Section: Prasna Marga Chapter 16 Locating the Lost

Chapter 16 concludes Part 1 of the Prasna Marga. It is a wildly diverse chapter that acts as a "how-to" manual for life's most urgent questions: Where is my missing relative? Where did I lose my gold? How do I win this conflict?

It also introduces rural divination methods, such as reading the future from a handful of betel leaves, proving that the Vedic astrologer was expected to find answers using whatever tools nature provided at the moment.

"Considering the movable, fixed or dual nature of the Ascendant and the Navamsa Lagna, one has to infer the whereabouts of the questioner — whether he is at home or in a far away place..."

Stanza 3

1. Whereabouts of a Missing Person

Prasna Marga, Chapter XVI, Stanzas 3–4

If someone asks on behalf of a missing person (a traveler, a runaway, or someone lost), the astrologer looks at the combination of the Lagna (Sign) and Navamsa Lagna (Sub-sign):

Lagna (Main Sign) Navamsa (Sub-Sign) Where is the Person?
MovableMovableFar away, constantly traveling.
MovableFixedFar away, but currently staying in one place.
FixedMovableIn a neighboring area, traveling around locally.
FixedFixedIn a neighboring area, staying put safely.
CommonMovableLeading a nomad's life, neither near nor far.
CommonCommonLiving nearby, sometimes traveling, sometimes resting.

The Logic: The Main Sign indicates Distance. The Sub-Sign indicates their Current Activity.

2. How to Win a Conflict: The 4 Means

Prasna Marga, Chapter XVI, Stanzas 11–12

If a client asks, "How can I achieve my objective?" or "How do I win this dispute?", the astrologer checks the strongest planet in the Ascendant or Quadrants to prescribe one of the classic Four Means of Politics (Upayas):

Sama (Gentle Persuasion)

Planets: Jupiter & Venus
Use diplomacy, arbitration, and kind words. Negotiate a peace treaty.

Dana (Gifts / Bribery)

Planet: Moon
Offer money, gifts, or financial settlements to resolve the issue quickly.

Bheda (Intimidation / Divide & Conquer)

Planets: Mercury, Saturn, Rahu
Use threats, legal notices, or exploit divisions within the enemy's camp.

Danda (Force / War)

Planets: Sun & Mars
Open rupture. Go to court, use authority, or engage in direct, forceful confrontation.

Timing Tip: Implement the strategy on the weekday ruled by the strongest planet for maximum success.

3. Locating Treasures and Lost Items

Prasna Marga, Chapter XVI, Stanzas 13–15

When asked about hidden wealth or lost items in a house:

  • If benefics occupy the 1st, 4th, or 11th houses, the item/wealth is definitely there.
  • The Direction (East, South, etc.) corresponds to the specific sign the benefic planet is in.
  • The Quantity/Value of the item depends on the dignity of the planet (Exalted = large amount; Debilitated = very little).

4. Betel Leaf Divination (Thamboola Lagna)

Prasna Marga, Chapter XVI, Stanzas 47–50

In ancient India, clients often approached astrologers offering a handful of betel leaves. The astrologer could read the entire situation just by examining the random stack of leaves.

The Reading Method:

  1. The leaves are laid out in order (1st leaf = 1st House, 2nd leaf = 2nd House, up to 12).
  2. If a leaf is fresh, broad, and soft, the area of life it represents will prosper.
  3. If a leaf is faded, torn, or eaten by pests, that area of life is in danger.

The Mathematical Formula: The astrologer counts the leaves, doubles the number, multiplies by 5, adds 1, and divides by 7. The remainder (1 to 7) points to a planet (Sun to Saturn). Where that planet sits in the sky right now becomes the Thamboola Lagna (The Leaf Ascendant), revealing the final outcome of the query.

Key Takeaways from Chapter 16

  • Missing Persons: Combining the Main Sign and Sub-Sign reveals both distance and current movement.
  • Conflict Resolution: Astrology doesn't just predict; it provides tactical strategies (Diplomacy, Bribery, Intimidation, or Force).
  • Lost Items: Benefic planets in quadrants act as a compass to locate lost items in a house.
  • Nature's Oracle: Even a stack of betel leaves contains a mathematical and visual map of a person's life, proving that the cosmos speaks through all available mediums.
