Hindu Predictive Astrology Chapter 22: Planets in Different Rasis or Signs - A Modern Guide
A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology textbook by B.V. Raman, first published in 1938.
Chapter 22 of 36 ยท Topics: Results of Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn in all 12 signs (Aries to Pisces)
Why Sign Placement Matters: House vs Rasi
While Chapter 21 covered planets in houses (bhavas), this chapter turns to planets in signs (rasis). The distinction is one of the most fundamental in Jyotish and deserves careful attention. The house tells you the area of life affected -- career, marriage, health, wealth and so on. The sign, by contrast, tells you the quality, style and temperament through which a planet expresses itself. A planet in the 10th house will always influence career, but whether that career is bold and pioneering (Aries) or methodical and detail-oriented (Virgo) depends entirely on the sign.
Think of it this way: the house is the stage on which the planet performs, while the sign is the costume and script it has been given. The same actor (planet) playing the same role (house) will deliver a radically different performance depending on whether the script calls for comedy (Gemini) or drama (Scorpio). This is precisely why two people can both have Jupiter in the 2nd house and yet have very different financial stories -- one may have Jupiter in Cancer (exalted, bringing effortless abundance) while the other has Jupiter in Capricorn (debilitated, requiring great effort for modest gains).
"In the above description of the characteristics of the persons born when the different planets are in different signs, the qualities ascribed hold good only when a particular planet is not either glorified or afflicted. Results must be duly modified or qualified according to the affliction or otherwise of the planets concerned."
This caveat from Raman is critical. The sign-based results described in this chapter represent a baseline -- the default expression of a planet when it is neither strengthened by benefic aspects nor weakened by malefic conjunctions. In real charts, you must always layer these sign-based results with the house placement (Chapter 21), aspects from other planets, conjunctions, and the planet's dignity (exalted, own sign, friendly sign, enemy sign, or debilitated). The final prediction emerges from blending all these factors together.
The Dignity Framework
Before diving into the planet-by-planet results, it helps to understand the dignity system that underlies this entire chapter. Every planet has specific signs where it performs at its best (exaltation and own sign) and at its worst (debilitation). Between these extremes lie friendly signs, neutral signs, and enemy signs. The table below provides a quick reference:
| Planet | Exaltation | Own Sign(s) | Debilitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries (10 deg) | Leo | Libra |
| Moon | Taurus (3 deg) | Cancer | Scorpio |
| Mars | Capricorn (28 deg) | Aries, Scorpio | Cancer |
| Mercury | Virgo (15 deg) | Gemini, Virgo | Pisces |
| Jupiter | Cancer (5 deg) | Sagittarius, Pisces | Capricorn |
| Venus | Pisces (27 deg) | Taurus, Libra | Virgo |
| Saturn | Libra (20 deg) | Capricorn, Aquarius | Aries |
When reading the sign-by-sign results that follow, keep this table close at hand. You will notice that the descriptions for a planet in its exaltation sign are markedly more positive than in its debilitation sign. This is not coincidence -- it reflects the fundamental principle that a planet functions best in an environment that resonates with its core nature.
1. The Sun in the Twelve Signs
The Sun represents the soul (Atma), personal magnetism, authority, father, vitality and the core identity of the individual. Its sign placement colours how a person expresses their willpower, ambition and self-confidence. A strong Sun in a compatible sign produces leaders, administrators and people of independent character; a weak or afflicted Sun can manifest as low self-esteem, troubled relationship with the father, or chronic health issues.
"In Aries -- Active, intelligent, famous, traveller, wealthy, warrior, variable fortune, ambitious, phlegmatic, powerful, marked personality, impulsive, irritable, pioneering, initiative."
Notice how the Sun in Aries -- its sign of exaltation -- produces a remarkable cluster of positive traits: fame, intelligence, wealth and leadership. Compare this with the Sun in Libra (its debilitation), where the description shifts to "tactless, base, drunkard, loose morals." The contrast illustrates the enormous range a single planet can express depending solely on its sign placement.
| Sign | Key Results from Raman | Modern Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Aries (Exalted) | Active, intelligent, famous, traveller, wealthy, warrior, ambitious, powerful, impulsive, pioneering | Natural leaders with entrepreneurial drive; risk-takers who thrive in competitive environments |
| Taurus | Clever, reflective, attracted by perfumes, musician, self-confident, tactful, sociable, prominent nose | Steady earners with refined artistic taste; value material security and sensory pleasures |
| Gemini | Learned, astronomer, scholarly, grammarian, polite, wealthy, critical, shy, reserved, lacking originality | Excellent communicators and teachers; may over-intellectualise at the expense of decisive action |
| Cancer | Somewhat harsh, indolent, wealthy, unhappy, constipation, sickly, independent, expert astrologer | Deep emotional intelligence but prone to mood swings; strong intuition, attachment to home |
| Leo (Own) | Stubborn, fixed views, strong, cruel, independent, organising capacity, humanitarian, generous, famous | Commanding presence; born administrators who attract followers naturally; ego can become excessive |
| Virgo | Linguist, poet, mathematician, scholarly, artistic, good memory, effeminate body, frank, reserved | Analytical minds suited to research, editing, healthcare; can be overly critical of self and others |
| Libra (Debil.) | Manufacture of liquors, popular, tactless, base, drunkard, loose morals, arrogant, frank, submissive | Struggles with asserting identity; may seek validation through relationships; needs to build inner confidence |
| Scorpio | Adventurous, bold, reckless, cruel, stubborn, unprincipled, surgical skill, dexterous, military ability | Intense willpower; drawn to investigation, surgery, research; must guard against vindictiveness |
| Sagittarius | Short-tempered, reliable, rich, obstinate, respected, happy, popular, religious, musician | Optimistic, philosophical outlook; drawn to teaching, law, spirituality; prone to overcommitment |
| Capricorn | Mean-minded, stubborn, miserly, active, meddlesome, humorous, witty, affable, prudent, firm | Disciplined and goal-oriented but emotionally reserved; success comes through sustained effort |
| Aquarius | Poor, unhappy, stubborn, unlucky, medium height, rare faculties, self-esteem | Unconventional thinkers; may feel alienated from mainstream; excel in technology and humanitarian work |
| Pisces | Pearl merchant, peaceful, wealthy, uneventful, religious, prodigal, loved by women | Compassionate and spiritually inclined; creative but may lack practical discipline with finances |
Practical application: When you see the Sun in a client's chart, first note its sign for temperament, then its house for the life area, then check aspects. For example, Sun in Aries in the 7th house means the person brings a bold, pioneering energy (Aries) into partnerships and marriage (7th house). If Saturn aspects this Sun, the boldness is tempered with caution and delay.
2. The Moon in the Twelve Signs
The Moon governs the mind (Manas), emotions, mother, public image and mental peace. In Vedic astrology, the Moon's sign placement is arguably more important than the Sun's, because the entire dasha system (planetary period system) is calculated from the Moon's nakshatra. The Moon sign -- called the Rashi or Janma Rashi -- forms the basis of the popular "moon sign horoscope" used widely across India.
"In Taurus -- Liberal, powerful, happy, ability to command, intelligent, handsome, influential, fond of fair sex, happy in middle life and old age, great strides in life, beautiful gait, large thighs and hips, phlegmatic afflictions, rich patience, respected, love-intrigues, inconsistent, wavering mind, sound judgement, voracious eater and reader, lucky, popular, influenced by women, passionate, indolent."
The Moon in Taurus -- near its point of exaltation -- is considered one of the best placements in all of Jyotish. The earthly stability of Taurus grounds the Moon's inherently changeable nature, producing a person who is emotionally steady, materially fortunate, and possesses genuine warmth. The lengthy, largely positive description Raman provides for this placement reflects this classical assessment.
| Sign | Key Results from Raman | Modern Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Round eyes, impulsive, fond of travel, irritable, war-like, enterprising, ambitious, valiant, fickle-minded | Quick emotional reactions; restless mind that needs physical outlets; courageous but prone to anger |
| Taurus (Exalted) | Liberal, powerful, happy, intelligent, handsome, influential, great strides in life, rich, popular, passionate | Emotionally stable and materially fortunate; love of comfort, food, beauty; deeply loyal in relationships |
| Gemini | Well read, creative, fond of women, learned in scriptures, powerful speaker, clever, witty, fond of music, long life | Intellectually curious mind; processes emotions through conversation and writing; versatile but scattered |
| Cancer (Own) | Wise, powerful, charming, influenced by women, wealthy, kind, sensitive, much immovable property, scientist, prudent | Deeply nurturing and intuitive; strong attachment to home and family; excellent memory; moody |
| Leo | Bold, irritable, large cheeks, inclined to be unhappy, mental anxiety, liberal, generous, proud, ambitious | Dramatic emotional expression; needs recognition and appreciation; generous but ego-sensitive |
| Virgo | Lovely complexion, modest, charming, principled, affluent, sweet speech, honest, virtuous, intelligent, astrologer | Analytical mind with attention to detail; health-conscious; tendency to worry and overthink |
| Libra | Reverence for learned people, tall, thin, sickly, intelligent, principled, wealthy, love for arts, losses through women | Seeks harmony and beauty in all things; diplomatic; indecisive when emotions conflict with logic |
| Scorpio (Debil.) | Broad eyes, wide chest, frank, open-minded, cruel, malicious, unhappy, wealthy, impetuous, obstinate | Intense emotional depth; prone to jealousy and obsession; transformative inner life; powerful intuition |
| Sagittarius | Face broad, skilled in fine arts, deep intellect, good speech, happy marriage, many children, reflective | Optimistic and philosophical outlook; love of travel and higher learning; emotionally generous |
| Capricorn | Attached to wife and children, virtuous, good eyes, clever, active, crafty, sagacious, liberal, unscrupulous | Emotionally reserved but deeply responsible; ambitious; may suppress feelings for duty; melancholic tendency |
| Aquarius | Fair-looking, well-formed, tall, sensual, pure-minded, artistic, intuitional, diplomatic, mystical, healing power | Emotionally detached but humanitarian; unconventional thinking; drawn to social causes and technology |
| Pisces | Perfect build, learned, steady, simple, good reputation, adventurous, many children, spiritually inclined later | Deeply compassionate and empathetic; artistic and imaginative; may struggle with boundaries |
Why the Moon matters so much: In daily life, we operate from the Moon more than the Sun. Your emotional reactions, comfort needs, instinctive habits and relationship patterns all flow primarily from the Moon sign. When Vedic astrologers say someone "is" a particular sign, they almost always mean the Moon sign, not the Western Sun sign. This is why understanding the Moon's sign results is essential for accurate character assessment.
3. Mars in the Twelve Signs
Mars (Kuja or Mangala) represents brothers, physical strength, courage, aggression, property, surgery and military affairs. Its sign placement determines whether a person's energy and drive manifest constructively (as ambition, discipline and protective courage) or destructively (as anger, recklessness and violence). Mars is the commander-in-chief of the planetary cabinet, and like any military leader, its effectiveness depends heavily on the terrain (sign) in which it operates.
"In Aries -- Organising capacity, commanding, rich, social, scars in the body, sensual, dark, mathematician, active, powerful, inspiring, pioneering, able, statesmanly, frank, generous, careful not economical in domestic dealings, vague imaginations, combative tendencies, hard-hearted."
Mars in its own sign Aries is one of the strongest placements in the zodiac. The raw martial energy is perfectly channelled through Aries's cardinal fire nature, producing leaders, entrepreneurs and athletes. However, note that even in this favourable placement, Raman mentions "combative tendencies" and "hard-hearted" -- a reminder that Mars always carries a cutting edge regardless of sign.
| Sign | Key Results from Raman | Modern Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Aries (Own) | Organising capacity, commanding, rich, mathematician, powerful, inspiring, statesmanly, frank, generous, combative | Peak martial energy; born leaders and entrepreneurs; physical vitality; must manage aggression |
| Taurus | Influenced by women, timid, stubborn, sensual, liking for magic and sports, tyrannical, emotional | Mars energy directed toward material acquisition; possessive in relationships; slow to anger but explosive |
| Gemini | Loving family, taste in refinement, scientific, well built, learned, ambitious, fearless, skilled in music | Sharp intellect applied to debate and strategy; restless energy; multiple pursuits simultaneously |
| Cancer (Debil.) | Intelligent, wealthy, wicked, love of agriculture, medical proficiency, fickle-minded, speculative, unkind | Emotional volatility; passive-aggressive tendencies; protective of family to a fault; real estate aptitude |
| Leo | Tendency to occultism, astrology, love for parents, independent thinking, liberal, victorious, generous, author | Bold creative expression; leadership with warmth; drawn to dramatic pursuits; generous but proud |
| Virgo | Explosive, trouble in digestive organs, no marital harmony, revengeful, self-confident, materialistic, scientific | Critical and analytical approach to conflict; perfectionism creates friction; technical and surgical skill |
| Libra | Tall, fair, ambitious, self-confident, self-earned wealth, war-like, deceived by women, kind, foresight | Assertiveness through diplomacy; business acumen; conflict in partnerships; seeks fairness aggressively |
| Scorpio (Own) | Middle stature, clever, diplomatic, tenacious memory, malicious, aggressive, proud, great strides in life | Intensely strategic; research and investigation talent; never forgets a slight; transformative willpower |
| Sagittarius | Gentlemanly, many foes, famous minister, open, frank, few children, conservative, impatient, good citizen | Principled warrior; fights for beliefs and ideals; can be dogmatic; success in law and politics |
| Capricorn (Exalted) | Rich, high political position, many sons, brave, generous, industrious, successful, penetrating, influential | Disciplined ambition at its finest; military or corporate leadership; methodical and unstoppable drive |
| Aquarius | Unhappy, miserable, poor, independent, controversial, combative, well-versed in dialects, morose, meditative | Unconventional approach to conflict; fights for social causes; emotionally detached aggression; isolation |
| Pisces | Fair complexion, troubles in love, few children, passionate, restless, faithful, indolent | Mars energy diffused and directionless; passive approach to conflict; spiritual warrior potential |
The Kuja Dosha connection: Mars is the planet most associated with marital discord in Vedic astrology (the famous Manglik condition). Its sign placement modifies how this martial energy plays out in relationships. Mars in Cancer (debilitated) in a marriage house can indicate passive-aggressive patterns, while Mars in Capricorn (exalted) in the same house might indicate a partner who is demanding but ultimately protective and responsible.
4. Mercury in the Twelve Signs
Mercury (Budha) governs intelligence, speech, trade, mathematics, writing and analytical thinking. As the fastest-moving visible planet, Mercury represents adaptability, communication and the rational mind. Its sign placement determines whether a person is a gifted orator (Gemini), a methodical researcher (Virgo), or a confused communicator (Pisces).
"In Virgo -- Learned, virtuous, liberal, fearless, ingenious, handsome, irritable, refined, subtle, intuitive, sociable, no self-control, morbid imaginations, dyspeptic difficulties, eloquent, author, priest, astronomer."
Mercury in Virgo -- its sign of both ownership and exaltation -- is one of the most intellectually powerful placements in the zodiac. The description reads like a resume of the ideal scholar: learned, ingenious, eloquent, author, astronomer. Even the negative traits ("no self-control, morbid imaginations") point to the classic pitfall of the brilliant mind -- overthinking and nervous anxiety.
| Sign | Key Results from Raman |
|---|---|
| Aries | Evil-minded, obstinate, clever, social, great endurance, materialistic, wavering mind, fond of speculation, impulsive, greedy, deceitful |
| Taurus | High position, well built, clever, logical, mental harmony, many children, liberal, wealthy, friends among women of eminence, showy |
| Gemini (Own) | Boastful, sweet speech, cultured, tactful, dexterous, inventive, taste in literature and arts, musician, studious |
| Cancer | Witty, likes music, disliked by relations, speculative, diplomatic, restless, sensual though religious, strong parental love |
| Leo | Few children, wanderer, proud, indolent, boastful, orator, good memory, poor, independent thinking, impulsive |
| Virgo (Own/Exalted) | Learned, virtuous, fearless, ingenious, handsome, refined, intuitive, sociable, eloquent, author, priest, astronomer |
| Libra | Fair complexion, sanguine disposition, perceptive faculties, frugal, courteous, philosophical, faithful, sociable, discreet |
| Scorpio | Short, curly hair, incentive to indulgence, crafty, malicious, selfish, subtle, indiscreet, bold, reckless |
| Sagittarius | Taste in sciences, respected, tall, well built, learned, rash, superstitious, vigorous, diplomatic, cunning, just |
| Capricorn | Selfless, business tendencies, economical, inconsistent, low stature, cunning, inventive, active, restless, suspicious |
| Aquarius | Middle stature, licentious, proud, quarrelsome, frank, sociable, rapid strides in life, famous, scholar, weak constitution |
| Pisces (Debil.) | A dependent, serves others, dexterous, peevish, indolent, petty-minded, respect for gods and Brahmins |
Why Mercury debilitation matters practically: Mercury debilitated in Pisces does not mean a person is unintelligent. Rather, it means that their intelligence operates through intuition, feeling and imagination rather than through logic and analytical precision. Many great artists, musicians and spiritual teachers have Mercury in Pisces. The "debilitation" simply means that Mercury's natural mode of expression -- sharp, logical, verbal -- is diffused into something more abstract. Whether this is a problem depends entirely on what the person needs Mercury to do in their chart.
5. Jupiter in the Twelve Signs
Jupiter (Guru or Brihaspati) is the great benefic -- the teacher, the guide, the bestower of wisdom, children, wealth and spiritual growth. Its sign placement determines whether a person's fortune flows easily or requires struggle, whether their moral compass is strong or compromised, and whether their life philosophy is expansive or narrow.
"In Cancer -- Well read, dignified, wealthy, comfortable, intelligent, swarthy complexion, inclined to social gossip, mathematician, faithful."
Jupiter exalted in Cancer is one of the most auspicious placements in all of Jyotish. Cancer's nurturing, protective qualities amplify Jupiter's natural beneficence, creating individuals who are genuinely wise, charitable and materially blessed. This placement often indicates strong family values, inherited wisdom and a life of relative comfort.
| Sign | Key Results from Raman |
|---|---|
| Aries | Love of grandeur, powerful, wealthy, prudent, many children, courteous, generous, firm, sympathetic, happy marriage, high position |
| Taurus | Stately, elegant, self-importance, liberal, dutiful sons, just, sympathetic, creative ability, despotic, healthy, happy marriage |
| Gemini | Oratorial ability, tall, well-built, benevolent, pure-hearted, scholarly, sagacious, diplomatic, linguist or poet, elegant |
| Cancer (Exalted) | Well read, dignified, wealthy, comfortable, intelligent, mathematician, faithful |
| Leo | Commanding appearance, tall, easily offended, ambitious, active, happy, intelligent, wise, prudent, generous, broad-minded, literary |
| Virgo | Middle stature, ambitious, selfish, stoical, affectionate, fortunate, stingy, lovable, beautiful wife, great endurance, learned |
| Libra | Handsome, free, open-minded, hasty, attractive, just, courteous, strong, able, religious, competent, unassuming, pleasing |
| Scorpio | Tall, elegant manners, serious, exacting, superior airs, selfish, imprudent, sub-servient to women, passionate, unhappy life |
| Sagittarius (Own) | Pretty inheritance, wealthy, influential, handsome, noble, trustworthy, charitable, good executive, artistic, open-minded |
| Capricorn (Debil.) | Tactless, good intention, disgraceful behaviour, generous, unhappy, irritable, inconsistent, avaricious, jealous |
| Aquarius | Learned, not rich, controversial figure, philosophical, popular, compassionate, sympathetic, humanitarian, melancholic, dreamy |
| Pisces (Own) | Good inheritance, stout, medium height, enterprising, political diplomacy, high position |
Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn: Note the phrase "good intention, disgraceful behaviour." This captures the essence of debilitated Jupiter perfectly -- the wisdom is present but the execution is flawed. Saturn-ruled Capricorn forces Jupiter's expansive, generous nature into a rigid, materialistic framework. The result is often someone who knows what is right but struggles to act on it consistently. However, if Saturn itself is well-placed, a Neecha Bhanga (cancellation of debilitation) can occur, transforming this placement into one of remarkable practical wisdom.
6. Venus in the Twelve Signs
Venus (Shukra) governs love, marriage, beauty, art, luxury, vehicles, and the pleasures of life. As the preceptor of the Asuras in mythology, Venus also carries deep occult knowledge and worldly wisdom. Its sign placement shapes how a person experiences love and relationships, their aesthetic sense, and their capacity for enjoying life's refinements.
"In Pisces -- Witty, tactful, learned, popular, just, ingenious, caricaturist, modest, refined, powerful, exalted, respected, pleasure-seeking."
Venus exalted in Pisces represents the pinnacle of devotional love and artistic refinement. Jupiter-ruled Pisces provides the spiritual depth and universal compassion that elevates Venus's natural attraction toward beauty into something transcendent. People with this placement often possess an extraordinary aesthetic sense and a capacity for selfless love.
| Sign | Key Results from Raman |
|---|---|
| Aries | Extravagant, active, artistic, dreamy, idealist, proficient in fine arts, licentious, sorrowful, fickle-minded, prudent, irreligious |
| Taurus (Own) | Well built, handsome, idealist, sensual, love of nature, fond of pleasure, elegant, taste in dancing and music, voluptuous |
| Gemini | Rich, gentle, kind, generous, eloquent, proud, respected, love of fine arts, learned, intelligent, good logician, dual marriage |
| Cancer | Melancholy, emotional, timid, more than one wife, haughty, sorrowful, inconsistent, many children, sensitive, learned |
| Leo | Money through women, pretty wife, wayward, conceited, passionate, emotional, zealous, licentious, attracted by the fair sex |
| Virgo (Debil.) | Petty-minded, licentious, unscrupulous, unhappy, illicit love, loquacious, rich, learned |
| Libra (Own) | Statesman, poet, intelligent, generous, philosophical, handsome, matrimonial felicity, passionate, proud, respected, intuitive |
| Scorpio | Broad features, quarrelsome, independent, artistic, unjust, proud, disappointed in love, haughty, not rich |
| Sagittarius | Medium height, powerful, wealthy, respected, generous, frank, happy domestic life, high position, philosophical |
| Capricorn | Fond of low class women, imprudent, ambitious, unprincipled, licentious, boastful, subtle, learned, weak body |
| Aquarius | Liked by all, middle stature, handsome, affable, persuasive, witty, timid, chaste, calm, helpful, humanitarian |
| Pisces (Exalted) | Witty, tactful, learned, popular, just, ingenious, modest, refined, powerful, exalted, respected, pleasure-seeking |
Venus debilitated in Virgo: Mercury-ruled Virgo is inherently analytical and critical -- qualities that clash with Venus's desire for unconditional beauty and love. This placement can produce someone who intellectualises their emotions, finds fault in partners, or struggles to simply relax and enjoy life. The phrase "illicit love" suggests that conventional romantic outlets feel unsatisfying, leading the person to seek love in unconventional or complicated ways. However, this same placement can produce exceptional artists who channel their romantic frustration into creative work.
7. Saturn in the Twelve Signs
Saturn (Shani) is the great taskmaster -- governing discipline, longevity, delays, suffering, service, and karmic lessons. While feared in popular astrology, Saturn is actually the planet most responsible for lasting achievement. Its sign placement determines whether life's inevitable difficulties produce resilience and wisdom or bitterness and despair.
"In Libra -- Famous, founder of institutions and the like, rich, tall, fair, self-conceited, handsome, tactful, powerful, respected, sound judgment, antagonistic, independent, proud, prominent, charitable, sub-servient to females."
Saturn exalted in Libra is extraordinary. The description -- "famous, founder of institutions, rich, respected, sound judgment" -- reads like a list of the world's most influential figures. Venus-ruled Libra provides Saturn with a sense of balance, justice and social grace that transforms its natural austerity into a force for building enduring structures. Many great political leaders, judges and institution-builders have this placement.
| Sign | Key Results from Raman |
|---|---|
| Aries (Debil.) | Idiotic, wanderer, insincere, peevish, resentful, cruel, fraudulent, immoral, boastful, quarrelsome, gloomy, mischievous |
| Taurus | Dark complexion, deceitful, successful, powerful, unorthodox, clever, likes solitude, voracious eater, persuasive, self-restraint |
| Gemini | Wandering nature, miserable, untidy, original, thin, subtle, ingenious, strategic, few children, taste for chemical and mechanical sciences |
| Cancer | Poor, weak teeth, pleasure-seeking, few sons, slow, dull, cunning, rich, selfish, deceitful, malicious, stubborn, devoid of motherly care |
| Leo | Middle stature, severe, obstinate, few sons, stubborn, unfortunate, conflicting, hard worker, good writer, evil-minded |
| Virgo | Dark complexion, malicious, poor, quarrelsome, erratic, narrow-minded, rude, conservative, taste for public life, weak health |
| Libra (Exalted) | Famous, founder of institutions, rich, tall, fair, tactful, powerful, respected, sound judgment, independent, charitable |
| Scorpio | Rash, indifferent, hard-hearted, adventurous, petty, self-conceited, reserved, unscrupulous, violent, unhappy, danger from poisons and fire |
| Sagittarius | Pushful, artful, cunning, famous, peaceful, faithful, pretentious, apparently generous, troubles with wife, courteous, dutiful children |
| Capricorn (Own) | Intelligent, domestic felicity, selfish, covetous, peevish, intellectual, learned, suspicious, reflective, revengeful, prudent |
| Aquarius (Own) | Practical, able, diplomatic, ingenious, prudent, happy, reflective, intellectual, philosophical, vanquished by enemies |
| Pisces | Clever, pushful, gifted, polite, happy, good wife, trustworthy, scheming, wealthy, helpful |
Saturn debilitated in Aries: Mars-ruled Aries demands quick, impulsive action -- the exact opposite of Saturn's careful, methodical nature. The result is a planet that cannot express its discipline constructively, leading to the grim catalogue Raman provides: "idiotic, wanderer, insincere, cruel." In modern practice, this placement often manifests as chronic frustration -- the person wants to act quickly but feels constantly blocked, leading to resentment and impulsive poor decisions. The remedy lies in cultivating patience and finding structured outlets for Aries energy (martial arts, competitive sports, entrepreneurship with a mentor).
8. Rahu and Ketu: The Shadow Planets
"Rahu and Ketu are aprakasha grahas or lustreless planets and they give the results of the lords of the house they occupy."
Raman does not provide separate sign-wise listings for Rahu and Ketu because these mathematical points (the north and south lunar nodes) do not have physical bodies emitting their own light. Instead, they act as amplifiers and transformers of the sign lord's energy. If Rahu occupies Aries, it takes on the qualities of Mars (the lord of Aries) and amplifies them in its characteristically obsessive, insatiable manner. If Ketu occupies Pisces, it channels Jupiter's spiritual and philosophical nature but in a detached, otherworldly way.
This principle has profound practical implications. When analysing Rahu or Ketu in a chart:
- Identify the sign they occupy.
- Find the lord of that sign.
- Assess the lord's condition -- its own sign placement, aspects, conjunctions and house position.
- Apply that assessment to Rahu or Ketu, remembering that Rahu amplifies (often to excess) while Ketu detaches (often creating indifference or spiritual depth).
For example, Rahu in Taurus (lord = Venus) in a chart where Venus is exalted in Pisces would indicate an intense, almost obsessive attraction to beauty, luxury and material pleasures -- but with a spiritual or artistic dimension contributed by Venus's exalted status. The same Rahu in Taurus with Venus debilitated in Virgo would indicate similar material desires but with much more difficulty in fulfilling them and a tendency toward unhealthy attachments.
9. Putting It All Together: A Synthesis Method
The lists in this chapter can feel overwhelming -- seven planets across twelve signs means 84 distinct combinations to remember. Rather than memorising each entry, focus on understanding the underlying logic. Here is a systematic approach to predicting planet-in-sign results without relying purely on rote memory:
Step 1: Know the Planet's Core Nature
Every planet has a fundamental character: the Sun seeks authority, the Moon seeks emotional security, Mars seeks action, Mercury seeks information, Jupiter seeks wisdom, Venus seeks pleasure, and Saturn seeks structure. This core nature never changes regardless of sign placement.
Step 2: Know the Sign's Environment
Each sign provides a specific "environment" for the planet. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are dynamic and action-oriented. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are practical and material. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are intellectual and social. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are emotional and intuitive.
Step 3: Assess Compatibility
When a planet's nature aligns with the sign's environment, results are positive. Mars (action) in Aries (dynamic) = excellent. When they clash, results are difficult. Saturn (slow, structured) in Aries (fast, impulsive) = problematic. When they are neutral, results are mixed and heavily dependent on aspects and house placement.
Step 4: Layer with House Placement
Finally, combine the sign-based quality (from this chapter) with the house-based area of life (from Chapter 21). Jupiter in Cancer (exalted = wisdom, dignity) in the 10th house (career) = a dignified, respected career in teaching, law, or religion. The same Jupiter in Cancer in the 6th house (enemies, service) = wisdom applied to overcoming obstacles, possibly a career in healthcare or dispute resolution.
"Results must be duly modified or qualified according to the affliction or otherwise of the planets concerned."
This final reminder from Raman bears repeating: no sign placement operates in isolation. A debilitated planet receiving the aspect of its exaltation lord experiences Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga -- cancellation of debilitation that can actually produce more remarkable results than a simply well-placed planet. Astrology is the art of synthesis, and these sign-based descriptions are ingredients, not finished dishes.
Key Takeaways
- House vs Sign: Chapter 21 (planets in houses) shows the area of life affected; this chapter shows the quality of expression based on sign placement. Both must be combined for accurate prediction.
- Exaltation vs Debilitation: A planet in its sign of exaltation gives its best results; in debilitation, its worst. Own sign gives strong, reliable results. But debilitation can be cancelled by specific yogas.
- Modify always: The qualities hold good only when the planet is neither particularly glorified nor afflicted. Aspects, conjunctions and house lordships all modify the baseline description.
- Rahu and Ketu: Being lustreless planets, they take on the character of the sign lord they occupy. Analyse the sign lord's condition to predict their results.
- The Moon sign is paramount: In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign (Janma Rashi) carries more weight than the Sun sign for personality assessment and is the basis for the dasha system.
- Logic over memorisation: Instead of memorising 84 planet-sign combinations, understand the underlying compatibility between a planet's nature and a sign's environment.
- Neecha Bhanga: Debilitated planets receiving specific yogas (aspect from exaltation lord, conjunction with exaltation lord, etc.) can produce extraordinary results -- sometimes surpassing normally well-placed planets.
- Practical application: When reading a chart, note the sign for temperament, the house for life area, then check aspects and conjunctions for modifications. The final prediction is always a synthesis.
