Prasna Marga Chapter 32: Ashtakavarga - A Modern Guide

Prasna Marga — Modern Reader's Guide

A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology text by Harihara, translated by B.V. Raman.

Chapter 32 of 32 • Stanzas 1–140 • Topics: Ashtakavarga, Bindus, Transit Strength, Mathematical Timing, Final Conclusion

Section: Prasna Marga Chapter 32 Ashtakavarga

We have reached the grand finale of Prasna Marga. Chapter 32 introduces the mathematical crown jewel of Vedic astrology: Ashtakavarga (The Eight-Fold Division).

If standard astrology is like reading a map, Ashtakavarga is like reading the underlying code of the matrix. It takes the geometric relationships between the planets and converts them into a point-based scoring system (Bindus), allowing the astrologer to mathematically prove exactly when a transit will be fortunate or devastating, and exactly what age major life events will occur.

"When planets transit signs with no bindus they produce only evil. Similarly when they transit signs with 8 bindus, the results will be brilliant."

Stanza 22

1. The Point System (Bindus)

Prasna Marga, Chapter XXXII, Stanzas 14–15

In Ashtakavarga, every planet donates "points" (Bindus) to different signs based on its natal position. Each zodiac sign can receive a maximum of 8 points in a planet's individual chart. The number of points a sign holds dictates exactly how a planet will behave when it transits through that sign:

Points (Bindus) Strength Result of Transit
8Maximum (Sreshta)Complete victory, huge wealth, royal favor.
7 to 5ExcellentProsperity, rising power, general happiness.
4Neutral (Madhyama)Mixed results; good and bad are equal.
3 to 1Weak (Adhama)Fatigue, loss of money, sickness, anxiety.
0CriticalExtreme danger, ruin, or death.

2. Samudaya Ashtakavarga (The Master Score)

Prasna Marga, Chapter XXXII, Stanzas 59–63

When you add up all the points contributed by all the planets in a single sign, you get the Samudaya Ashtakavarga (Collective Score). The total number of points distributed across the whole zodiac is exactly 337.

  • 30+ Points: The sign is highly auspicious. Any house falling in this sign will prosper immensely.
  • 25 to 30 Points: Average or moderate strength.
  • Below 25 Points: Weak and problematic.
The Wealth Formula

Compare the total points in the 11th House (Gains) to the 12th House (Losses). If the 11th has more points than the 12th, the native will become wealthy. If the 12th has more, they will struggle with poverty or high expenses.

3. The Three Chapters of Life

Prasna Marga, Chapter XXXII, Stanzas 70–71

The 12 signs of the zodiac are divided into three groups, representing the three phases of life. By adding up the collective points in each group, you can determine which era of the native's life will be the most prosperous.

  • Childhood (Pisces to Gemini): Total the points in these four signs.
  • Middle Age (Cancer to Libra): Total the points in these four signs.
  • Old Age (Scorpio to Aquarius): Total the points in these four signs.

Whichever group has the highest point total represents the happiest, most successful, and most secure chapter of the native's life.

4. Mathematical Timing of Events

Prasna Marga, Chapter XXXII, Stanzas 73–75

Ashtakavarga allows the astrologer to predict the exact age at which specific events will occur by summing the Bindus between planets.

Example: The Age of Misfortune

  1. Count the total number of bindus from the Ascendant to the sign occupied by Saturn.
  2. Multiply that sum by 7.
  3. Divide by 27.
  4. The resulting quotient equals the exact age (in years) when the native will face severe disease, stress, or misfortune.
The Age of Prosperity: A similar technique is used for Venus and Jupiter. The number of bindus in the sign occupied by Jupiter directly correlates to the age when the native will experience sudden wealth, fame, or the birth of a child.

5. The Grand Conclusion

Prasna Marga, Chapter XXXII, Stanzas 124–140

In the final stanzas of the text, the author, Harihara, reveals his identity, his lineage, and his devotion to the Goddess of Edakad. He summarizes the entire 32-chapter journey, from the omens of the first breath to the mathematical matrix of Ashtakavarga, leaving a profound legacy for future generations of astrologers.

"Everything contained in this treatise is based on Sastraic authority. Therefore study what is contained in this carefully and have faith in the value of the teachings contained therein and your words will never turn false."

Key Takeaways from Chapter 32

  • Data over Intuition: Ashtakavarga proves that Vedic astrology is deeply rooted in complex mathematics and verifiable algorithms.
  • Transits Require Context: A planet transiting a "good" house will still yield terrible results if that sign has 0-3 bindus in its Ashtakavarga chart.
  • The 337 Matrix: The collective score of the zodiac determines the overall strength of every house. 30+ is excellent; below 25 is weak.
  • Pinpointing Age: The sum of points between key planets (like Lagna to Saturn) generates the exact age when karmic events will manifest.
