tithi (Lunar Day)
  • Divide by 27 → Remainder is the Nakshatra (Constellation)
  • Divide by 7 → Remainder is the Weekday (1=Sun, 2=Mon...)
  • Divide by 12 → Remainder is the Rasi (Zodiac Sign)
  • Divide by 9 → Remainder is the Planet
  • Divide by 5 → Remainder is the Bhuta (Element)
The Bad Relation Check: If the derived Rasi is the 8th sign from your birth Moon sign, or if the Nakshatra is the 3rd, 5th, or 7th from your birth star, the outcome will be challenging.

6. The "Rem45" Quick Test

Prasna Marga, Chapter VII, Stanzas 38–39

This is a simple arithmetic check for the overall "vibration" of the consultation:

(Root Number × 45) ÷ 8 = ?

Look at the remainder:

  • 0: Predict death or a severe life crisis.
  • 2: Loss or illness of children.
  • 4: Danger or trouble to relatives.
  • Odd Number (1, 3, 5, 7): Good health and recovery.

7. Predicting When It Happens

Prasna Marga, Chapter VII, Stanzas 40–42

The chapter ends with a complex formula to find a specific coordinate in the zodiac. When Jupiter or Saturn transits this point, the predicted major event (success or crisis) will manifest.

This involves multiplying each digit by different weights (2, 3, and 4) and adding constants based on whether the Moon is waxing or waning (336 or 648). While the math is dense, the purpose is clear: Nature gives us a timestamp for our destiny.

Key Takeaways from Chapter 7

  • 3-Digit Code: Every situation has a numerical code. Hundreds = Past, Tens = Present, Units = Future.
  • Physical Mirror: Numbers reflect the health of our body. Even digits in specific positions point to physical disorders.
  • Predatory Omens: Natural predatory relationships (like Cat chasing Mouse) are encoded in the numbers to warn of danger.
  • Cosmic Constants: Dividing the root number by 30, 27, 7, etc., connects the immediate moment to the larger planetary and stellar clock.
  • Intuition Matters: The author concludes that these mathematical predictions only come true when made with devotion to the teacher and God.
