Prasna Marga Chapter 21: Marriage Compatibility - A Modern Guide
A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology text by Harihara, translated by B.V. Raman.
Chapter 21 of 32 • Stanzas 1–69 • Topics: Horoscope Matching, The Kootas (Yoni, Gana, Rasi, Vedha), Psychological & Physical Compatibility
Chapter 21 dives into one of the most famous and widely utilized systems in Vedic astrology today: Marriage Compatibility (often called the Ashtakoota or Dasakoota system).
In ancient India, arranged marriages required an objective method to determine if two strangers could build a harmonious life together. The text breaks down compatibility into 23 distinct facets, analyzing everything from psychological temperament to physical intimacy and financial growth, all based on the birth stars (Nakshatras) and Moon signs of the couple.
"The existence of compatibility or otherwise between the couple to be married is to be ascertained on the basis of their birth stars."
1. The 5 Essential Pillars (The "Must-Haves")
Prasna Marga, Chapter XXI, Stanzas 65–69
While the author lists 23 different tests of compatibility, he pragmatically admits that finding a "perfect 23/23" match is impossible. He narrows it down to Five Essential Pillars that must be present for a marriage to survive:
- Janma Rasi (Moon Sign Agreement): The foundational harmony of their emotional minds. The groom's Moon sign should ideally be in the 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th from the bride's Moon sign.
- Lord of Janma Rasi: The planetary rulers of their Moon signs must be natural friends. This ensures basic ideological agreement.
- Vasya (Magnetic Attraction): Certain signs possess a natural magnetic pull toward others (e.g., Aries feels a strong pull toward Leo and Scorpio). Vasya ensures deep, affectionate bonding.
- Mahendra (Growth & Wealth): Calculated via the Nakshatras. It ensures that the couple will generate wealth, resources, and children together.
- Yoni (Physical & Intimate Harmony): Discussed in detail below, this ensures sexual and physical compatibility.
2. Gana Kuta: Psychological Temperament
Prasna Marga, Chapter XXI, Stanzas 32–34
The 27 Nakshatras are divided into three psychological temperaments (Ganas):
- Deva (Divine): Gentle, charitable, spiritual, accommodating (Sattvic).
- Nara / Manusha (Human): Pragmatic, balanced, driven by human desires and societal rules (Rajasic/Sattvic).
- Rakshasa (Demoniacal): Fierce, independent, aggressive, dominating, intense (Rajasic/Tamasic).
3. Yoni Kuta: Physical & Sexual Harmony
Prasna Marga, Chapter XXI, Stanzas 38–41
Vedic astrology does not shy away from the importance of physical intimacy. Every Nakshatra is assigned an animal symbol representing its primal, physical energy and sexual nature.
For a marriage to be successful, the animal energies of the couple must be friendly or neutral to each other.
Fatal Clashes (Natural Enemies)
Yoking two people with naturally antagonistic animal energies will spell disaster for the relationship. Examples of enemies include:
• Cat and Rat
• Dog and Stag
• Horse and Buffalo
• Serpent and Mongoose (or Cat)
4. Vedha Dosha: The Ultimate Dealbreaker
Prasna Marga, Chapter XXI, Stanzas 43–46
Certain constellations are mathematically opposed to each other across the zodiac. This is called Vedha (Obstruction/Repulsion).
A relationship with Vedha Dosha is plagued by an underlying, irreconcilable friction. Even if the couple loves each other or shares other compatibilities, the underlying geometry of their charts constantly pushes them apart.
5. Chittanukulya: The Loophole of True Love
Prasna Marga, Chapter XXI, Stanzas 54–55
After presenting pages of strict mathematical rules, animal archetypes, and terrifying dealbreakers, the ancient sages drop a profound philosophical truth that overrides everything else:
"If the couple love each other, they can enter into wedlock, even if there is no agreement in other ways. One who loves a girl sincerely, from his heart, should marry her. Pure love is greater than any other virtue."
The Modern Application: Astrological matching is an objective tool, incredibly useful for arranged marriages or early dating. However, it should never be weaponized to tear apart two people whose souls have already genuinely and purely connected. True love is a higher dimensional force that can burn through karma.
Key Takeaways from Chapter 21
- Focus on the Big 5: You will never find a perfect 23-point match. Focus on the core 5 (Moon Sign, Moon Lord, Vasya, Mahendra, and Yoni).
- Mind the Gana: Mismatched temperaments (especially a double-Rakshasa match) require immense emotional maturity and adjusting capacity to survive.
- Respect the Animal Spirits: Yoni agreement ensures the physical and instinctual energies of the couple are aligned rather than hostile.
- Avoid Vedha: Vedha acts as a deep, structural repulsion between two charts that is incredibly difficult to overcome.
- Love Conquers All: Pure, sincere love (Chittanukulya) supersedes all astrological mismatches and is considered the highest validation of a union.
