Prasna Marga Chapter 25: Astro-Meteorology and Rainfall - A Modern Guide
A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology text by Harihara, translated by B.V. Raman.
Chapter 25 of 32 • Stanzas 1–97 • Topics: Weather Forecasting, Cloud Conception, Solar Ingress, Environmental Omens
In ancient agrarian societies, survival depended entirely on the rains. Therefore, meteorology was not a separate science; it was an integral branch of astrology. Chapter 25 is dedicated entirely to forecasting the weather.
The ancient seers recognized that the Earth's atmosphere is fundamentally linked to the gravitational and magnetic shifts of the solar system. By tracking planetary alignments (macro) and closely observing the immediate behavior of local animals and elements (micro), they developed an astonishingly accurate system for predicting deluges, droughts, and cyclones.
"When the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Saturn and Rahu are in watery signs and Mercury and Venus conjoin in a fixed sign, there will be very heavy rains."
1. The "Pregnancy" of the Clouds
Based on Brihat Samhita (referenced in Notes)
Vedic meteorology operates on a poetic but highly structured timeline. It states that clouds "conceive" water during the winter months and "give birth" to rain exactly six months (195 days) later during the monsoon.
To predict the amount of rain in the summer, an astrologer observes the sky in the winter:
- Healthy Conception: Clear skies, gentle north-east winds, soft halos around the Moon, and blood-red clouds at sunset during November/December guarantee abundant rainfall 6 months later.
- Miscarriage: If there are sudden dust-storms, meteoric falls, earthquakes, or heavy, unseasonal downpours during the winter, the "pregnancy" is ruined, indicating a severe drought in the coming monsoon.
2. Astrological Triggers for Floods
Prasna Marga, Chapter XXV, Stanzas 1–4, 83–88
The text relies heavily on the classification of Watery Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, plus the latter half of Capricorn, Taurus, Libra, and Aquarius) and Watery Planets (Moon and Venus).
The Deluge Combination
If the Sun, Moon, Mars, Saturn, and Rahu all occupy watery signs while Mercury and Venus are conjoined, expect massive, sustained downpours.
Predicting Floods
In a horary query, if watery planets (Moon/Venus) aspected by benefics occupy Quadrants (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th), floods are imminent.
3. Environmental Omens of Immediate Rain
Prasna Marga, Chapter XXV, Stanzas 26–37
Animals are incredibly sensitive to drops in barometric pressure. The text lists specific behaviors that indicate rainfall is coming within hours:
- Ants frantically moving their eggs to higher ground.
- Cats constantly scratching the earth.
- Frogs croaking loudly and fish springing out of the water onto the banks.
- Cows rushing home to be with their calves, or staring upward at the sky.
- Chameleons climbing trees and staring fixedly upward.
Atmospheric shifts: A "Mock-Sun" (a bright halo or reflection near the actual Sun), salt melting/sweating, or the sky taking on the color of a "cow's eye" (a hazy, soft hue).
4. The Sound of Rain
Prasna Marga, Chapter XXV, Stanzas 72–80
In Horary astrology, the exact moment the question is asked contains the answer. If a farmer asks, "Will it rain?", the astrologer observes:
- The First Letter: If the very first syllable out of the questioner's mouth is a long vowel or a soft, resonant consonant (Ghosha), it will rain. If it is a harsh, sharp consonant (Khara), the skies will remain dry.
- Body Language: If the questioner is touching something wet, shedding tears, or standing near a body of water when asking, a downpour is guaranteed.
Key Takeaways from Chapter 25
- The Rule of Watery Signs: Rain is strictly governed by the concentration of planets in watery signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).
- The 6-Month Gestation: Vedic meteorology predicts summer monsoons based on the atmospheric conditions of the preceding winter.
- Animal Instincts: The frantic behavior of ants, cats, and frogs are reliable, immediate indicators of dropping barometric pressure.
- The Wind Factor: Even with heavy rain indicators, the strong influence of Mercury or malefics in Quadrants acts as a "cyclone trigger," blowing the rain away.
