Hindu Predictive Astrology Chapter 21: Planets in Different Bhavas or Houses - A Modern Guide

Hindu Predictive Astrology — Modern Reader's Guide

A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology textbook by B.V. Raman, first published in 1938.

Chapter 21 of 36 · Topics: Results of Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in all 12 houses

Introduction: Why House Placement Matters

This chapter is one of the most consulted references in all of Vedic astrology. It catalogues the results produced when each of the nine grahas (planets) occupies each of the twelve bhavas (houses). For a practitioner sitting down to read a horoscope, this is the essential lookup table -- a starting point from which every deeper analysis begins.

In Vedic astrology, the house a planet occupies determines the arena of life it will influence. The 1st house governs the self and body; the 7th governs marriage and partnerships; the 10th governs career and public reputation. When a planet sits in a particular house, it colours that life area with its own nature -- a benefic like Jupiter brings expansion and grace, while a malefic like Saturn brings restriction and delay. But the picture is never that simple, as Raman himself cautions.

"The results vary according to the strength and weakness of each planet. Results must be duly modified or qualified according to the affliction or otherwise of the planets concerned."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 21

This means the tables below are baseline descriptions. A planet's sign placement, aspects from other planets, conjunction partners, divisional chart position (especially the Navamsa), and its role as a functional benefic or malefic for the ascendant all modify the raw results. Think of these descriptions as the default setting -- the starting configuration before the rest of the chart refines it.

Understanding the Twelve Bhavas

Before diving into planet-by-planet results, it helps to understand the houses themselves. The twelve bhavas divide life into distinct departments. Classical texts group them into several categories that determine whether a planet placed there tends to produce good or difficult results:

CategoryHousesSignificance
Kendra (Angular)1, 4, 7, 10Pillars of the chart -- self, home, partnership, career. Benefics here are strongly positive.
Trikona (Trinal)1, 5, 9Houses of dharma, creativity, and fortune. The most auspicious placements.
Upachaya (Growth)3, 6, 10, 11Houses that improve over time. Malefics do surprisingly well here.
Dusthana (Difficult)6, 8, 12Houses of enemies, sudden events, and loss. Even benefics struggle here.
Maraka (Inflicting)2, 7Houses that can indicate health challenges during their planetary periods.

"Jupiter and Venus generally produce the best results in the kendras and trikonas, while Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu often do well in the upachaya houses -- the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 21

This principle is visible throughout the tables that follow. Notice how Jupiter in the 1st gives a "magnetic personality" and "long life," but in the 6th becomes "obscure" and "unlucky." Meanwhile, Mars in the 6th produces "success over enemies" and "political success" -- a malefic thriving in an upachaya dusthana.

1. The Sun in the Twelve Houses

The Sun represents the soul, authority, father, government, vitality, and ego. It is the king of the planetary cabinet, and its house placement reveals where a person's sense of identity and authority is directed. The Sun is a natural malefic of mild intensity -- it burns and separates, but also illuminates and empowers.

"In the first house -- Righteous-minded, healthy, bilious, eye-disease, intelligence, good morals, political success, stately appearance, humanitarian instincts, lazy in work, fond of daring deeds, hot constitution, strong will, caprice, generosity."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 21
HouseResults
1stRighteous-minded, healthy, bilious, eye-disease, intelligence, good morals, political success, stately appearance, humanitarian instincts, lazy in work, fond of daring deeds, hot constitution, strong will, generosity, neglect of personal credit
2ndDiseased face, losses from prosecutions, good earnings, inclined to waste, bright speech, well-educated, scientific, stubborn and peevish temper, danger in the 25th year, stammering
3rdCourageous, liberal, adventurous, famous, intelligent, wealthy, successful, restless
4thMental worry, meditative, defective organs, success in foreign countries, hatred of relations, keen-minded, sensitive, good reputation after middle age, quarrels without causes, squanders paternal property, philosophical
5thIntelligent, poor, few children, danger to father early, corpulent, unhappy, disturbed in mind, lover of fine arts, tactful in decision
6thGood administrative ability, few enemies, bold, successful, war-like, wealthy, gains from enemies, clever in planning, terror to enemies, executive ability, colic troubles
7thLate and troubled marriage, loose morals, hatred by the fair sex, fond of travelling, submissive to wife, wealth through female agency, fond of foreign things, discontented
8thLong life, uncharitable, sickly constitution, sudden gains, eye complaints, sores in head, poor and uneventful life, narrow and obscure
9thWell read in solar sciences, charitable, godly, lucky, devoted, self-acquired property, many lands, philosophical, lover of poetry and music, successful agriculturist, learned in esoteric subjects
10thBold, courageous, famous, clever in acquiring wealth, healthy, learned, adventurous, founder of institutions, high position, dutiful sons, successful military or political career
11thLearned, wealthy, stately and persevering, success without much effort, famous, many enemies, wealth through fair means, man of principles, great sagacity
12thSinful, poor, fallen, thieving nature, unsuccessful, adulterous, neglected, lover of esoteric and occult knowledge, no happiness from children

Modern reading tip: The Sun in the 10th is one of the strongest career placements in Vedic astrology, giving natural authority and public recognition. The Sun in the 7th, however, often creates ego clashes in marriage -- the king does not easily share his throne with a partner. The 12th house Sun points to someone who may find fulfilment in solitude, spiritual retreat, or work behind the scenes rather than in the spotlight.

2. The Moon in the Twelve Houses

The Moon governs the mind, emotions, mother, public image, and overall mental peace. In Vedic astrology it is arguably the most important planet because the entire dasha system typically runs from the Moon's nakshatra. A well-placed Moon gives emotional stability and popularity; an afflicted Moon brings anxiety, restlessness, and domestic troubles.

"In the Ascendant -- Fanciful and romantic, moderate eater, an attractive appearance, inclined to corpulence, much travelling, capricious, sociable, easy going, loved by the opposite sex, shy, modest, stubborn, proud, fickle-minded and eccentric."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 21
HouseResults
1stFanciful, romantic, attractive, inclined to corpulence, much travelling, loved by opposite sex, shy, modest, stubborn, fickle-minded, eccentric
2ndWealthy, handsome, generous, highly intelligent, breaks in education, charming, poetical, sweet speech, persuasive, much admired
3rdSickly, dyspeptic, mild, lean, many brothers, cruel, educated, consumption, intelligent, fond of travelling, active-minded
4thComfortable, fine taste, polite, high education, happy, wealthy, successful, good mother, popular, licentious
5thSubtle, handsome wife, shrewd, showy, many daughters, intelligent, high political office, gains through quadrupeds
6thSubmissive, indolent, short-tempered, lazy, slender body, poor, drunkard, stomach troubles, many foes, worried by cousins
7thPassionate, handsome wife, mother short-lived, good family, pains in the loins, social, successful, jealous, energetic
8thUnhealthy, legacy, capricious, mother short-lived, few children, bilious, slender, bad sight, kidney disease, easy acquisitions
9thPopular, educated, intelligent, lover of fiction, builder of charitable institutions, wealthy, godly, religious, agricultural success, good reputation
10thPersuasive, charitable, shrewd, bold, great position, active, trustee of religious institutions, many friends, easy success, wealthy, long life
11thMany children, powerful, philanthropic, literary and artistic taste, influential, many friends, great position, liked by the fair sex
12thObstructed, deformed, narrow-minded, cruel, unhappy, obscure, powerless, deceived, solitary, miserable

Modern reading tip: The Moon in the 4th house is considered one of the happiest placements -- it gives emotional contentment, a comfortable home, and a nurturing mother. The Moon in the 12th, by contrast, can indicate a person who feels emotionally isolated or who finds peace only through meditation and withdrawal. For mental health assessments in a chart, the Moon's house and aspects are the first thing an astrologer examines.

3. Mars in the Twelve Houses

Mars is the commander-in-chief -- a planet of energy, courage, aggression, and physical vitality. Its house placement shows where a person directs their fighting spirit. Mars is a first-rate malefic and is especially significant in marriage compatibility analysis because of the Kuja Dosha (Mangal Dosha), which is assessed by Mars's position in houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12.

"In the seventh house -- Two wives or friction with wife, dropsy, rash speculations, unsuccessful, intelligent, tactless, stubborn, idiosyncratic, peevish, passionate, tension in married life."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 21
HouseResults
1stHot constitution, scars in body, pilfering habits, early danger to father, reddish complexion, active, adventurous, powerful, low-minded
2ndQuarrelsome, extravagant, harsh speech, short-tempered, wasteful, broken education, large patrimony, aggressive, unpopular
3rdPioneering, few brothers, courageous, intelligent, reckless, adventurous, short-tempered, unprincipled
4thSickly mother, quarrels, unhappy home life, domestic quarrels, uncomfortable, coarse, brutal, tyrannical
5thUnpopular, no issues, ambitious, intelligent, persevering, unhappy, bold, unprincipled, decisive
6thSuccessful, good lands, rich, success over enemies, intelligent, political success, powerful, worry from near relations
7thTwo wives or friction with wife, rash speculations, unsuccessful, stubborn, passionate, tension in married life
8thShort life, few children, danger to maternal uncles, widower later, hater of relations, bad sight, extra-marital relations
9thUnkind, worldly, successful trader, sickly father, dependent life, self-seeking, stubborn, impetuous, logical
10thFounder of institutions, energetic, adventurous, wealthy, active, famous, self-made man, good agriculturist, decisive
11thLearned, educated, wealthy, influential, property, crafty, happy, commanding
12thUnsuccessful, poor, rotten body, unpopular, suffering, liable to fraud, deformed eyes, fruitless efforts

Modern reading tip: Mars in the 10th is one of the finest placements for career ambition -- it produces self-made individuals, military leaders, and entrepreneurs. Mars in the 4th, on the other hand, is one of the most challenging positions for domestic peace, often indicating a turbulent home environment during childhood. In compatibility analysis, Mars in houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12 creates Mangal Dosha, which should ideally be matched with a partner who has a similar placement.

4. Mercury in the Twelve Houses

Mercury is the prince of the planetary cabinet -- governing intellect, communication, commerce, education, and adaptability. It is the only planet that is classified as a natural benefic when alone but takes on the nature of whatever planet it associates with. Mercury's house placement reveals where a person applies their analytical and communicative skills.

2ndLearned in philosophy, sweet speech, humorous, many children, wealthy, clever in earning money, fine manners, self-acquisition
3rdHappy mother, clever, loved by fair sex, tactful, diplomatic, bold, sensible

11thWealthy, happy, mathematical faculty, good astrologer, many friends, success in trade, logical and scientific
12thPhilosophical, intelligent, worried, obliging, capricious, few children, danger to mother, lacking in opportunities

"In the seventh house -- Diplomatic, interesting literary ability early in life and success through it, early marriage, wife handsome, dutiful and short-tempered, learned in astrology, astronomy and mathematics, success in trade."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 21

Modern reading tip: Mercury in the 1st gives a youthful, communicative personality -- these are the natural writers, speakers, and analysts. Mercury in the 11th is excellent for financial acumen and networking. In the 12th house, Mercury tends to produce overthinking and anxiety, but also a capacity for deep philosophical and spiritual inquiry.

5. Jupiter in the Twelve Houses

Jupiter is the Guru -- the great benefic, teacher, and expander. It governs wisdom, children, wealth, dharma, religion, and good fortune. Jupiter's house placement is one of the most important factors in determining a person's overall prosperity and moral compass. A strong Jupiter can single-handedly lift a chart, while a weak one leaves a person struggling with questions of meaning and purpose.

"In the first house -- Magnetic personality, good grammarian, majestic appearance, highly educated, many children, learned, dexterous, long-lived, respected by rulers, political success, sagacious, influential, leader."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 21
HouseResults

3rdFamous, many brothers, devoted to family, miserly, obliging, polite, good agriculturist, thrifty, energetic
4thGood conveyances, educated, happy, wealthy, founder of charitable institutions, good inheritance, good mother, contented life
5thBroad eyes, handsome, statesmanly ability, high position, intelligent, obedient children, pure-hearted, a leader
6thObscure, unlucky, troubled, dyspeptic, witty, unsuccessful, intelligent, foeless
7thEducated, proud, good wife, diplomatic ability, speculative, success in agriculture, virtuous wife, pilgrimage
8thUnhappy, earnings by undignified means, long life, mean, degraded, pretending to be charitable, dirty habits
9thCharitable, many children, devoted, religious, merciful, principled, generous, long-lived father, famous, high position, God-fearing
10thVirtuous, learned, clever in acquisition, determined, principled, founder of institutions, ambitious, scrupulous
11thLover of music, very wealthy, statesmanly ability, charitable, influential, many friends, philanthropic, God-fearing
12thSadistic, poor, few children, unlucky, lascivious, later inclined to asceticism, pious in after-life

Modern reading tip: Jupiter in the 5th and 9th houses forms the powerful Dhana Yoga and Raja Yoga potential for many ascendants. Jupiter in the 9th is considered one of the luckiest placements in all of Vedic astrology -- it blesses the father, brings spiritual inclination, and often indicates foreign travel for higher education. Jupiter in the 6th or 8th, despite being the great benefic, struggles to deliver its full potential and can indicate hypocrisy in religious matters.

6. Venus in the Twelve Houses

Venus is the minister of the planetary cabinet and the planet of love, beauty, luxury, art, and sensual pleasure. It governs marriage, vehicles, comforts, and creative talent. Venus is the brightest natural benefic and tends to bring grace, refinement, and material comfort to whichever house it occupies. Its placement is crucial for evaluating marriage prospects and artistic potential.

HouseResults
1stExpert mathematician, very fortunate, ambitious, bold, long life, fond of wife, skilled in fine arts, pleasing, astrologer, leader, much magnetic power

11thInfluential, learned, wealthy, good conveyances, successful, many friends, much popularity
12thMean-minded, miserly, obscure, licentious, unprincipled, weak eyes, unhappy love affairs, pretentious

Modern reading tip: Venus in the 7th is the classic placement for a happy, romantic marriage. Venus in the 4th brings luxury and a beautiful home. In the 12th house, Venus produces a curious mix -- while the general results are negative, this placement is actually considered good for "bed pleasures" (the 12th house rules the bedroom) and for spiritual devotion through art and beauty.

7. Saturn in the Twelve Houses

Saturn is the servant -- the planet of discipline, delay, hard work, sorrow, longevity, and karmic lessons. It is the greatest malefic, and its house placement reveals where a person will face their most persistent challenges and where they must put in sustained effort over many years. Yet Saturn also rewards patience: wherever it sits, the results improve markedly after the age of 36.

"In the first house -- Foreign customs and habits, perverted mind, tyrannical, well-built thighs, strong-minded, cunning, thrifty, passionate, sickly, aspiring, deformed, flatulence."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 21

11thLearned, feared, respected, very wealthy, landed property, political success, influential
12thDeformed, squint eyes, losses in trade, learned in occult science, poor, spendthrift, many enemies, attracted to yoga later

Modern reading tip: Saturn in the 11th is one of its best placements -- it gives steady, long-lasting wealth and powerful connections that build over time. Saturn in the 3rd gives courage and determination (a malefic doing well in an upachaya house). Saturn in the 5th is one of the most challenging positions for having children and can indicate delays or difficulties in conception. In the 10th house, Saturn produces a workaholic who experiences dramatic career fluctuations but ultimately achieves lasting professional recognition.

8. Rahu and Ketu in the Twelve Houses

Rahu (the North Node) and Ketu (the South Node) are the shadow planets -- chaya grahas. They are always exactly opposite each other in the chart, so when Rahu is in the 1st house, Ketu is in the 7th, and so on. Rahu amplifies, obsesses, and creates insatiable desire for whatever house it occupies. Ketu detaches, spiritualises, and creates a sense of "been there, done that" for its house. Together they represent the axis of karmic destiny in the chart.

"Rahu and Ketu are aprakasha grahas or lustreless planets and they give the results of the lords of the house they occupy."

11thWealthy, influential, many children, good agriculturistHumorous, witty, licentious, intelligent, wealthy
12thDeformed, few children, defective sight, many losses, saintlyCapricious, unsettled mind, foreign residence, spiritual knowledge, much travelling

Modern reading tip: Rahu in the 10th is often found in the charts of politicians, actors, and public figures -- it creates an obsessive drive for worldly recognition. Ketu in the 12th is considered one of the best spiritual placements, naturally inclining a person toward meditation and moksha. The Rahu-Ketu axis through the 1st and 7th houses often creates intense relationship karma -- a lifetime of learning to balance self-identity with partnership.

How to Use This Chapter in Practice

When analysing a horoscope, the systematic approach is to go planet by planet through the tables above. For each planet, note the house it occupies and read the corresponding description. Then layer in the following modifiers:

  1. Sign strength: Is the planet in its own sign, exalted, debilitated, or in a friendly/enemy sign? This dramatically alters the baseline results.
  2. Aspects: Which planets aspect the house and its occupant? Jupiter's aspect can uplift even a struggling planet; Saturn's aspect can delay an otherwise good result.
  3. Conjunctions: Planets sharing a house blend their energies. Mercury conjunct Mars creates sharp, argumentative speech; Mercury conjunct Jupiter creates learned, wise speech.
  4. Navamsa position: The D-9 chart reveals the deeper potential. A planet weak in the Rasi but strong in the Navamsa will eventually deliver its promise, often after marriage or in the second half of life.
  5. Lordship: A planet ruling benefic houses (trikonas and kendras) will behave better even in a difficult house position, while a planet ruling dusthanas may cause trouble even in a good house.

"In the above description, the qualities ascribed hold good only when a particular planet is not either glorified or afflicted. Results must be duly modified or qualified according to the affliction or otherwise of the planets concerned."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 21

This is the crucial caveat that separates a beginner's reading from an experienced astrologer's analysis. The tables in this chapter are the foundation, not the final answer. They provide the raw material from which a nuanced prediction is built.

Benefics vs. Malefics: A Pattern Summary

Reading through all nine planet tables, a clear pattern emerges regarding which houses favour benefic planets and which favour malefic ones. The following summary table distils the general trend:

HouseBenefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon)Malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu)
1stExcellent -- magnetic personality, fortune, beautyMixed -- gives courage and strength but also health issues, scars
2ndGood -- wealth, sweet speech, educationDifficult -- harsh speech, family discord, financial instability
3rdModerate -- intelligence but some challengesGood -- courage, adventurousness, pioneering spirit
4thExcellent -- happy home, good education, vehiclesDifficult -- domestic unrest, danger to mother, mental worry
5thGood -- intelligent children, political officeDifficult -- few or no children, troubled mind
6thDifficult -- even benefics struggle hereGood -- victory over enemies, success through struggle
7thGood -- happy marriage, diplomatic successDifficult -- marital friction, multiple marriages
8thChallenging -- mixed results, possible longevityVery difficult -- short life, disgrace, hidden troubles
9thExcellent -- religious, charitable, fortunateChallenging -- worldly, irreligious, father's health issues
10thGood -- virtuous career, public respectGood -- self-made success, fame, founding institutions
11thExcellent -- wealth, friends, fulfilmentGood -- wealth, political success, influence
12thDifficult -- losses, obscurity, weak eyesVery difficult -- deformity, enemies, fraud, suffering

Notice how the 10th and 11th houses are generally positive for all planets -- these are the houses where even malefics find constructive expression through career achievement and gains. The 6th, 8th, and 12th remain universally challenging, though malefics in the 6th can paradoxically produce victory and success through overcoming obstacles.

Key Takeaways

  • Reference chapter: Use these tables as a quick reference when analysing any horoscope -- look up each planet's house position for the baseline personality sketch.
  • Benefics in kendras and trikonas: Jupiter and Venus produce their best results in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, and 11th houses. Place them here and life flows more easily.
  • Malefics in upachaya houses: Mars, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu often do surprisingly well in the 3rd, 6th, 10th, and 11th (upachaya) houses, turning their aggressive energy into worldly achievement.
  • The dusthana caveat: Even the greatest benefic (Jupiter) becomes "obscure and unlucky" in the 6th house, and "sadistic and poor" in the 12th. No planet is immune to the dusthana effect.
  • Always modify with context: These are baseline results only. Aspects, sign placement, navamsa disposition, and the planet's role as a functional benefic or malefic for the specific ascendant will significantly alter outcomes.
  • The Rahu-Ketu axis: These shadow planets always occupy opposite houses and reveal the axis of karmic destiny. They give results similar to the lords of the houses they occupy.
  • Saturn rewards patience: Saturn's difficult placements often improve markedly after age 36. Early hardship in Saturn-influenced houses typically transforms into late-life wisdom and stability.
  • Mars and marriage: Mars in houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12 creates Mangal Dosha, a significant factor in compatibility matching that should not be overlooked.
