The final article in this 31-part series. Here we provide the essential reference tables from the book's appendices and a comprehensive glossary of every Sanskrit astrological term used across all 31 articles.

Part 31 of 31 • Reference & Glossary • Covers: Appendices A & B

Appendix A: Ayanamsa Calculation

The Ayanamsa is the angular difference between the fixed (Nirayana) and moving (Sayana) zodiacs. It increases by approximately 50⅓ seconds per year. To convert Western (Sayana) planetary positions to Hindu (Nirayana), subtract the Ayanamsa.

Calculation Method

Step 1: Subtract 397 from the year of birth (A.D.)
Step 2: Multiply the remainder by 50⅓ seconds
Step 3: Convert to degrees, minutes, seconds
Step 4: Subtract from all Sayana positions

Example for 1912 A.D.:
1912 − 397 = 1515
1515 × 50.333″ = 76,255″
76,255″ = 21° 10′ 55″

This is the Ayanamsa for 1912 A.D.

Note: The exact starting point where the two zodiacs coincided is debated — Ayanamsa values range from 19° to 23° depending on the authority. Raman's formula (subtracting 397) gives one standard; other systems (Lahiri, Krishnamurti) use slightly different epochs. The VedAstro API uses the standard Lahiri Ayanamsa by default.

Vimshottari Dasa Durations

The complete 120-year Vimshottari cycle (covered in detail in Part 11):

PlanetYearsRuling Nakshatras
☉ Sun (Ketu)6Krittika, Uttara, Uttarashadha
☽ Moon10Rohini, Hasta, Sravana
♂ Mars7Mrigasira, Chitta, Dhanishta
☊ Rahu18Aridra, Swati, Satabhisha
♃ Jupiter16Punarvasu, Visakha, Poorvabhadra
♄ Saturn19Pushyami, Anuradha, Uttarabhadra
☿ Mercury17Aslesha, Jyeshta, Revati
☋ Ketu7Aswini, Makha, Moola
♀ Venus20Bharani, Pubba, Poorvashadha
Total120

Table II in the book provides the exact Dasa balance based on the Moon's longitude at birth. For each 20-minute arc of the Moon's position, the remaining years, months, and days of the ruling Dasa are tabulated. This allows precise calculation of when each planetary period begins and ends throughout life. The VedAstro API calculates this automatically from any birth time.

Appendix B: Oblique Ascension (Table I)

Table I shows the duration of each sign's rising (in Ghatis and Vighatis) for latitudes 0° to 60° North. This is essential for calculating the Ascendant, the period of unconsciousness before death (Part 23), and unknown birth time rectification (Part 26).

Key principle: Signs of short ascension (Aries, Pisces at high latitudes) rise quickly, while signs of long ascension (Virgo, Libra at high latitudes) take much longer. At the equator (0° latitude), all signs rise in equal duration (~5 ghatis each). The further from the equator, the greater the variation. This is why Ascendant calculation must always account for latitude.

The complete 60-row table is provided in the book's appendix. For modern usage, the VedAstro API handles all Ascendant calculations automatically using the Swiss Ephemeris engine with full latitude correction.
