Chapter: 9 of 18 -- Marriage
Scope: Marriage compatibility through the 12 Kutas, the truth about Kuja Dosha, destructive constellations, Venus-Mars dynamics, and electing an auspicious wedding Muhurtha.
This is the longest and most detailed chapter in B.V. Raman's entire Muhurtha text, and for good reason. Marriage is the single most consequential decision most people will ever make. The ancient sages devoted enormous attention to ensuring that two lives brought together would flourish rather than founder. In this chapter, Raman systematically lays out the twelve factors ( Kutas ) used to judge marriage compatibility, exposes common misconceptions about Kuja Dosha (Mars affliction), and provides precise rules for electing an auspicious wedding moment.
"Marriage is not an institution for simple brute sense gratification. The idea that it is a civil contract terminable at will smacks of meanness in conception of the grand liabilities and assets between the parties to be engaged in sacred wedlock."
Raman begins by placing marriage in its full context: it is not merely a legal contract or a biological arrangement, but a religious sacrament that encompasses four dimensions of life -- Dharma (right conduct), Artha (financial position), Kama (sexual relations), and Moksha (spiritual liberation). A marriage that satisfies only one dimension while neglecting the others is inherently unstable. This is precisely why the astrological system of compatibility testing was developed: to evaluate the total harmony between two people across multiple planes of existence.
The Three Pillars of Marriage Assessment
Before any compatibility matching begins, Raman insists that three fundamental factors must be examined in both horoscopes:
- Longevity of both partners -- If either chart indicates short life, the horoscope must be rejected regardless of how well the Kutas match. There is no point in finding a perfectly compatible partner only to face early widowhood.
- Strength of the 7th and 8th houses -- The 7th house governs the spouse and married life; the 8th governs longevity of the marriage bond. Both must be reasonably strong and free from severe affliction.
- Agreement of the Kutas -- Only after the first two conditions are satisfied should compatibility scoring begin.
"The existing practice almost all over India and particularly in the South is highly defective and dangerous as horoscopes are rejected simply because they do not conform to certain kutas, while the most important factors such as longevity, widowhood, etc., are completely ignored."
This is a critical point that modern practitioners often miss. The Kutas are a secondary filter applied after verifying that both charts are fundamentally sound. Skipping straight to Kuta matching without first assessing longevity and house strength is, in Raman's words, "highly defective and dangerous."
Venus-Mars Dynamics and Sexual Compatibility
Raman devotes considerable attention to the mutual disposition of Venus and Mars in both charts, as these planets govern the sexual and emotional dimensions of marriage. Venus rules the wife, sex harmony, attachment, and family happiness. Mars provides energy, aggressiveness, and driving force. Their interplay determines physical attraction and emotional intensity.
Key principles from the text:
- When Venus and Mars are in the 7th house, the native has strong sexual instincts and should be matched with someone of similar temperament -- not someone with Mercury or Jupiter in the 7th (which indicates an under-sexed nature).
- Venus-Mars conjunction or opposition benefits greatly from Jupiter's steadying aspect. Without it, the combination can lead to excess and instability.
- The constellation in which Venus-Mars fall matters enormously: Jupiter's or Mercury's constellations are preferable, as they temper raw passion with wisdom.
- The Ketu-Venus-Mars association is particularly problematic unless the constellation belongs to Jupiter or Mercury, as it can indicate scandal in marriage.
- Trinal or quadrangular dispositions of Mars and Venus from Lagna or Moon are ideal. Even if they conjoin, being in different constellations helps.
"When sexual incompatibility sets in marriage, life proves charmless and friction arises between the couple. Therefore it is the duty of the parents to consult learned astrologers and not to entrust the work of comparing horoscopes to all persons who have no practical experience."
Astrological Indicators of Marital Discord
Beyond compatibility matching, Raman identifies specific planetary combinations in an individual's horoscope that indicate potential difficulties in married life. These should be assessed before any Kuta matching begins:
- Mars in the 7th house, unaspected by benefics -- frequent quarrels leading to misunderstandings and separation.
- Saturn in the 8th house, especially in a square to Mars -- discord, lack of mutual understanding, and want of real attachment.
- Saturn in the 7th house -- unhappiness in marriage, unless Saturn is lord of Lagna or lord of the 7th.
- Sun and Venus together in the 5th, 7th, or 9th house -- the native will lack marital happiness (per Prasna Marga ).
- A strong malefic in the 4th house, particularly Mars -- not conducive to conjugal happiness.
- The longitude of the 7th house falling in a malefic Navamsa -- frequent quarrels and misunderstandings.
- Lords of the 7th and 1st being enemies -- no harmony between husband and wife.
Raman emphasises that these combinations speak of unhappiness in marriage, not necessarily the death of the spouse or multiple marriages. The distinction is important: an unhappy marriage can often be improved through awareness, effort, and choosing the right Muhurtha, whereas fatal combinations require more serious remedial measures.
Cross-Chart Indicators of Harmony
Based on his extensive study of married couples' charts, Raman observed several patterns that indicate strong marital bonds:
- When Venus, Mars, and Jupiter in one horoscope are situated in the other horoscope in a trine, angle, or 3rd/11th positions -- this creates a powerful attraction and mutual understanding.
- When the Sun and Moon have harmonious positions between the two charts (except 2nd/12th, which creates tension) -- there is usually strong attachment.
- When the Janma Rasi of the wife happens to be the Lagna of the husband (or vice versa) -- the married life will be stable, built on mutual understanding and affection.
- When the Lagna of the wife happens to be the 7th from the position of the lord of the 7th in the husband's chart -- exceptional marital stability.
The Twelve Kutas: A Complete Compatibility Framework
The Kutas are twelve distinct factors that together provide a comprehensive picture of compatibility between two people. Eight of these are considered supremely important. Each Kuta is assigned a certain number of agreement units, and the total score (out of 36) indicates overall compatibility. Raman uses the example of a male born in Mrigasira and a female born in Satabhisha throughout his illustrations.
| # | Kuta | Max Units | What It Measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dina | 3 | Day-to-day health, general well-being, and daily compatibility |
| 2 | Gana | 6 | Temperament and character (Deva, Manusha, Rakshasa) |
| 3 | Mahendra | -- | Well-being and longevity of the couple (no units, but important) |
| 4 | Stree-Deergha | -- | Prosperity and longevity of the wife (positional check) |
| 5 | Yoni | 4 | Sexual compatibility, physical intimacy, and instinctual nature |
| 6 | Rasi | 7 | General harmony, wealth, progeny, and mutual well-being |
| 7 | Rasyadhipathi (Graha Maitri) | 5 | Psychological disposition, mental compatibility, and affection |
| 8 | Vasya | 2 | Magnetic control and amenability between partners |
| 9 | Rajju | -- | Duration and strength of the married life (critical check) |
| 10 | Vedha | -- | Affliction between constellations (must be absent) |
| 11 | Varna | 1 | Spiritual and ego development compatibility |
| 12 | Nadi | 8 | Physiological constitution, hereditary factors, and health |
| Total (scored Kutas) | 36 | Combined compatibility score | |
Note that Kutas 3, 4, 9, and 10 (Mahendra, Stree-Deergha, Rajju, and Vedha) do not contribute numerical units but serve as pass/fail checks. Their absence can disqualify a match even if the numerical score is high. Let us now examine each Kuta in detail.
1. Dina Kuta (3 units)
Count the constellation of the boy from that of the girl and divide by 9. If the remainder is 2, 4, 6, 8, or 0, agreement exists. This is a straightforward numerical test of daily compatibility and general health prospects for the couple.
2. Gana Kuta (6 units) -- Temperament
This is one of the most important Kutas, as it measures fundamental temperamental compatibility. The 27 constellations are classified into three Ganas :
| Gana | Nature | Constellations |
|---|---|---|
| Deva (Divine) | Piety, goodness, charitable nature | Punarvasu, Pushyami, Swati, Hasta, Sravana, Revati, Anuradha, Mrigasira, Aswini |
| Manusha (Human) | Mixture of good and bad | Rohini, Pubba, Poorvashadha, Poorvabhadra, Bharani, Aridra, Uttara, Uttarashadha, Uttarabhadra |
| Rakshasa (Forceful) | Dominance, self-will, intensity | Krittika, Aslesha, Makha, Chitta, Visakha, Jyeshta, Moola, Dhanishta, Satabhisha |
The matching rules: Deva can marry Deva; Manusha can marry Manusha; Rakshasa can marry Rakshasa. A Rakshasa man may marry a Deva or Manusha girl (passable), but a Deva or Manusha man should not marry a Rakshasa girl unless other neutralising factors exist. If the asterism of the bride is beyond the 14th from that of the bridegroom, the evil may be ignored.
"A distaste for piety and religious disposition cannot be easily associated with piety and religious nature. A difference in beliefs and dogmas cannot always be overbalanced by sexual compatibility."
3. Mahendra (positional check)
The constellation of the boy counted from that of the girl should be the 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th, 16th, 19th, 22nd, or 25th. This promotes well-being and increases longevity. It does not carry numerical units but its presence is auspicious.
4. Stree-Deergha (positional check)
The boy's constellation should preferably be beyond the 9th from that of the girl (some say beyond the 7th). This factor can be ignored if Rasi Kuta and Graha Maitri are both present.
5. Yoni Kuta (4 units) -- Sexual Compatibility
Yoni means sex, and this Kuta addresses the biological and instinctual dimension of compatibility. Raman notes that the human embryo passes through various stages of evolution, and the birth constellation indicates which animal tendencies predominate. Each of the 27 constellations is assigned an animal and a sex (male or female):
| # | Male Star | Female Star | Animal (Yoni) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aswini | Satabhisha | Horse |
| 2 | Bharani | Revati | Elephant |
| 3 | Pushya | Krittika | Sheep |
| 4 | Rohini | Mrigasira | Serpent |
| 5 | Moola | Aridra | Dog |
| 6 | Aslesha | Punarvasu | Cat |
| 7 | Makha | Pubba | Rat |
| 8 | Uttara | Uttarabhadra | Cow |
| 9 | Swati | Hasta | Buffalo |
| 10 | Visakha | Chitta | Tiger |
| 11 | Jyeshta | Anuradha | Hare |
| 12 | Poorvashadha | Sravana | Monkey |
| 13 | Poorvabhadra | Dhanishta | Lion |
| 14 | Uttarashadha | -- | Mongoose |
The best results come from mating a male constellation with its corresponding female constellation of the same animal class. If both belong to male constellations, there will be constant quarrels. The following hostile pairs must be avoided: Cow and Tiger; Elephant and Lion; Horse and Buffalo; Dog and Hare; Serpent and Mongoose; Monkey and Goat; Cat and Rat.
Raman also provides a detailed cross-reference table showing the exact units of agreement for every possible Yoni combination, ranging from 0 (completely hostile) to 4 (perfect match).
6. Rasi Kuta (7 units)
The relative position of the Rasis (Moon signs) of the boy and girl determines various outcomes:
| Position | Result (Boy from Girl) | Result (Girl from Boy) |
|---|---|---|
| 2nd / 12th | Evil results | Longevity for the couple |
| 3rd | Misery and sorrow | Happiness |
| 4th | Great poverty | Great wealth |
| 5th | Unhappiness | Enjoyment and prosperity |
| 6th | Loss of children | Progeny will prosper |
| 7th (mutual) | Health, agreement, and happiness | |
Exception: When both Rasis are owned by the same planet, or when the lords of the two Rasis are friends, the evil attributed to inauspicious Rasi dispositions gets cancelled entirely.
7. Rasyadhipathi / Graha Maitri (5 units) -- The Most Important Kuta
Raman calls this "the most important Kuta inasmuch as it deals with the psychological dispositions of the couple." It examines whether the lords of the Janma Rasis (Moon signs) of the bride and bridegroom are friends, neutrals, or enemies.
| Planet | Friends | Neutrals | Enemies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Moon, Mars, Jupiter | Mercury | Saturn, Venus |
| Moon | Sun, Mercury | Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn | -- |
| Mars | Sun, Moon, Jupiter | Venus, Saturn | Mercury |
| Mercury | Sun, Venus | Mars, Jupiter, Saturn | Moon |
| Jupiter | Sun, Moon, Mars | Saturn | Mercury, Venus |
| Venus | Mercury, Saturn | Mars, Jupiter | Sun, Moon |
| Saturn | Mercury, Venus | Jupiter | Sun, Moon, Mars |
When both lords are friends: full Kuta. One friend and one neutral: passable. Both neutral: ordinary. Both enemies: Kuta absent. Exception: Even without lord-level friendship, Graha Maitri may be granted if friendship exists between the planets owning the Navamsas occupied by the Moon.
"One will have to be very careful in the assessment of these factors and on superficial grounds no horoscope should be rejected as unsuitable or unfortunate."
8. Vasya Kuta (2 units)
This measures the degree of magnetic control or amenability one partner exercises over the other. Vasya literally means "amenable" or "subject to control." In a marriage, some degree of mutual influence is healthy -- when one partner can gently guide the other, it prevents the relationship from drifting into indifference. However, if neither partner is amenable to the other, stubbornness and ego clashes may dominate.
| Rasi (Sign) | Signs Amenable (Vasya) to It |
|---|---|
| Aries | Leo, Scorpio |
| Taurus | Cancer, Libra |
| Gemini | Virgo |
| Cancer | Scorpio, Sagittarius |
| Leo | Libra |
| Virgo | Pisces, Gemini |
| Libra | Capricorn, Virgo |
| Scorpio | Cancer |
| Sagittarius | Pisces |
| Capricorn | Aries, Aquarius |
| Aquarius | Aries |
| Pisces | Capricorn |
If the bride's Rasi is Vasya to the groom's Rasi (or vice versa), 2 units are awarded. If neither is amenable to the other, the Kuta is absent. In Raman's worked example (Taurus and Aquarius), neither sign is subject to the control of the other, so no units are scored. Note that mutual Vasya (where each sign is amenable to the other) is the ideal but rare configuration.
9. Rajju Kuta -- Duration of Marriage (critical check)
Rajju indicates the strength and duration of married life and deserves special attention. The 27 constellations are grouped into five types:
| Rajju | Body Part | Constellations | If Both Fall Here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siro (Head) | Head | Dhanishta, Chitta, Mrigasira | Husband's death likely |
| Kantha (Neck) | Neck | Rohini, Aridra, Hasta, Swati, Sravana, Satabhisha | Wife may die |
| Nabhi/Udara (Stomach) | Stomach | Krittika, Punarvasu, Uttara, Visakha, Uttarashadha, Poorvabhadra | Children may die |
| Kati (Waist) | Waist | Bharani, Pushyami, Pubba, Anuradha, Poorvashadha, Uttarabhadra | Poverty may ensue |
| Pada (Foot) | Foot | Aswini, Aslesha, Makha, Jyeshta, Moola, Revati | Constant wandering |
The couple's Janma Nakshatras must not fall in the same Rajju group. This is a disqualifying factor.
10. Vedha -- Affliction (must be absent)
Certain pairs of constellations afflict each other. The following pairs must be avoided: Aswini-Jyeshta; Bharani-Anuradha; Krittika-Visakha; Rohini-Swati; Aridra-Sravana; Punarvasu-Uttarashadha; Pushyami-Poorvashadha; Aslesha-Moola; Makha-Revati; Pubba-Uttarabhadra; Uttara-Poorvabhadra; Hasta-Satabhisha; and Mrigasira-Dhanishta.
11. Varna Kuta (1 unit)
This signifies the degree of spiritual development. Pisces, Scorpio, and Cancer represent the highest (Brahmin); Leo, Sagittarius, and Libra the second (Kshatriya); Aries, Gemini, and Aquarius the third (Vaisya); and Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn the fourth (Sudra). A girl of higher Varna should not be mated to a boy of lower Varna.
12. Nadi Kuta (8 units) -- The Most Significant
Raman considers this simultaneously the most important and most significant Kuta. Nadi here refers to the physiological constitution -- the three humours of Ayurveda: Vata (wind), Pitta (bile), and Sleshma (phlegm). A boy of predominantly windy constitution should not marry a girl of the same type. They should belong to different Nadis.
| Vata (Wind) | Pitta (Bile) | Sleshma (Phlegm) |
|---|---|---|
| Aswini | Bharani | Krittika |
| Aridra | Mrigasira | Rohini |
| Punarvasu | Pushyami | Aslesha |
| Uttara | Pubba | Makha |
| Hasta | Chitta | Swati |
| Jyeshta | Anuradha | Visakha |
| Moola | Poorvashadha | Uttarashadha |
| Satabhisha | Dhanishta | Sravana |
| Poorvabhadra | Uttarabhadra | Revati |
Both constellations should not fall in the same row. If Nadi Kuta is absent based on Nakshatras, it can be recalculated using Nakshatra Padas (quarters), following a forward-backward counting pattern in groups of three. With 8 units at stake, this is the single highest-scoring Kuta and its absence is a serious concern.
Exceptions and Special Considerations
Raman provides a nuanced set of exceptions that prevent over-rigid application of the rules. This section is essential for practitioners, because blind rule-following without understanding the exceptions leads to needlessly rejected matches.
- The absence of Stree-Deergha may be ignored if Rasi Kuta and Graha Maitri are both present.
- The evil of a Rakshasa Gana bride may be ignored if the Janma Rasis are disposed 2nd/12th, 9th/5th, or 6th/8th from each other and the Rasi lords are the same or mutual friends.
- Graha Maitri need not be considered if the couple's Janma Rasis are disposed 1st and 7th from each other.
- Rajju Kuta need not be considered if Graha Maitri, Rasi, Dina, and Mahendra Kutas are all present.
- Nadi Kuta evil can be ignored if: (a) Rasi and Rajju Kutas prevail; (b) the same planet lords both Janma Rasis; or (c) the Janma Rasi lords are friends.
Common Janma Rasi and Common Janma Nakshatra
When bride and groom share the same Janma Rasi, the ancient sages offer varied opinions. Narada says it is acceptable provided they are born in different constellations. Garga requires the boy's constellation to precede the girl's. If the girl's constellation precedes the boy's ( Stree-purva ), the alliance should be rejected.
When they share the same Janma Nakshatra: Rohini, Aridra, Makha, Hasta, Visakha, Sravana, Uttarabhadra, and Revati are approved. Several others are ordinary. Bharani, Aslesha, Swati, Jyeshta, Moola, Dhanishta, Satabhisha, and Poorvabhadra as common Janma Nakshatras are not recommended. Even here, if the Padas are different, the evil is often nullified.
Destructive Constellations: Separating Fact from Fear
There is a widespread belief that girls born in certain constellations cause the death of specific relatives. Raman directly confronts this superstition by clarifying that only certain Padas (quarters) are inauspicious, not the entire constellation:
| Constellation | Inauspicious Quarter | Said to Affect | Remaining Quarters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moola | 1st quarter only | Husband's father (father-in-law) | Quarters 2, 3, 4 are beneficial |
| Aslesha | 1st quarter only | Husband's mother (mother-in-law) | Quarters 2, 3, 4 are beneficial |
| Jyeshta | 1st quarter only | Husband's elder brother | Quarters 2, 3, 4 are beneficial |
| Visakha | Last (4th) quarter only | Husband's younger brother | Quarters 1, 2, 3 are beneficial |
"This is entirely due to ignorance of the real astrological factors governing such considerations. Only certain Padas or quarters should be held inauspicious and not the entire constellation."
Raman is emphatic: rejecting a girl born in Visakha outright, when only the 4th quarter is problematic, is ignorance masquerading as caution. A girl born in the first three quarters of Visakha should absolutely not be considered destructive. The same principle applies to Moola, Aslesha, and Jyeshta.
Kuja Dosha (Mars Affliction): The Most Misunderstood Factor
No topic in Indian marriage astrology generates more anxiety -- and more misinformation -- than Kuja Dosha . Raman is remarkably forthright about the damage caused by its overemphasis:
"It is unfortunate that throughout South India especially in the Tamil areas, much is made of the so-called Kuja Dosham and this bugbear has been the means of destroying the happiness of many families by preventing marriages otherwise very eligible and anxiously wished for."
What Kuja Dosha Actually Is
Mars, whose element is fire, rules marriage. When Mars is badly situated in the 2nd, 12th, 4th, 7th, or 8th houses from Lagna, Moon, or Venus, it creates Kuja Dosha. The dosha is considered weakest from Lagna, stronger from Moon, and strongest from Venus.
The rationale for these houses: the 2nd signifies family; the 12th represents bed pleasures; the 4th rules happiness; the 7th indicates the spouse; and the 8th represents the longevity of the partner.
The Antidotes Most Astrologers Ignore
Raman provides a detailed set of exceptions that dramatically narrow the actual incidence of Kuja Dosha:
| Mars in House | Dosha Cancelled if House Falls in |
|---|---|
| 2nd house | Gemini or Virgo |
| 12th house | Taurus or Libra |
| 4th house | Aries or Scorpio |
| 7th house | Capricorn or Cancer |
| 8th house | Sagittarius or Pisces |
| Any house | Aquarius or Leo (no dosha whatsoever) |
Additionally, the dosha is counteracted by:
- Conjunction of Mars with Jupiter
- Conjunction of Mars with the Moon
- Presence of Jupiter or Venus in the ascendant
- If Kuja Dosha exists in both horoscopes, the doshas cancel each other
"Thus, it will be seen that Kuja Dosha does not deserve that consideration which is now being paid to it. In the consideration of marriage adaptability there are various other factors which should be carefully examined."
The takeaway is clear: Kuja Dosha is one factor among many, and it has numerous well-established exceptions. An astrologer who rejects a match solely on the basis of Kuja Dosha, without checking the sign-based exceptions and counteracting influences, is practicing incomplete astrology.
Electing a Time for Marriage
After compatibility has been established, the final step is selecting an auspicious moment for the wedding ceremony itself. Raman provides comprehensive guidelines covering lunar months, lunar days, weekdays, constellations, yogas, and zodiacal signs.
Auspicious Months
| Rating | Lunar Months |
|---|---|
| Best | Magha, Phalguna, Vaisakha, Jyeshta |
| Ordinary | Kartika, Margasira |
| Conditional | Pushya (if Sun is in Capricorn), Chaitra (if Sun is in Aries) |
| Avoid | All others |
Auspicious Lunar Days, Weekdays, and Stars
- Best lunar days: 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 13th of the bright half
- Avoid: 11th day (dark half) to New Moon, Riktha Tithis (4th, 9th, 14th), 8th, 12th, 6th
- Best weekdays: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
- Middling: Sunday, Saturday
- Always reject: Tuesday
- Best constellations: Rohini, Mrigasira, Makha, Uttara, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Moola, Uttarashadha, Uttarabhadra, Revati (but avoid the 1st quarter of Makha/Moola and last quarter of Revati)
- Best zodiacal signs for Lagna: Gemini, Virgo, Libra (best); Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius, Aquarius (middling)
Six Essential Conditions for the Election Chart
Raman identifies these as the most important conditions:
- The 7th house must be unoccupied by any planet
- Mars should not be in the 8th house
- Venus should not be in the 6th house
- The Lagna should not be hemmed in between malefics
- Malefics should not occupy Lagna
- The Moon should have no association with any other planet
Special Fortifying Yogas
Raman lists nine special combinations that fortify the marriage election chart. Jupiter, Mercury, or Venus in Lagna combined with malefics in the 3rd or 11th creates a formidable protective force. Among the named yogas:
- Mahendra Yoga: Jupiter in ascendant, Venus in 8th, Sun in 11th
- Vishnu Priya Yoga: Venus in Lagna, Jupiter in 10th, Sun and Mercury in 11th
- Sreenatha Yoga: Venus in 2nd, Jupiter in 12th, Sun in 8th, Saturn in 6th
- Vijaya Yoga: Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus all in Lagna
- Jaya Yoga: Venus and Jupiter in Lagna, elevated or otherwise strong
- Samudra Yoga: Venus in Lagna, Jupiter in the 4th, Mercury in the 2nd, Saturn in the 11th
- Pushya Yoga: Saturn in the 3rd, Jupiter in the 6th, Sun in the 10th, Mars in the 11th
- Maharshi Yoga: Mars in the 3rd, Saturn in the 6th, Venus in the 9th, Jupiter in the 12th
- Ardhama Yoga: Venus in Lagna, Jupiter in the 11th
Raman notes that securing even one of these yogas in the election chart adds a formidable protective force to the marriage. In practice, Ardhama Yoga (Venus in Lagna, Jupiter in the 11th) is the easiest to find, while Vijaya Yoga (three benefics together in Lagna) is the rarest and most powerful.
Yogas and Karana to Reject
Certain yogas must be avoided in the marriage election chart. The following are specifically named as inauspicious:
- Vyatipata, Dhruva, Mrityu, Ganda, Vajra, Soola -- these yogas carry inherently destructive energies
- Vishkambha, Atiganda, Vyaghata, Parigha -- associated with obstruction and conflict
- Vishti Karana -- must invariably be discarded for any marriage election
"Thus, it will be seen that the Hindus have devised an astrological means of judging marriage compatibility whereby the relations between the couple may stand the strain of maladjustment."
Key Takeaways
- Check longevity and house strength first. Never begin Kuta matching without first verifying that both horoscopes indicate good longevity and that the 7th and 8th houses are reasonably strong.
- Graha Maitri (Rasyadhipathi) is the single most important Kuta , because it governs psychological compatibility and genuine affection between partners.
- Nadi Kuta carries the most points (8 of 36) and addresses physiological compatibility. Its absence is serious but can be mitigated if Rasi and Rajju Kutas are present.
- Kuja Dosha is vastly overemphasised. It has numerous sign-based exceptions and can be neutralised by Jupiter's or Moon's conjunction, or by both charts having the dosha. Do not reject an otherwise excellent match solely because of Mars placement.
- Destructive constellations affect only specific quarters, not the full Nakshatra. A girl born in the first three quarters of Visakha or the last three quarters of Moola is not destructive at all.
- Exceptions are built into the system. The Kutas are not rigid pass/fail gates. Multiple exceptions allow the absence of one Kuta to be compensated by the presence of others.
- The wedding Muhurtha can mitigate residual afflictions. Even after compatibility is confirmed, choosing the right moment adds an additional layer of protection through favourable planetary positions.
- Venus-Mars dynamics matter independently of the Kutas. Physical and emotional compatibility should be assessed through the disposition of these planets in both charts, paying attention to the constellations they occupy.
