Hindu Predictive Astrology Part 25: Horary Astrology (Prasna)
Prasna (Horary Astrology) answers specific questions by casting a chart for the moment the question is asked — no birth chart needed. It covers everything from lost property to marriage timing to war outcomes. The predictions "seldom go wrong unless the very foundation is shaky."

Will the stolen property be recovered? Will the sick person survive? Should money be invested in this venture? All these can successfully be answered with Prasna.
Ascertain the exact time at which the question is put. Mark the positions of all planets and the Ascendant for that time. Determine the Dasa/Bhukti balance. Prepare the Navamsa diagram. Construct a complete map of the heavens — exactly as you would for a birth chart. This Ascendant is called the Prasna Lagna.
The 14 Rules of Prasna
The querist succeeds if a benefic sign rises in a favourable navamsa, or if the rising sign is a Sirshodaya Rasi (head-rising sign). If a benefic rising sign is aspected by malefics and its lord similarly placed, success comes after some effort.
If the rising navamsa is 1st, 4th, 7th → minerals. 2nd, 5th, 8th → vegetables. 3rd, 6th, 9th → animals (for odd signs). For even signs, the order is reversed.
Saturn in an odd sign from Prasna Lagna → male child. Saturn in an even sign → female child. Male planets in masculine Shadvargas → male; in feminine → female.
Saturn in the 7th → marriage within 3 months. Moon in 3, 5, 6, 7, or 11 aspected by Jupiter, Sun, and Mercury, with benefics in quadrants/trines → very early marriage.
Sun, Venus, or Mars in 7th → adultery with another's wife. Jupiter in 7th → his own wife. Mercury → a prostitute. Saturn → a very low-caste woman.
Predict safe return if any planet is retrograde between the 8th house and the Ascendant.
Evil planets in 4th, 5th, 6th from Prasna Lagna → enemy retreats. Count from Lagna to the strongest planet → number of months. Double for fixed signs, treble for common signs.
Benefics in 3, 5, 7, 11 → success. Malefics in same → losses. If Lagna is Gemini, Virgo, Libra, or Aquarius with benefics → invariable success.
Benefics in Prasna Lagna, 5th, 8th, 7th with auspicious aspects, and Moon in 3rd, 6th, 10th, or 11th → recovery.
Planets in 6th/7th + Jupiter in quadrant + Mercury/Venus in trine → safe return. Nearest planet to Lagna × 12 = number of days until return. If retrograde → starts return after that many days.
Powerful benefic or Full Moon in 11th aspected by Jupiter/Venus → speedy recovery. Fixed sign/navamsa → stolen by near relative. 1st/2nd/3rd drekkana → verandah, central hall, or backyard of the thief's house.
Determined by the strongest planet in quadrants, or by the Ascendant sign if no planets in quadrants.

If the Prasna Lagna navamsa is past the 5th in its sign, count from the 5th and multiply by 9 → miles. If within 5 navamsas → the article is nearby. Example: 7th navamsa = 3rd from 5th → 3 × 9 = 27 miles.
Nature of article → from the navamsa of the rising sign. Nature of thief → from the drekkana. Age and caste → from the lord of the Ascendant. The characteristics of each drekkana are detailed in Part 30 (Decanates).
Early rain predicted when Saturn and Venus occupy the 7th from the Sun and Moon respectively, AND Saturn and Venus are in the 4th and 8th from the Prasna Lagna.
Worked Example: "Will I Marry?"
Prasna Lagna: Virgo. Lord: Mercury (in Taurus, conjunct Venus in own sign).
7th house lord (marriage): Jupiter (in 20° Cancer — well placed).
Analysis: Lagna lord Mercury is conjunct Venus (who is strong in own sign Taurus). Jupiter (7th lord, karaka of marriage) is well placed in Cancer. Both marriage significators are favourably disposed.
Prediction: Early marriage. The bride will be fair. Introduction through a pious and religious man (since Jupiter, a spiritual planet, is the 7th lord).
