Mastering Ashtakavarga Part 14: Timing Events with Ashtakavarga — The Dasa Connection

Mastering Ashtakavarga — Timing with Precision

A comprehensive guide to the Ashtakavarga System of Prediction, merging classical wisdom with modern application. Learn to time life events with unprecedented accuracy.

Part 14 of 20 • Chapter XII • Topics: Dasa Timing, Prasthara Divisions, Sub-period Analysis, Ultimate Precision

While Prastharashtakavarga gives us a static map of planetary strength, its true power emerges when we combine it with Dasa periods to pinpoint when events will unfold. The timing of an event can be narrowed down to intervals as brief as 2-3 months using advanced techniques. This chapter explores how bindu strength interacts with Vimshottari Dasa to reveal the precise timing of life's major turning points.

"Prastharashtakavarga can be put to two important uses, viz., for the delineation of Dasa results and for predicting Gochara or Transit effects. The timing of an event could be narrowed down to as brief an interval as possible."

Ashtakavarga System of Prediction, Chapter XII

Note: When we say "Dasa" in this chapter, we refer to the Vimshottari system (widely used), not the Ashtakavarga Dasa system (less reliable). Sub-periods may refer to Vimshottari Bhukti or symbolic divisions of a Dasa period (8-part or 12-part).

Assessing Major Periods (Dasa)

To judge a planet's Dasa, follow this 3-step process combining traditional and Ashtakavarga methods:

1

Traditional Analysis

Examine the Dasa lord's karakatwa (natural significations), ownership (which houses), location (which house it occupies), associations, and aspects.

2

Bindu Strength

Check the number of bindus in the sign occupied by the Dasa lord in its own Ashtakavarga. Large bindu count = favorable results.

3

Kakshya Analysis

Identify the Kakshya (sub-division ruler) where the Dasa lord sits. If that ruler contributed a bindu to the sign, the lord's power to deliver results is strengthened.

Key Principle: Bindu strength is capable of neutralizing blemishes like occupation of dusthanas (6th, 8th, 12th) or debilitation. Conversely, deficiency of bindus can diminish even Raja Yogas and other favorable combinations.

If both signs owned by a planet have bindus, the planet's vitality is enhanced (doesn't apply to Sun/Moon).

Assessing Sub-Periods (Bhukti)

Sub-periods (within a Dasa) reveal finer timing. Check the sub-lord's bindu count in the Dasa lord's Ashtakavarga:

Sub-lord with Low Bindus

A sub-lord with less than optimum bindus (in Dasa lord's Ashtakavarga) produces inauspicious results related to:

  • Houses owned by the sub-lord
  • House occupied by the sub-lord
  • House whose lord did NOT contribute a bindu to the sub-lord's sign
Sub-lord with High Bindus

A sub-lord with 4+ bindus (in Dasa lord's Ashtakavarga) brings favorable results like reputation, financial success, health, political power, relating to:

  • Houses owned by the sub-lord
  • Houses occupied by the sub-lord
  • House whose lord contributed a bindu to the sub-lord's sign

Kakshya Contribution: If the lord of the Kakshya (where Dasa lord sits) has contributed a bindu, the Dasa lord's discretion to deliver results is strengthened; otherwise there is obstruction. Always interpret directional influences in light of transit indications.

8-Part Division of a Dasa (Prasthara Method)

A powerful technique divides any Dasa period into 8 equal parts following the Prasthara order (based on planetary orbits from Earth):

Prasthara Order:
1. Saturn2. Jupiter3. Mars4. Sun5. Venus6. Mercury7. Moon8. Lagna

Each sub-period = 1/8th of the Dasa duration. Regardless of which planet's Dasa you're analyzing, the sub-divisions always follow this fixed order.

Context: Jupiter as lord of 3rd and 12th (from Lagna) is blemished, but as lord of 2nd and 11th from Chandra Lagna, fairly favorable. Occupies 6th from Lagna, 5th from Moon. In his own Ashtakavarga, Jupiter has 7 bindus — extremely auspicious. Jupiter sits at 23°35' Gemini, in Moon's Kakshya, and Moon contributed a bindu (minimizes afflictions).

30 Jul 1930 - 30 Jul 1932 (2 years)
I. Saturn Sub-period 4 bindus
Saturn did NOT contribute bindu to Jupiter's sign, suggesting adverse start. But Saturn's 2 Rasis have 5 and 4 bindus respectively, neutralizing evil. Saturn rules Lagna and sits in 8th from Lagna, 7th from Moon. Result: Native married as soon as Jupiter's Dasa commenced.
30 Jul 1932 - 30 Jul 1934 (2 years)
II. Jupiter Sub-period 7 bindus
Highly favorable. Events related to 3rd (siblings), 12th (losses), 5th (children), 11th (gains), 6th (disease/enemies).
30 Jul 1934 - 30 Jul 1936 (2 years)
III. Mars Sub-period
Mars contributed bindu — favorable for properties, lands.
30 Jul 1936 - 30 Jul 1938 (2 years)
IV. Sun Sub-period
Sun contributed bindu — reputation, father's welfare.
30 Jul 1938 - 30 Jul 1940 (2 years)
V. Venus Sub-period
Venus contributed bindu — comforts, luxuries.
30 Jul 1940 - 30 Jul 1942 (2 years)
VI. Mercury Sub-period
Mercury contributed bindu — intelligence, communications.
30 Jul 1942 - 30 Jul 1944 (2 years)
VII. Moon Sub-period
Moon contributed bindu — mental peace, mother's welfare.
30 Jul 1944 - 30 Jul 1946 (2 years)
VIII. Lagna Sub-period
Lagna contributed bindu — health, body improvements.

Overall Assessment: During Jupiter's Dasa, the native married, had children, entered family life, and improved financially. There were difficulties and anxieties (12th house indications), but Jupiter's inherent auspiciousness (7 bindus) enabled the native to overcome all obstacles.

12-Part Division (Bhava Method)

An alternative technique divides the Dasa period into 12 equal parts, each covering one bhava (house) starting from the Rasi occupied by the Dasa lord:

  • First 1/12th: Results pertain to the bhava where Dasa lord sits
  • Second 1/12th: Results pertain to the next bhava (2nd from Dasa lord's Rasi)
  • ... continuing through all 12 houses

The nature of results depends on whether the Rasi covered by each sub-period has minimum, optimum, or maximum bindus in the Dasa lord's Ashtakavarga.

Context: Saturn's Dasa = 19 years. Each sub-period = 19 months. Saturn occupies Leo (8th house from Lagna).

Sub-period 1 (19 months)
Leo (8th house) 3 bindus (less than optimum)
Result: Period of worry, sickness, disappointments. 8th house suffering manifested.
Sub-period 3 (19 months)
Libra (10th house) 5 bindus (more than optimum)
Result: Honors for native's husband, acquisition of house, birth of daughter. Generally favorable period. Planets contributing bindus (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Lagna) produced results according to their karakatwa (Mars = lands/houses, Jupiter = children, Sun = reputation, Moon = mental peace).

Research Finding: In a large number of cases, the general trend of results pertains to the bhava covered by the sub-period, while planets contributing bindus produce results mainly of their karakatwa (natural significations) and to some extent of the bhavas they own, occupy, or aspect.

Ultimate Precision: 8 Sub-Divisions of Sub-Periods

For maximum timing accuracy, divide each sub-period (from the 12-part method) into 8 intervals using Prasthara order. This creates windows as narrow as 2-3 months:

Setup:
• Dasa: Saturn
• Sub-period: Libra (3rd sub-period, 10th house)
• Duration: 30 Sep 1949 to 30 Apr 1951 (19 months)
• Bindus in Libra: 5 (contributed by Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Lagna)
• Each interval: ~2 months 11½ days

IntervalPlanetDatesBindu?Result
ISaturn30 Sep 1949 - 11 Dec 1949YesNothing adverse (Saturn placed in 8th, rules Lagna, but contributed bindu)
IIJupiter11 Dec 1949 - 22 Feb 1950YesAcquisition of house, birth of child (Jupiter lord of 2nd/11th, occupies 5th from Chandra, aspected by Mars)
IIIMars22 Feb 1950 - 3 May 1950YesFavorable for lands/properties (Mars karakatwa)
IVSun3 May 1950 - 15 Jul 1950YesReputation gains (Sun karakatwa)
VVenus15 Jul 1950 - 26 Sep 1950NoOrdinary or neutral results
VIMercury26 Sep 1950 - 7 Dec 1950NoHealth suffered (Mercury did not donate bindu)
VIIMoon7 Dec 1950 - 18 Feb 1951NoOrdinary results
VIIILagna18 Feb 1951 - 30 Apr 1951YesFavorable for health/body

Interpretation Principle: The planet governing an interval that contributed a bindu is capable of giving rise to results of its:

  • Karakatwa (natural significations)
  • Ownership (houses owned)
  • Situation (house occupied)

Intervals of planets who did NOT contribute a bindu produce adverse or ordinary results.

Synthesis: Combining Methods for Accuracy

For maximum predictive power, synthesize multiple layers:

Layer 1: Dasa Assessment
  • Traditional analysis (ownership, location, aspects)
  • Bindu count in Dasa lord's Ashtakavarga
  • Kakshya bindu contribution
Layer 2: Sub-period Assessment
  • Vimshottari Bhukti bindu count
  • OR 8-part Prasthara division
  • OR 12-part Bhava division
Layer 3: Interval Precision
  • 8-part division of sub-periods
  • Check bindu contribution for each interval ruler
  • Identify exact 2-3 month windows
Layer 4: Transit Confirmation
  • Always check Gochara (transits)
  • Dasa gives potential, transits trigger events
  • Chapter XIII covers transit analysis

Critical Reminder: In astrology, where human life events must be predicted, no fast and hard rules can be laid down. Use classical astrological dicta as guide-posts, then design methods capable of timing events with as much accuracy as possible.

Due attention must always be paid to transits. Dasa indications show the potential; transits determine when that potential manifests.

Key Takeaways

  • Bindu strength neutralizes blemishes — even dusthana occupation or debilitation can be overcome by high bindu count
  • Deficiency of bindus weakens Raja Yogas — favorable combinations lose potency without bindu support
  • 3-step Dasa assessment: Traditional analysis → Bindu count → Kakshya contribution
  • Sub-lord with 4+ bindus (in Dasa lord's Ashtakavarga) = favorable results for owned/occupied houses
  • Sub-lord with low bindus = inauspicious results for owned/occupied houses
  • 8-part Prasthara division: Saturn → Jupiter → Mars → Sun → Venus → Mercury → Moon → Lagna (always this order)
  • 12-part Bhava division: Each 1/12th pertains to one bhava starting from Dasa lord's Rasi
  • Ultimate precision: Divide sub-periods into 8 intervals (~2-3 months each) using Prasthara order
  • Karakatwa dominates interval results — planets contributing bindus deliver their natural significations
  • Transit confirmation essential — Dasa shows potential, transits trigger actual events
  • Both signs owned by a planet having bindus enhances vitality (not Sun/Moon)
  • This method offers a vast field for research — experiment and refine with real-life cases
