Sun Sign Compatibility Is a Myth: Why You Need the Full Horoscope
Pop astrology says "Aries and Leo are a perfect match" or "avoid Scorpios if you're a Gemini." These sun-sign columns are entertainment, not astrology. They reduce the vast complexity of two human beings to a single variable — the position of the Sun at birth — and pretend that this alone can predict whether a relationship will succeed or fail.
In Vedic astrology, the Sun sign (Rasi) is just one of 12 factors checked for marriage compatibility. And even the Moon sign alone is insufficient. The ancient system demands a complete assessment of both birth charts before any conclusion about compatibility can be drawn.
As B.V. Raman writes in Muhurtha:
"One cannot decide the make-up of a person merely on the basis of the Moon's situation, though one can glean a few psychological facts. It is the total assessment of each horoscope that is to be considered before applying the tests for mutual compatibility."

What Sun Sign Compatibility Actually Checks
In Western astrology, sun sign compatibility is based on the element (fire, earth, air, water) and the geometric relationship between signs. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are said to pair well with other fire signs or air signs, while earth pairs with water, and so on. It is a simple, tidy system — and that is precisely the problem.
In Vedic astrology, the closest equivalent is Rasi Kuta — the relationship between the Moon signs (not Sun signs) of the couple. But even this factor only accounts for 7 out of 36 possible points in the full compatibility assessment.
What most people do not realize is that the position matters enormously, and it is not symmetrical. If the boy's Rasi is 2nd from the girl's, the result is considered evil. But if the girl's Rasi is 2nd from the boy's, it indicates good longevity for the couple.
"If the Rasi of the boy happens to be the 2nd from that of the girl and if the Rasi of the girl happens to be the 12th from that of the boy, evil results will follow."
The 6/8 relationship (known as Shadashtaka) is particularly dangerous — when the Moon signs are six or eight positions apart, it indicates deep-rooted incompatibility that often manifests as constant quarreling, mutual distrust, and eventual separation. A simple "what's your sign?" question cannot capture any of this nuance.
The 11 Factors You're Missing
Beyond Rasi Kuta, there are 11 other Kutas that a proper Vedic compatibility analysis must examine. Each one probes a different dimension of the relationship:
- Nadi Kuta (8 points) — Genetic and physiological compatibility. This carries the highest weight in the entire system. A Nadi Dosha (mismatch) is considered so serious that many traditions refuse to proceed with a marriage if it is present.
- Gana Kuta (6 points) — Temperament matching. People are classified as Deva (divine), Manushya (human), or Rakshasa (demonic). A Deva-Rakshasa pairing usually leads to fundamental friction in values and behavior.
- Graha Maitri (5 points) — Planetary friendship, which determines mental harmony. This is arguably the most practically important Kuta for day-to-day happiness.
- Yoni Kuta (4 points) — Sexual and physical compatibility, assessed through animal symbolism. Hostile animal pairings indicate dissatisfaction and frustration.
- Dina Kuta (3 points) — Daily fortune and health. A bad Dina Kuta can lead to chronic minor health issues and mundane friction in daily living.
- Vasya Kuta (2 points) — Magnetic attraction and amenability. This factor determines how naturally drawn the two people are to each other.
- Varna Kuta (1 point) — Spiritual development and ego compatibility. Though it carries the fewest points, it reflects the couple's capacity for spiritual growth together.
In addition to the scored Kutas above, there are critical non-scored factors that can override even a high point total:
- Rajju — Duration of married life. A Rajju Dosha is one of the most feared indicators, as it threatens the longevity of the marriage itself.
- Vedha — Affliction or mutual repulsion. Certain birth stars are fundamentally antagonistic to each other.
- Mahendra — Prosperity, well-being of children, and longevity of the bond.
- Stree-Deergha — The woman's well-being and her sense of respect and space within the marriage.
"Rasyadhipathi or Graha Maitram — This is the most important Kuta inasmuch as it deals with the psychological dispositions of the Couple."
Even Rasi Kuta itself has an important exception: a bad Rasi position is cancelled if the lords of the two signs are friends (Graha Maitri). This means that two Moon signs in the dreaded 6/8 position might still be compatible if their ruling planets share a friendship. No sun-sign column will ever tell you this.

Graha Maitri: The Factor That Actually Predicts Harmony
B.V. Raman considered Graha Maitri (planetary friendship) to be more important than Rasi Kuta for predicting the actual quality of married life. While Rasi Kuta checks the geometric relationship between Moon signs, Graha Maitri examines whether the ruling planets of those signs are friends, neutral, or enemies.
"The mental qualities of the parties and their affection for each other are admittedly of vital importance to their happiness. This must be tested before marriage."
The planetary friendship table is essential knowledge for understanding this factor:
- Sun — Friends: Moon, Mars, Jupiter. Enemies: Saturn, Venus. Neutral: Mercury.
- Moon — Friends: Sun, Mercury. Enemies: None. Neutral: Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn.
- Mars — Friends: Sun, Moon, Jupiter. Enemies: Mercury. Neutral: Venus, Saturn.
- Mercury — Friends: Sun, Venus. Enemies: Moon. Neutral: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn.
- Jupiter — Friends: Sun, Moon, Mars. Enemies: Mercury, Venus. Neutral: Saturn.
- Venus — Friends: Mercury, Saturn. Enemies: Sun, Moon. Neutral: Mars, Jupiter.
- Saturn — Friends: Mercury, Venus. Enemies: Sun, Moon, Mars. Neutral: Jupiter.
If the Moon sign lords of the couple are mutual friends, Graha Maitri is excellent. If one is a friend and the other is neutral, it is acceptable. If both are neutral, it is middling. If they are enemies, the couple will struggle with mental and emotional disconnect regardless of how well other factors score.
Even when Graha Maitri fails at the Rasi level, there is a deeper check available through the Navamsa (the 9th divisional chart). As Raman notes:
"Even when there is no friendship between the Janma Rasi lords of the bridegroom and bride, Rasi Kuta may be said to exist if friendship prevails between the planets owning the Navamsas occupied by the Moon."
This level of analysis requires knowing the exact birth time and location — information that a sun sign column never asks for and cannot use.
The Three Checks Before Any Kuta
Before the 12 Kutas are even applied, B.V. Raman insists on three foundational checks that must be satisfied first:
"In selecting horoscopes for marriage purposes, three factors have to be carefully considered: (a) The longevity of the bride and the bridegroom. (b) The larger strength of the 7th and 8th houses. (c) Agreeability in regard to the Kutas."
Sun sign compatibility skips all three of these foundational requirements. Consider what is being missed:
- Longevity analysis — What is the point of a "perfect match" if one partner's chart indicates a short life? The Vedic system checks the 8th house, its lord, and Saturn's influence to assess the lifespan of both individuals before proceeding.
- 7th house strength — The 7th house governs marriage itself. Its lord, the planets placed in it, and the aspects it receives determine the fundamental capacity of each person for a successful partnership. Mars-Venus disposition, Jupiter's protective influence, and the condition of the 7th lord in the Navamsa are all critical indicators.
- Dosha matching — Specific afflictions like Mangala Dosha (Mars Dosha) must be checked and ideally matched between both charts. A person with Mars Dosha should marry another person with Mars Dosha, or the imbalance can cause serious problems.
None of these factors are captured by the question "what's your sign?" The 7th house strength, Mars-Venus disposition, Jupiter's influence, and longevity indicators all require a complete birth chart calculated from the exact time and place of birth.
"Happiness largely rests upon so many other factors that the aid of astrology should be sought for by every sensible individual."
Get the Real Picture
Stop relying on magazine horoscopes for life decisions. The question of who you should marry — or whether your current relationship has a strong foundation — deserves more than a one-dimensional answer based on the month you were born.
A proper Vedic compatibility check examines all 12 Kutas with their full set of exceptions and cancellations. It accounts for Rajju, Vedha, Mahendra, and Stree-Deergha — the non-scored factors that can make or break a marriage regardless of the point total. It checks the foundational requirements of longevity, 7th house strength, and Dosha matching before any Kuta is even considered.
Our Match Checker uses the complete B.V. Raman system — all 12 Kutas, not just your sun sign. It takes both partners' birth time and location to calculate the actual birth chart, then runs every compatibility test with the proper exceptions and overrides that the classical texts demand.
The difference between a sun-sign column and a full Vedic compatibility analysis is the difference between glancing at a book cover and reading every chapter. Your relationship deserves the full reading.
