Mastering Ashtakavarga Part 16: Longevity Calculation — Method A (Bhinnashtakavarga)

Mastering Ashtakavarga — A Complete Guide

A comprehensive exploration of B.V. Raman's Ashtakavarga System of Prediction, bringing ancient mathematical astrology into modern practice with clarity and precision.

Part 16 of 20 • Longevity Determination • Topics: Ayurdaya, Rasi Gunakara, Graha Gunakara, Sodya Pinda, Haranas

We now reach one of the most profound applications of Ashtakavarga — the determination of longevity (Ayurdaya). Classical astrology mentions 32 different methods for calculating lifespan, including Ashtakavargayu, Jeevasarmayu, Pindayu, Naisargikayu, and Amsayu. B.V. Raman presents two practical methods in this chapter — Method A (based on Bhinnashtakavarga) and Method B (based on Sarvashtakavarga). This article focuses on Method A.

The method involves calculating Rasi Pinda (zodiacal product), Graha Pinda (planetary product), combining them into Sodya Pinda, applying Haranas (reductions), and converting from lunar to solar years. While mathematically elegant, Raman himself cautions that these methods should not be relied upon as foolproof — actual longevity often varies significantly from calculated values.

"In our humble view, mathematical methods of longevity determination cannot be relied upon safely. While Amsayu has yielded correct results in a number of cases, longevity determined according to Ashtakavarga has not been found satisfactory in many cases."

B.V. Raman, Ashtakavarga System of Prediction

Ethical Note: Longevity predictions should be approached with extreme caution. These methods are presented for educational purposes and to understand classical techniques. Always use judgment, compassion, and ethical restraint when discussing lifespan with clients.

Rasi Gunakara (Zodiacal Factors)

Each of the 12 zodiac signs has been assigned a constant numerical factor called Rasi Gunakara (zodiacal multiplier). These values are universal constants, identical for all horoscopes.

Sign (Rasi)Zodiacal FactorSign (Rasi)Zodiacal Factor
Aries7Libra7
Taurus10Scorpio8
Gemini8Sagittarius9
Cancer4Capricorn5
Leo10Aquarius11
Virgo5Pisces12
Calculation Process
  1. Take the after-reduction bindus (benefic points) from each planet's Bhinnashtakavarga (after both Trikona and Ekadhipatya reductions)
  2. Multiply the bindus in each sign by that sign's Rasi Gunakara
  3. Sum all 12 products to get the Rasi Pinda (zodiacal product) for that planet
Worked Example: Sun's Rasi Pinda in Standard Horoscope

Graha Gunakara (Planetary Factors)

Just as each sign has a multiplier, each planet also has a constant numerical factor called Graha Gunakara (planetary multiplier). These values are also universal constants.

Calculation Process
  1. For each of the 7 planets in the horoscope, note which sign they occupy
  2. From the planet's own Bhinnashtakavarga (after reductions), find the bindus in that sign
  3. Multiply those bindus by the planet's Graha Gunakara
  4. Do this for all 7 planets, then sum the 7 products to get the Graha Pinda (planetary product) for that planet's Ashtakavarga
Worked Example: Sun's Graha Pinda in Standard Horoscope

In the Standard Horoscope: Sun in Virgo, Moon in Aquarius, Mars in Scorpio, Mercury in Libra, Jupiter in Gemini, Venus in Virgo, Saturn in Leo.

Sodya Pinda and Gross Longevity

The Sodya Pinda is the sum of Rasi Pinda and Graha Pinda for each planet. This combined figure represents the planet's total longevity contribution before applying reductions.

Formula for Gross Longevity

Gross Longevity (years) = (Sodya Pinda × 7) ÷ 27

If the result exceeds 27 years, subtract 27 to bring it within range.

Worked Example: Sun's Gross Longevity

Rasi Pinda (Sun): 96

Graha Pinda (Sun): 86

Sodya Pinda (Sun): 96 + 86 = 182

Gross Longevity = (182 × 7) ÷ 27 = 1274 ÷ 27 = 47.20 years

Since 47.20 > 27, we subtract 27: 47.20 - 27 = 20.20 years

Gross Longevity for All Planets (Standard Horoscope)
PlanetRasi Pinda+Graha Pinda=Sodya Pinda×7÷27Gross Years
Sun96+86=18220.20
Moon80+20=10026.00
Mars126+71=19724.00
Mercury97+61=15814.00
Jupiter79+45=1245.00
Venus66+0=6615.80
Saturn170+42=21212.00
Total Gross Longevity117.00 years

This 117 years is the gross longevity before applying any reductions (Haranas).

Haranas (Reductions)

The gross longevity must be reduced based on various planetary afflictions. These reductions are called Haranas. There are six types of reductions:

(a) Conjunction

If more than one planet occupies the same sign, reduce that planet's term by half (1/2).

(b) Debilitation/Combustion

If a planet is debilitated or combust, reduce by half (1/2).

(c) Enemy Sign

If a planet is in the sign of an enemy, reduce by one-third (1/3).

(d) Malefic in Visible Half

If a malefic planet is in the visible half (houses 7-12), apply graduated reductions:
12th house = full term
11th house = 1/2
10th house = 1/3
9th house = 1/4
8th house = 1/5
7th house = 1/6
Benefics lose half of what malefics do.

(e) Planetary War

If a planet suffers defeat in Graha Yuddha (planetary war), reduce by one-third (1/3).

(f) Eclipse

If the Sun or Moon is of unusual appearance (as in eclipse), reduce by one-third (1/3).

Important Rule: When the same planet is subject to multiple reductions, apply only the highest reduction (not cumulative).

Applying Haranas to Standard Horoscope

In the Standard Horoscope:

  • Sun: Subject to (a) — in conjunction with Venus in Virgo → reduce by 1/2
  • Moon: No afflictions → no reduction
  • Mars: Subject to (d) — malefic in 12th house (visible half) → reduce by 1/2
  • Mercury: Subject to (d) — benefic in 11th house (visible half) → reduce by 1/6
  • Jupiter: No afflictions → no reduction
  • Venus: Subject to (a) conjunction, (b) combustion, (d) benefic in visible half → highest is 1/2
  • Saturn: Subject to (c) — in enemy sign Leo → reduce by 1/3

Jupiter5.005.00
Venus15.80(a), (b), (d)1/27.90
Saturn12.00(c)1/38.00
Total Net Longevity (Chandramana)80.67 years

Lunar to Solar Conversion

The final step is converting from Chandramana (lunar measure) to Sauramana (solar measure), as our calendar years are solar.

Solar Longevity = (Lunar Longevity × 324) ÷ 365

This conversion factor accounts for the difference between the lunar and solar year cycles.

Final Calculation for Standard Horoscope

Net Longevity (Chandramana): 80.67 years

Solar Conversion: (80.67 × 324) ÷ 365 = 26,137.08 ÷ 365

Final Longevity (Sauramana): 71.6 years

Raman's Honest Assessment

B.V. Raman, unlike many classical authors, provides an honest and cautionary note about the reliability of Ashtakavarga-based longevity methods. This intellectual honesty is one of the hallmarks of his scholarship.

"In our humble view, mathematical methods of longevity determination cannot be relied upon safely. While Amsayu has yielded correct results in a number of cases, longevity determined according to Ashtakavarga has not been found satisfactory in many cases."

B.V. Raman, Ashtakavarga System of Prediction, Chapter XIV

Raman notes that ancient authorities themselves were not agreed on which of the 32 methods were foolproof and universally applicable. While he presents the methods in detail (for completeness and education), he explicitly states that actual longevity often varies significantly from calculated values.

Modern Perspective: These methods should be studied for historical understanding and as part of learning classical techniques. They should not be used as definitive predictive tools for lifespan. Always exercise extreme caution, ethical judgment, and compassion when discussing longevity with clients.
