Hindu Predictive Astrology Part 24: The Ashtakavarga System

Hindu Predictive Astrology — Complete Modern Guide

Ashtakavarga means "eight sources of energy" for each planet (including the Ascendant). It is a mathematical framework that assigns numerical bindus (points) to each sign for each planet, enabling precise transit predictions, longevity calculations, and timing of specific life events.

Part 24 of 31 • Advanced Techniques • Covers: Book Chapter XXVI — The Ashtakavarga System

Step 1: Benefic Places (Bhinnashtakavarga)

Each planet receives bindus (benefic points) from each of the 7 planets and the Ascendant when they transit certain houses. These are the eight sources of energy. The total bindus for all 7 planets in any horoscope is always 337.

Step 2: Two Reductions

Trikona (Triangular) Reduction

The four triangular groups are: Aries/Leo/Sagittarius, Taurus/Virgo/Capricorn, Gemini/Libra/Aquarius, Cancer/Scorpio/Pisces.

10. When the three figures are NOT equal, subtract the least from the other two; retain the remainders.
11. No elimination if one of the three signs has zero.
12. If two signs are zero, the third must also be eliminated.
13. If all three are equal, remove all three.

Ekadhipatya (Dual-Ownership) Reduction

Applies to all signs except Cancer and Leo (which have single rulers). The Ekadhipatya signs are the pairs owned by Mars (Aries/Scorpio), Venus (Taurus/Libra), Mercury (Gemini/Virgo), Jupiter (Sagittarius/Pisces), and Saturn (Capricorn/Aquarius).

14. No reduction if both houses are occupied by planets.
15. One occupied, one empty: (a) if occupied has smaller number → make empty equal to occupied; (b) if occupied has larger → eliminate the empty; (c) if equal → remove the empty.
16. Both unoccupied: if equal → eliminate both; if unequal → reduce larger to equal the smaller.
17. No reduction if one house has zero.
18. Cancer and Leo are exempt (not Ekadhipatya Rasis).

Step 3: Sarvashtakavarga (Combined Table)

Add together all the before-reduction (B.R.) bindus for each sign across all 7 planets. The total is always 337. This combined table is used for predicting major life events and timing.

Key Predictive Rules (19–50)

After-Reduction Rules (Individual Planets)

19. No auspicious work when the Sun transits signs with no bindus in his Ashtakavarga.
20. Sun transiting zero-bindu signs → unexpected diseases, misunderstandings, quarrels.
21. Sun: Total A.R. bindus × bindus in 9th from Sun ÷ 27 → constellation (from Aswini) where Saturn's transit causes father's death.
22. Sun: Total × bindus in 8th from Sun ÷ 12 → sign where Sun's transit causes native's death (if Maraka period).
23. Direction rule: Sum bindus in each trine set; greatest total indicates auspicious direction.
24. Moon: Total × bindus in 4th from Moon ÷ 27 → constellation where Saturn's transit causes mother's death.
25. No auspicious work when Moon transits zero-bindu signs.
26. Moon's dik → direction of the bathroom in the native's house.
27. Mars' dik → direction of the kitchen or parlour.
28. Saturn transiting zero-bindu Mars signs → blood diseases; death if Mars is powerful.
29. Saturn transiting zero-bindu Mercury signs → son's death.
30. Mercury's dik → playground direction.
31. Jupiter: Bindus in 5th from Jupiter × 2 = number of sons.
32. Jupiter's dik → treasure box location.
35. Venus transiting highest-bindu signs → happiness, marriage, wealth.
36. Venus' dik → bedroom direction.
37. Saturn transiting zero-bindu signs in own Ashtakavarga → death or losses.
38. Sun and Moon transiting Saturn's lowest-bindu signs → death (if fatal year).

Sarvashtakavarga Rules

41. Sign with >30 bindus → happiness, wealth, prosperity. 25–30 → neutral. <25 → very bad results.
42. Start auspicious events when the rising sign has the most Sarvashtakavarga bindus.
43. Houses with many bindus → prosperous disposition (except 6th/8th/12th).
44. If 11th bindus > 10th > 12th, and 1st > 12th → general prosperity, more gains than losses.
45. Divide zodiac into three parts: Pisces–Gemini (childhood), Cancer–Libra (youth), Scorpio–Aquarius (old age). Greatest total → happiest period of life.
46. Bindus of Saturn + Lagna + Mars signs → year of miseries/diseases.
47. Bindus of Rahu + Mars + Saturn signs → year of injuries/battle/poisoning.
48. Bindus of benefic-occupied signs → year of son's birth / great wealth.
49. Lagna lord bindus × 8th house bindus ÷ 12 → month of native's death (from Aries).
50. Strongest dik → best direction for building houses / travelling.

Ayurdaya: Longevity Calculation

The longevity system uses two sets of multipliers applied to the after-reduction (A.R.) bindus:

Rasi Gunakara (Zodiacal Factors)

♈7 • ♉10 • ♊8 • ♋4 • ♌10 • ♍5 • ♎7 • ♏8 • ♐9 • ♑5 • ♒11 • ♓12

Multiply each sign's A.R. bindus by its factor; sum all 12 products.

Graha Gunakara (Planetary Factors)

☉5 • ☽5 • ♂8 • ☿5 • ♃10 • ♀7 • ♄5

Multiply A.R. bindus in each planet's sign by its factor; sum all 7 products.

Formula: (Rasi total + Graha total) × 7 ÷ 27 = years
If result > 27, subtract multiples of 27.

Example (Sun): Rasi = 112, Graha = 45
(112 + 45) × 7 ÷ 27 = 40.70 years
40.70 − 27 = 13.70 years granted by Sun.

Reductions (Haranas)

52. More than one planet in same sign → halve the term.
53. Planet debilitated → halve.
54. Planet combust (within specific degrees of Sun) → halve. Combustion degrees: Moon 12°, Mars 17°, Mercury 14°, Jupiter 11°, Venus 10°, Saturn 16°.
55. Planet in temporary enemy's house → deduct ⅓.
56. Planet above horizon (houses 7–12) → halve.
57. Planet defeated in Grahayuddha (planetary war) → deduct ⅓.
58. Sun/Moon of unusual appearance (eclipse) → deduct ⅓. When multiple reductions apply, use only the highest.

Final step: Multiply the total years by 334/365 to convert Chandramana (lunar) years to Sowramana (solar) years.

Raman's honest assessment: "In actual practice, the Ashtakavarga system of predicting longevity has not been found to yield satisfactory results." Other systems and especially the Maraka planets and their Dasas are of vital importance and should always be checked alongside.

Key Takeaways

  1. Ashtakavarga quantifies planetary strength through 8 sources of energy — it's the only fully numerical system in Vedic astrology
Each planet gets bindus from 7 planets + Ascendant. Total across all planets = 337 (constant for every horoscope).
  2. Two reductions (Trikona + Ekadhipatya) refine the raw bindus into usable predictive data
Raw bindus are used for Sarvashtakavarga; reduced bindus are used for transit predictions and Ayurdaya.
  3. Sarvashtakavarga rule of 30: signs with >30 bindus = good transits; <25 = bad transits
This is the single most useful Ashtakavarga rule for quick chart assessment.
  4. The prosperity formula: 11th house bindus > 10th > 12th, and 1st > 12th = general happiness
Gains (11th) exceed labour (10th) which exceeds losses (12th). Check this in every chart.
  5. Saturn's transit through zero-bindu signs is consistently dangerous across all planets
    Zero bindus in Sun's Ashtakavarga = father's danger. Moon's = mother's danger. Mars = blood diseases. Mercury = son's death.
  6. Ashtakavarga longevity is calculated but should always be cross-checked with Maraka analysis
Raman himself notes the longevity calculation doesn't always yield satisfactory results in practice.

In Part 25, we explore Horary Astrology (Prasna) — the art of answering specific questions by casting a chart for the moment the question is asked, without needing a birth chart at all.
