Prasna Marga Chapter 12: The Cosmic Blueprint of Health - A Modern Guide

Prasna Marga — Modern Reader's Guide

A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology text by Harihara, translated by B.V. Raman.

Chapter 12 of 32 • Stanzas 1–131 • Topics: Natural vs Acquired Diseases, The Three Doshas, Mental Health (Unmada), Epilepsy, Planetary Healing

Section: Prasna Marga Chapter 12 Medical Astrology

Chapter 12 is perhaps the most practical chapter for anyone interested in the intersection of Vedic Astrology and Modern Health. It moves from the philosophical thresholds of life and death into the daily reality of the human body.

The core philosophy of this chapter is that planets in unfavorable houses bring appropriate diseases. By diagnosing the planetary influence, an astrologer can identify the root cause of an illness long before modern diagnostics might detect it. The text covers everything from biological humours (*Doshas*) to specialized mental health conditions like lunacy and epilepsy.

"After ascertaining whether the sick man will recover or die, the nature of treatment to be given should be considered. In order to give the best medical treatment, a careful diagnosis of the nature of disease is essential."

Stanza 1

1. The Classification of Disease

Prasna Marga, Chapter XII, Stanzas 18–24

Vedic astrology classifies every ailment into four distinct categories. Understanding which quadrant a disease falls into determines the type of treatment needed:

Nija (Natural / Internal)

Arises from within the body or mind.
Sarirotha: Physical (Vata, Pitta, Kapha imbalances).
Chittotha: Mental (Fear, sorrow, desire).

Agantuka (Acquired / External)

Comes from outside forces.
Drishtanimittaja: Known causes (accidents, falls, toxins).
Adrishtanimittaja: Unknown/Psychic causes (spirit possession, karmic debts).

The Diagnostic Rule: Bodily diseases are read from the 8th House, mental diseases from the relationship between the 5th and 8th lords, and external injuries from the 6th House.

2. The Three Humours (Doshas)

Prasna Marga, Chapter XII, Stanzas 10–11

Each planet governs a specific biological "vibration" or odour known as a Dosha. When a planet is afflicted, that specific vapour becomes unbalanced in the body:

Planet Humour (Dosha) Biological Nature
SunPitta (Bile) + Vata (Wind)Internal heat, metabolic energy.
MoonVata (Wind) + Kapha (Phlegm)Fluid regulation, emotional stability.
MarsPitta (Bile)Inflammation, intense fire.
MercuryAll Three (Vata, Pitta, Kapha)The nervous system and communication.
JupiterKapha (Phlegm) + Vata (Wind)Growth, expansion, lymphatic system.
VenusVata (Wind) + Kapha (Phlegm)Vitality, reproduction, lubrication.
SaturnVata (Wind) + Pitta (Bile)Structure, coldness, vital currents.

3. Mental Health and "Unmada" (Lunacy)

Prasna Marga, Chapter XII, Stanzas 31–49

Vedic astrology provides 8 specific combinations for Unmada (mental derangement). These occur when the mind (Moon/Mercury) is severely afflicted by the "planets of force" (Mars/Saturn):

  • Jupiter in Lagna + Mars/Saturn in the 7th.
  • Saturn in Lagna + Mars in the 5th, 7th, or 9th.
  • Weak Moon + Saturn in the 12th house.

The Symptoms of the Mind

The text beautifully describes the "behavioural diagnostics" of mental illness:

Vata Madness: Laughing, singing, dancing, or wailing at wrong moments. Body becomes emaciated and copper-coloured.
Pitta Madness: Extreme anger, rushing about, shower of abuses, thirst, and avoidance of heat.

4. Understanding Epilepsy (Apasmara)

Prasna Marga, Chapter XII, Stanzas 50–52

The condition of Apasmara occurs when specific malefic triggers hit the 8th and 12th houses simultaneously:

The Trigger: Saturn in the 8th house, Sun & Mars in the 12th house, and powerful malefics in the trines (5th/9th).

The text lists 12 forms of epilepsy, characterized by sudden fainting, rolling of the eyes, and rolling on the ground.

5. The Alchemy of Healing: The 6 Tastes

Prasna Marga, Chapter XII, Stanzas 27–28

Astrology provides the diagnosis, but Ayurveda provides the diet. The text links the three humours to the six tastes (Rasas). By adjusting your diet to include specific tastes, you can rebalance the planetary energy:

Dosha Afflicted Healing Tastes Tastes to Avoid
Vata (Air)Sweet, Sour, SaltBitter, Hot, Kashaya
Pitta (Fire)Sweet, Bitter, KashayaSour, Salt, Hot
Kapha (Water)Bitter, Hot, KashayaSweet, Sour, Salt

Key Takeaways from Chapter 12

  • Planetary Dusthas: A planet becomes a *Dustha* (disease-causer) in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house.
  • Diagnostic Precision: The 8th house governs the body, the 5th governs the mind, and the 6th governs external trauma.
  • The Humour Scale: Every illness is ultimately an imbalance of Vata, Pitta, or Kapha, mapped to specific planets.
  • Psychic Health: The ancient system recognized mental illness (*Unmada*) as a serious condition with specific planetary markers.
  • Holistic Remedies: Healing involves both the technical (medicine/diet) and the spiritual (Japa/Homa/Atonement).
