Prasna Marga Chapter 24: The Astrology of Statecraft and Conflict - A Modern Guide

Prasna Marga — Modern Reader's Guide

A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology text by Harihara, translated by B.V. Raman.

Chapter 24 of 32 • Stanzas 1–192 • Topics: Deva Prasna (Temples), Raja Prasna (Politics), Yuddha Prasna (War & Conflict)

Section: Prasna Marga Chapter 24 Deities Rulers

Up until now, Prasna Marga has primarily focused on the individual—health, wealth, marriage, and children. In Chapter 24, the scope dramatically expands to the collective. This is the domain of Mundane Astrology.

The chapter is divided into three major sections: Deva Prasna (assessing the spiritual health of a community through its temples), Raja Prasna (the astrology of politicians, governments, and statecraft), and Yuddha Prasna (predicting the outcome of wars, conflicts, and legal battles).

"Subjects partake of the good and the bad effects of the rulers. As the king, so the subjects."

Stanza 40

1. Deva Prasna: The Pulse of the Temple

Prasna Marga, Chapter XXIV, Stanzas 4–37

In ancient India, the temple was the heart of the community. If the community was suffering, an astrologer was called to perform a Deva Prasna to diagnose if the "Divine Presence" (Chaitanya) within the temple had been polluted or diminished.

House in Deva Prasna Signification
1st & 5thThe 'Divine Presence' and the physical Idol (Bimba).
2nd & 11thThe wealth, income, and treasury of the institution.
4thThe temple buildings, lands, and architecture.
6thPollution, thieves, and enemies trying to destroy the institution.
9thThe Temple Authorities / Management.
10th & 12thThe Priests, daily ceremonies, and festivals.

Modern Translation: These same principles are used today to assess the health of large non-profits, churches, spiritual organizations, or any community-focused institution.

Section: 1. Deva Prasna: The Pulse of the Temple

2. Raja Prasna: Statecraft and Governance

Prasna Marga, Chapter XXIV, Stanzas 38–50

When a question is asked regarding a nation, a government, or a political leader, the astrological houses take on macro-level meanings. The Ascendant becomes the President/Prime Minister.

  • 2nd House: The national treasury and economic policies.
  • 3rd House: The defense forces and neighboring countries (border skirmishes).
  • 5th House: The inner circle, advisors, and cabinet ministers.
  • 6th House: The political opposition and national debt.
  • 9th House: The ideological policy of the government (Malefics here indicate deep, systemic corruption).
  • 10th House: The administrative machinery and the execution of laws.

3. Yuddha Prasna: Will There Be War?

Prasna Marga, Chapter XXIV, Stanzas 57–95

How does an astrologer predict the outcome of a conflict (whether it be a literal war, a hostile corporate takeover, or a brutal lawsuit)? The text provides precise rules based on the Invader (Yayi) vs. the Defender (Sthayi).

The Attack Happens (Invasion)

If the Moon is in a Fixed sign and the Ascendant is Moveable, the enemy will invade with full force. If Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus are in the 4th house, the attack will be sudden and immediate.

The Attack is Canceled / Fails

If the Ascendant is a Fixed sign and the Moon is in a Common sign, the enemy will march half-way but retreat. If malefics occupy the 4th house, the invading enemy will be utterly defeated.

The Peace Treaty: When Mercury occupies the 3rd, 6th, 9th, or 12th house, and the Ascendant is aspected by benefics, a peace pact will be signed and war averted.

4. Environmental Omens of Collapse

Prasna Marga, Chapter XXIV, Stanzas 99–117

Before a government falls or a country is invaded, nature sends warnings. The text lists severe, abnormal environmental omens that predict national disaster:

  • Trees blooming completely out of season, or dead trees suddenly sprouting leaves.
  • Birds that normally live in the wild migrating into the cities in massive, chaotic flocks.
  • Nocturnal animals being seen in broad daylight.
  • Unexplained smoke, deep cracks forming in the earth without earthquakes, or the sudden appearance of swarms of serpents.
Key Takeaways from Chapter 24
  • Macro-Astrology: The rules that govern an individual's chart scale up perfectly to govern a corporation, a temple, or an entire nation.
  • The 9th House of Policy: In political astrology, the 9th house reveals the true morality and policy of the government, exposing hidden corruption if afflicted.
  • The Moveable/Fixed Axis of War: Conflicts are judged by momentum. Moveable signs indicate swift action and invasion, while Fixed signs indicate steadfast defense or stalled momentum.
  • Nature's Oracle: Severe, widespread, and completely abnormal behavior in local flora and fauna is the universe's early warning system for socio-political collapse.
