⚠️ CRITICAL CONTENT WARNING: POLITICAL ASSASSINATION & VIOLENCE ⚠️
This article analyzes the horoscope of Nathuram Vinayak Godse (1910-1949), the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi. On January 30, 1948, Godse shot and killed Gandhi at a prayer meeting in Delhi, committing one of the 20th century's most shocking political assassinations. Godse was convicted and executed by hanging on November 15, 1949.
ABSOLUTELY CLEAR STATEMENTS:
- Gandhi's assassination was a heinous crime. Mahatma Gandhi was a global icon of non-violence (ahimsa), peace, and moral leadership who led India to independence. His murder robbed India and the world of one of history's greatest humanitarians.
- This analysis does NOT justify, excuse, or sympathize with assassination. Political violence is morally reprehensible and legally inexcusable regardless of ideological differences.
- Godse's political views are NOT endorsed here. His motivations (Hindu nationalism, opposition to partition, anger over Gandhi's Muslim policies) are mentioned only for historical context, not approval.
- This is forensic astrological education ONLY. We study this chart to understand how extreme malefic planetary combinations correlate with violent criminal behavior, fanaticism, and "inversion of better qualities" (Raman's phrase).
- Astrology does NOT remove moral responsibility. Chart afflictions may indicate tendencies, but humans have free will and moral agency. Godse chose violence; countless others with difficult charts choose peace.
WHY INCLUDE THIS ARTICLE?
B.V. Raman (1912-1998), India's most respected 20th-century astrologer, included this chart in Notable Horoscopes (1957) with the preface: "Just as a doctor is concerned with an objective diagnosis of the case he handles, similarly an astrologer must analyse the horoscope objectively and with detachment." Medical students study disease to prevent it; astrology students study afflicted charts to recognize warning patterns. This is forensic astrology—not endorsement.
READER DISCRETION STRONGLY ADVISED. If discussions of assassination, violence, death penalty, or ideological radicalization are distressing to you, please skip this article. Many other Notable Horoscopes articles demonstrate chart interpretation without controversial subjects.
TO GANDHI'S MEMORY: This analysis focuses on the perpetrator's chart to teach forensic astrology. For Gandhi's inspiring horoscope demonstrating Hamsa Yoga, Moon-Jupiter-Mercury brilliance, and spiritual mastery, see: Gandhi's Complete Horoscope Analysis.
Historical Context: The Assassination that Shocked the World
Nathuram Vinayak Godse was born May 19, 1910, in Baramati, Maharashtra (then British India) into a Chitpavan Brahmin family. His early life was marked by Hindu nationalist influences through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later the Hindu Mahasabha, radical organizations advocating Hindu supremacy in India's politics.
Godse became increasingly radicalized during the tumultuous 1940s as India moved toward independence and the traumatic Partition into India and Pakistan. He viewed Mahatma Gandhi as excessively sympathetic to Muslims, particularly resenting Gandhi's pressure on the Indian government to pay financial assets to Pakistan and his advocacy for Muslim safety during the communal violence of Partition. Godse interpreted Gandhi's ahimsa (non-violence) and religious pluralism as weakness and betrayal of Hindu interests.
The Assassination: On January 30, 1948, at 5:17 PM, during Gandhi's evening prayer meeting at Birla House in New Delhi, Godse approached Gandhi, bowed, then fired three shots from a Beretta pistol at point-blank range. Gandhi's last words were reportedly "Hey Ram" (Oh God). The 78-year-old leader died within minutes. The murder sent shockwaves across India and the world—millions mourned the loss of the man who had championed non-violence and led India's peaceful struggle for independence.
Trial and Execution: Godse was immediately apprehended (he made no attempt to flee). At his trial, he delivered a lengthy statement justifying his actions on ideological grounds, claiming he killed Gandhi to "save" Hinduism. The court rejected his arguments—political assassination is murder regardless of motive. Godse was convicted and sentenced to death. He was hanged at Ambala Central Jail on November 15, 1949, at age 39.
This horoscope presents an extreme case study in malefic concentrations. While most charts with Mars-Saturn afflictions produce engineers, surgeons, or athletes (channeling Mars-Saturn intensity constructively), this chart demonstrates what happens when THREE first-rate malefics (Rahu-Mars-Saturn) simultaneously afflict BOTH Lagna and Lagna lord, combined with eclipsed Atmakaraka Sun. Raman calls this a "rupture between mind and spirit"—the rational mind disconnected from moral conscience, allowing "consummate cunning" to plan violence.

House Occupations
| House | Sign | Planets | Significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st (Lagna) | Gemini | Mars (exact conjunction with Lagna) | Personality: aggressive, contemptuous of danger, quick to anger |
| 4th | Virgo | Moon, Jupiter (debilitated) | Mind: Jupiter-Moon normally good, but neutralized by debilitation + malefic aspects |
| 10th | Pisces | Venus (exalted) | Karma/Actions: Suggests "good motives" but Venus in Mercury's nakshatra (Mercury afflicted) = perverse vision |
| 12th | Taurus | Sun, Mercury (R), Rahu | Loss/Imprisonment: Lagna lord Mercury here = eventual incarceration + hanging |
| 6th | Scorpio | Ketu | Enemies/Crime: Mars (6th lord) in Lagna, aspected by Saturn (8th lord) |
| 11th | Aries | Saturn (debilitated) | Saturn lord of 8th and 9th, debilitated, aspects Mars in Lagna |
Raman emphasizes: "Mars is in the constellation of Rahu" (Ardra nakshatra, ruled by Rahu). This is CRUCIAL. Mars already afflicts Lagna by conjunction, but the affliction is AMPLIFIED because Mars is expressing Rahu's chaotic, explosive, taboo-breaking energy. Mars in Rahu's nakshatra = violence that breaks all social norms.
Similarly, Venus (exalted in 10th, suggesting "good motives") is in Mercury's constellation (Revati is ruled by Mercury). Since Mercury is heavily afflicted (with Rahu, retrograde, Papakarthari), Venus's exaltation doesn't produce ethical action—it produces action driven by afflicted mental processes. Raman: "The native was impulsive, erratic, reckless and visionary."
Lesson: Always check nakshatra lords. A planet may look good by sign placement, but if its NAKSHATRA lord is afflicted, the results become distorted.
Special Features: Malefic Concentrations and Criminal Proclivities
B.V. Raman begins his analysis with a rare acknowledgment of the chart's extreme nature: "Just as a doctor is concerned with an objective diagnosis of the case he handles, similarly an astrologer must analyse the horoscope objectively and with detachment. Here is the horoscope of a person who committed the most brutal and inhuman crime of killing Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest embodiment of ahimsa."
1. Lagna Analysis: Mars in Exact Conjunction with Gemini Ascendant
Lagna at Gemini 19°16', Mars at Gemini 19°16': This is an EXACT conjunction—not just same sign, but same degree-minute. Mars (warrior, violence, weapons, aggression) is literally FUSED with the Lagna (self, body, personality). Raman's interpretation:
"The Lagna being Gemini is in exact conjunction with Mars who is in the constellation of Rahu. Saturn aspects Mars in Lagna. These combinations indicate restlessness, a nature contemptuous of danger and quick to anger."
Mars in Lagna is common in athletes, soldiers, surgeons—professions requiring courage, decisiveness, physical action. But THREE factors make this Mars dangerous:
- Mars in Rahu's nakshatra (Ardra): Amplifies Mars's destructive potential with Rahu's norm-breaking chaos
- Saturn's aspect from 11th house: Saturn (debilitated in Aries) aspects Mars, adding cruelty, coldness, calculated brutality
- Mars rules 6th house: As lord of Scorpio (6th house of enemies, crime, violence), Mars brings 6th house energy (hostility, conflict) directly into personality
• Constructive Mars in Lagna (examples from Notable Horoscopes): Surgeon's precision, athlete's courage, engineer's drive, soldier's bravery. Mars gives physical vitality, competitive spirit, leadership.
• Destructive Mars in Lagna (this chart): When Mars is (1) in malefic nakshatra, (2) aspected by malefics, (3) connected to 6th/8th houses, and (4) the Lagna LORD is also afflicted, Mars becomes violence-prone. "Contemptuous of danger" = reckless disregard for consequences (he made no attempt to flee after shooting Gandhi).
Key Principle: Mars ALONE in Lagna is manageable. But Mars + Rahu's nakshatra + Saturn's aspect + afflicted Lagna lord = forensic red flag.
2. Lagna Lord Mercury: Triple Affliction Creating Mental Distortion
Mercury retrograde at Taurus 15°39', 12th house, with Sun and Rahu: Mercury rules the mind (buddhi), communication, and intelligence. As Lagna lord, Mercury represents the SELF. Its condition determines mental health, moral reasoning, decision-making. Here Mercury suffers THREE severe afflictions:
Affliction #1: Conjunction with Rahu (Eclipse)
Raman states: "Lagna lord Mercury is with Rahu and the Sun. This again tends to express an ungrateful, quarrelsome, revengeful, overbearing and selfish nature with scant regard for the rights and feelings of others."
Mercury-Rahu conjunction = intelligence distorted by obsession, cunning without conscience, cleverness used for manipulation. Rahu amplifies Mercury's analytical ability but removes ethical constraints. The person becomes intellectually sharp but morally blind.
Affliction #2: Conjunction with Sun (Combustion)
Sun at 6°41' Taurus, Mercury at 15°39' Taurus = approximately 9° separation. While not in extreme combustion range, this is close enough for the Sun (ego, authority) to overpower Mercury (reason). The ego dominates intellect—"I am right because I believe I'm right" rather than rational deliberation.
Affliction #3: Papakarthari Yoga (Hemmed by Malefics)
Raman emphasizes: "Mercury the lord of Lagna and the indicator of the mind is subject to Papakarthari Yoga." Mercury in 12th house (Taurus) is hemmed between:
- 11th house: Saturn (debilitated malefic)
- 1st house: Mars (malefic in Rahu's nakshatra)
Papakarthari Yoga = "hemmed by scissors" = psychological claustrophobia, mental pressure, feeling trapped, leading to extreme actions to "break free."
"As the Sun, Atmakaraka, is also similarly afflicted, it indicates a rupture between the mind and the spirit: with the result the cunning and craftiness of the mind exerted themselves to take charge of the lower personality and therefore he must have gone about for years plotting and scheming with such consummate cunning that no one could have suspected his diabolical plot which brought the death of India's greatest man of this age."
This is profound astro-psychology: The MIND (Mercury) and the SOUL (Atmakaraka Sun) are both eclipsed by Rahu, severing their connection. Normally, the soul provides moral direction to the mind. But when both are afflicted, the mind operates WITHOUT spiritual guidance, becoming purely calculating and self-serving. The person can plan complex actions (Mercury intelligence intact) but has NO moral compass to evaluate those actions.
3. Atmakaraka Sun Eclipsed: Inversion of Higher Qualities
Sun at Taurus 6°41' with Rahu at 7°17' = within 1° conjunction: This is an EXACT eclipse. The Atmakaraka (the planet with the highest longitude, representing the soul's purpose) is Sun—indicating a soul purpose related to leadership, authority, dharma. But Sun conjunct Rahu = eclipse = inversion.
Raman notes: "Atmakaraka Sun, in exact conjunction with Rahu and thus eclipsed, is in the 9th from the Moon ruling the mind. This disposition inclined the native to inversion of the better qualities due to the Moon-Jupiter association in the 4th house, resulting in lack of conscience, indecency, disrespect for law and criminal proclivities."
Translation: The chart has GOOD features (Moon-Jupiter in 4th = kind heart, religious mind). But the eclipsed Atmakaraka INVERTS these qualities:
- Religious mind (Jupiter-Moon) becomes religious fanaticism (belief in "saving Hinduism" through murder)
- Leadership (Sun) becomes self-appointed vigilantism (taking law into own hands)
- Courage (Mars in Lagna) becomes violence (shooting unarmed 78-year-old man)
This is a CRITICAL concept in forensic astrology. Charts of criminals, tyrants, and terrorists often show STRONG yogas—but afflicted:
• Hitler had Ruchaka Yoga (Mars exalted), but Mars aspected by debilitated Saturn = warfare ending in suicide
• Mussolini had Asura Yoga (Jupiter-Venus in 8th) = tyrant taking pleasure in others' sufferings
• Godse has Moon-Jupiter in 4th (normally kind heart), but Jupiter debilitated + aspected by Mars in Rahu's nakshatra = religious fanaticism
The pattern: Good planetary energies + severe afflictions = inversion. The person has power/intelligence/conviction, but it manifests NEGATIVELY because guiding planets (Lagna lord, Atmakaraka) are corrupted.
Contrast: Gandhi's chart (see related article) ALSO has strong Mars (courage), but Mars is well-placed with benefic aspects, and Jupiter-Mercury-Moon form brilliant Hamsa Yoga. Same planetary energies, opposite manifestation based on afflictions.
4. Jupiter Debilitated: Neutralization of Wisdom
Jupiter at Virgo 13°44' (debilitated) in 4th house with Moon: Normally Jupiter-Moon conjunction (Gajakesari Yoga) in a kendra is highly auspicious—wisdom, good character, respect, prosperity. But Raman identifies TWO neutralizing factors:
"It will be seen that the 4th and 10th are occupied by two first-rate benefics. But Jupiter's beneficent effects are neutralised by his being Kendradhipati (lord of kendra losing beneficence) and by his being aspected by the 6th and 11th lord Mars, whose affliction is further augmented by his situation in Rahu's constellation."
Jupiter rules 7th (kendra from Gemini Lagna) and 10th (another kendra). There's a classical principle: "Kendradhipati Dosha"—benefics ruling kendras lose their full beneficence. Additionally, Jupiter receives Mars's 8th house aspect (Gemini to Virgo = 4th/8th relationship). Mars in Rahu's nakshatra aspects debilitated Jupiter = wisdom corrupted by fanaticism.
Gajakesari Yoga (Jupiter-Moon conjunction/mutual aspects from kendras) is one of Vedic astrology's most famous "good" yogas—wealth, intelligence, fame, virtue. But it FAILS when:
1. Jupiter debilitated (as here in Virgo)
2. Jupiter aspected by malefics (Mars here)
3. Jupiter ruling dusthanas (6th/8th/12th)—not applicable here, but common failure mode
4. Moon afflicted (here Moon is with debilitated Jupiter, weakening both)
Result in this chart: The Gajakesari Yoga EXISTS (Jupiter-Moon in 4th kendra), but produces minimal good results. The person has religious interests (Jupiter-Moon), but Jupiter's debilitation + Mars's aspect = religious extremism rather than genuine wisdom. This is "Gajakesari failure"—the name is there, the benefits are not.
5. Venus Exalted in 10th: The Paradox of "Good Motives"
Venus exalted at Pisces 21°42' in 10th house: Venus is the ONLY well-placed planet in this chart—exalted, in a kendra, ruling 5th and 12th houses. Exalted Venus in 10th typically indicates ethical career, artistic success, good reputation. How does this fit Godse's criminality?
Raman addresses this apparent contradiction: "It may be argued that exaltation of Venus in the 10th might suggest that in resorting to this dastardly crime, his motives, though perverse, might have been good."
Godse genuinely believed he was SAVING Hinduism and India by killing Gandhi. In his own mind, his motive was noble (Venus exalted = "good intentions"). But Raman continues:
"But the fact that Venus himself is in the constellation of Mercury, the ruler of the mind, who in his turn is violently afflicted, clearly brings to light that the native was impulsive, erratic, reckless and visionary."
Venus in Revati nakshatra (ruled by Mercury). Mercury is retrograde, with Rahu, in Papakarthari Yoga = afflicted mind. Therefore Venus's "good intentions" are DIRECTED by an afflicted mind, producing perverted actions. He had convictions (Venus exalted), but his mental process was corrupted (Mercury afflicted), so his convictions led to murder rather than service.
This is perhaps the most chilling astrological lesson from this chart. Many violent extremists—religious terrorists, political assassins, ideological fanatics—genuinely believe they're doing GOOD. Venus exalted in 10th = sincere conviction. But when the MIND (Mercury) is corrupted by Rahu, those convictions become deadly.
Compare:
• Gandhi: Also had strong convictions (exalted Sun, strong Jupiter), but Mercury-Jupiter-Moon formed Hamsa Yoga = wisdom guiding conviction = non-violent resistance
• Godse: Had strong convictions (exalted Venus), but Mercury-Rahu + Papakarthari = distorted thinking guiding conviction = violent assassination
Lesson: Conviction without wisdom is dangerous. Check the condition of Mercury and Jupiter before assessing the VALUE of strong 9th/10th house placements.
6. Saturn in 11th: Death by Hanging Indicated
Saturn debilitated at Aries 9°4' in 11th house: Saturn rules 8th house (death, longevity) and 9th house (dharma, father, fortune). Being debilitated in Aries (enemy sign) and aspecting Mars in Lagna creates a deadly Mars-Saturn mutual connection:
- Mars (6th lord) in Lagna: Crime, enemies, violence
- Saturn (8th lord) aspects Mars: Death through violence/crime
- Saturn in Ayudha Drekkana: Raman notes that Saturn occupies "Ayudha Drekkana" (weapons third of sign) indicating "death by hanging"
Raman explains: "Note Mars as lord of the 6th and Saturn as lord of the 8th both afflicting Lagna point out the direction of his destiny—incarceration and death by hanging."
Classical texts list specific combinations for execution/hanging:
1. 8th lord in Ayudha Drekkana (10°-20° of Aries/Cancer/Libra/Capricorn) = death by weapons/violence
2. 6th and 8th lords afflicting Lagna = incarceration + capital punishment
3. Saturn-Mars mutual affliction = violent death, especially if involving 8th house
4. 3rd house from Atmakaraka occupied by Sun = Jaimini dictum: "death due to political offences"
In this chart, ALL FOUR indicators are present. Raman, writing in 1957 (8 years after Godse's execution), had the benefit of hindsight, but these are legitimate classical predictive techniques, not retrofitting.
Important Events: Jupiter Dasa, Saturn Bhukti—Murder and Execution
Vimshottari Dasa Sequence
At birth (May 19, 1910): Moon Dasa balance = 9 years, 5 months, 16 days
| Dasa Period | Age Range | Major Events | Astrological Analysis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moon Dasa | Birth - Age 9 | Childhood in Baramati, Maharashtra. Family life in Chitpavan Brahmin household. | Moon in 4th with Jupiter normally indicates happy childhood, but Jupiter debilitated + aspected by Mars = early exposure to ideological rigidity. |
| Mars Dasa | Age 9-16 (1919-1926) | Adolescence. Mars Dasa activates Mars in Lagna—physical growth, aggression, restlessness. Early exposure to RSS ideology likely during this period. | Mars in Lagna in Rahu's nakshatra aspected by Saturn = teenage years marked by anger, rebelliousness, attraction to militant ideology. Mars rules 6th (enemies, conflict). |
| Rahu Dasa | Age 16-34 (1926-1944) | Joined RSS (Hindu nationalist organization). Became increasingly radicalized. Worked as tailor, editor of Marathi newspaper. Never married. Deep involvement in Hindu Mahasabha politics. | Rahu in 12th with Sun (Atmakaraka) and Mercury (Lagna lord) = 18-year period of obsession, ideological extremism, isolation. Rahu's long Dasa allowed fanaticism to ferment. Mercury-Rahu = clever propaganda writing (newspaper editor). |
| Jupiter Dasa (1944-1960 projected) |
Age 34-50 (cut short at 39) |
Jupiter-Saturn Bhukti (1947-1949): • January 30, 1948: Assassinated Gandhi (age 37) • Arrested immediately • Trial in 1948-49 • November 15, 1949: Executed by hanging (age 39) |
Jupiter Dasa: Jupiter debilitated in 4th, rules 7th (maraka) and 10th (karma/actions). Dasa of yoga-neutralized planet = promised benefits don't manifest. Saturn Bhukti: Saturn rules 8th (death) and 9th (dharma inverted here). Saturn-Jupiter in dwirdwadasa (6-8 relationship) in Navamsa = mutually destructive. Both are marakas (death-inflicting planets). |
The Assassination: Jupiter Dasa, Saturn Bhukti (January 30, 1948)
Godse murdered Gandhi on January 30, 1948, during Jupiter Maha Dasa, Saturn Antar Dasa. Raman explains the maraka (death-inflicting) significance:
"He committed the dastardly act of murdering Gandhi in Saturn Bhukti of Jupiter Dasa. He was hanged under the same directional influences. It will be seen that Jupiter is a definite maraka both from Lagna and the Moon while Saturn is in the 8th from Lagna as well as Dasanatha in Rasi while they are in dwirdwadasa in Navamsa occupying the 2nd and 3rd respectively from Chandra Lagna."
Breaking down this complex statement:
Jupiter as Maraka (Death-Inflicting Planet)
- From Lagna (Gemini): Jupiter rules 7th house (maraka sthana—2nd from 6th) and 10th house
- From Moon (Virgo): Jupiter occupies 4th house but rules 7th house (Pisces—maraka sthana)
- Jupiter is "Dasanatha" = lord of the Maha Dasa operating = his period MUST give results
Saturn as Secondary Maraka
- Saturn in 8th from Lagna: Wait, Saturn is in 11th from Lagna (Aries), not 8th. But Raman says "Saturn is in 8th from Lagna"—possibly referring to Bhava (house) vs. Rasi (sign) distinction, or perhaps Saturn aspects 8th house. Saturn RULES 8th house (Capricorn from Gemini Lagna).
- Saturn rules 8th house: Lord of longevity, death
- Bhukti lord: Saturn's sub-period within Jupiter Dasa = Saturn MUST give results
Jupiter-Saturn Dwirdwadasa (6-8 Relationship) in Navamsa
In Navamsa (D-9 chart), Jupiter and Saturn are in 2nd and 3rd houses from Moon (Chandra Lagna), creating a 6-8 relationship (dwirdwadasa) between them. Planets in 6-8 relationship are mutually destructive—they fight each other. When Jupiter Dasa, Saturn Bhukti operates, and these planets are dwirdwadasa in Navamsa, BOTH suffer = catastrophic results for the native.
The maraka (death-inflicting) system is one of Vedic astrology's most reliable timing techniques for predicting longevity/death. Marakas include:
1. Lords of 2nd and 7th houses (maraka sthanas = "killer houses")
2. Planets occupying 2nd and 7th
3. Lord of 8th house (longevity/death house)
4. Planets aspecting/afflicting 8th lord
In this chart:
• Jupiter rules 7th (maraka) from Lagna → primary maraka
• Saturn rules 8th (death house) → secondary maraka
• Jupiter-Saturn in dwirdwadasa in Navamsa → mutually destructive
Result: Jupiter Dasa, Saturn Bhukti = period when BOTH marakas operate simultaneously = extremely dangerous for life. Godse committed murder (action requiring courage = Mars activation) and was executed (Saturn = hanging) during this deadly combination.
Moral dimension: The SAME maraka Dasa that caused his death ALSO caused him to COMMIT murder during its period. Jupiter-Saturn malefic combination = destruction of BOTH self and others.
Jaimini Dictum: Death Due to Political Offences
Raman references an advanced technique from Jaimini system: "According to Jaimini, when the 3rd house from Atmakaraka (here Venus) is occupied by the Sun, death will be due to political offences."
Atmakaraka is Venus (highest longitude at 351°42'). Counting 3 houses from Pisces (Venus's sign):
- Pisces (Venus)
- Aries (2nd house)
- Taurus (3rd house from Atmakaraka) = contains SUN
Sun = government, authority, politics. 3rd house from Atmakaraka = manner of death. Sun here = death connected to political actions. This is an incredibly specific prediction—not just violent death, but specifically execution for POLITICAL crime (assassination of political/spiritual leader).
Jaimini's Atmakaraka system (from Jaimini Sutras, ancient astrological text) uses the planet with HIGHEST longitude as soul indicator (Atmakaraka). The 3rd house FROM Atmakaraka indicates manner of death:
• Sun: Death due to government/political causes, execution, heart attack
• Moon: Water-related death, drowning, chest diseases
• Mars: Violent death, accidents, weapons, warfare
• Mercury: Nervous disorders, speech issues, poisoning
• Jupiter: Natural death, liver disease, philosophical peace
• Venus: Sexual diseases, kidney failure, artistic pursuits
• Saturn: Slow death, chronic disease, suffocation, loneliness
In Godse's chart: Atmakaraka Venus → 3rd house = Taurus with Sun → death due to POLITICAL offense. Verified: executed for assassinating political/spiritual leader.
Remarks: Lessons in Forensic Astrology and Moral Responsibility
B.V. Raman concludes his analysis with a sobering reflection on the astrologer's duty of objectivity and the chart's instructional value for students:
"Astrological students must mark the concentration of the influences of the worst malefics, viz., Rahu, Saturn and Mars, both on Lagna and Lagna lord, both in the Rasi and the Navamsa. Deeds, which offend public opinion, or meet with Punishment at the hands of the State are generally the indications of misdirected energy shown in the horoscope by Rahu, Saturn and Mars not only by their mutual adverse relationships but also in the affliction they cause to Lagna and Lagna lord as lords of the 6th and 8th."
Key Astrological Lessons from This Chart
1. Triple Malefic Concentration on Lagna/Lagna Lord
This chart's defining feature is the SIMULTANEOUS affliction of BOTH Lagna (ascendant) and Lagna lord (Mercury) by ALL THREE major natural malefics:
- Rahu: With Mercury (Lagna lord) in 12th house, eclipsing Atmakaraka Sun
- Mars: Exactly conjunct Lagna, in Rahu's nakshatra, rules 6th house
- Saturn: Debilitated in 11th, aspects Mars in Lagna, rules 8th house
When Lagna is afflicted but Lagna lord is strong, the person has internal resilience despite external challenges. When Lagna lord is afflicted but Lagna is strong, the person has good circumstances despite internal struggles. But when BOTH are afflicted by ALL THREE malefics, there is no escape valve—the personality is comprehensively damaged.
2. The "Rupture Between Mind and Spirit"
Raman's phrase "rupture between mind and spirit" describes the psychological profile of an extremist:
- Mind (Mercury): With Rahu, retrograde, Papakarthari = distorted thinking, obsessive logic, moral blindness
- Spirit (Atmakaraka Sun): Eclipsed by Rahu = soul's purpose inverted, ego inflated, disconnected from conscience
The mind and spirit normally work together—the mind analyzes, the spirit provides moral direction. But when BOTH are afflicted, the mind becomes a weapon without a safety mechanism. The person can plan complex actions (Godse plotted for years, acquired weapon, waited for opportunity) but has NO internal voice questioning the morality of those actions.
3. Inversion of Better Qualities
The chart contains some good features:
- Jupiter-Moon in 4th = kind heart (inverted to fanaticism)
- Venus exalted in 10th = good intentions (inverted to perverted conviction)
- Mars in Lagna = courage (inverted to reckless violence)
But the afflicted Lagna lord and Atmakaraka cause these positive traits to manifest negatively. This is the "inversion principle"—strong planetary energies still exist, but their expression is reversed. Kindness becomes cruelty "for the greater good," courage becomes violence, conviction becomes fanaticism.
4. Predictive Accuracy: Death by Hanging
The chart predicted with multiple redundant indicators:
- Mars (6th lord) + Saturn (8th lord) afflicting Lagna = incarceration + death
- Saturn in Ayudha Drekkana = death by hanging/weapons
- Jupiter-Saturn dwirdwadasa in Navamsa = mutual destruction
- 3rd from Atmakaraka occupied by Sun = death due to political offenses
ALL predictions verified: Godse was incarcerated immediately after the assassination, tried for political murder, and hanged on November 15, 1949, during the SAME Jupiter Dasa, Saturn Bhukti that saw him commit the crime.
This chart raises astrology's most difficult philosophical question: If the horoscope predicted criminal behavior and death by hanging, did Godse have free will? Several perspectives:
1. Deterministic View: The chart's afflictions made violence inevitable. Godse was a "karmic instrument" destined to play this role in Gandhi's life/death.
2. Probabilistic View: The chart indicated TENDENCIES toward violence, fanaticism, recklessness, but Godse CHOSE how to express those energies. Countless others with difficult charts choose service, reform, or spiritual discipline rather than violence.
3. Remedial View: Had Godse studied his chart with a competent astrologer, he might have been warned of malefic periods and advised spiritual practices (meditation, service, mantras) to sublimate destructive energies.
4. Moral Responsibility View: Regardless of astrological indications, humans are morally responsible for their actions. Courts rightfully convicted Godse of murder—astrology may explain, but never excuses.
Vedic philosophy's answer: BOTH exist. Karma (chart) provides the FIELD of possibilities. Free will (iccha shakti) determines which possibility manifests. Godse had Mars energy (courage)—he could have used it constructively (soldier, surgeon, activist) or destructively (assassin). He chose destruction.

- Compare Jupiter-Moon conjunction in this chart with the same combination in spiritual leaders' charts (Buddha, Ramakrishna). Why does Gajakesari Yoga fail here?
- Venus is exalted in 10th house, typically indicating ethical career and good reputation. Why did this NOT manifest positively? Use nakshatra analysis in your answer.
- Calculate the dwirdwadasa (6-8) relationship between Jupiter and Saturn in Navamsa chart. Why is this significant for death timing?
- Identify ALL maraka indicators in this chart (from both Lagna and Moon). Which Dasa-Bhukti combination would be most dangerous?
- What does Raman mean by "rupture between mind and spirit"? Identify the specific planetary afflictions that create this psychological condition.
Advanced Level (Predictive and Philosophical)
- Predictive Exercise: Using ONLY the birth chart (without knowing historical events), predict: (a) personality traits, (b) mental stability, (c) career tendencies, (d) longevity risks. Compare your predictions with actual events.
- Remedial Analysis: If Godse had consulted you as an astrologer at age 20 (during Rahu Dasa), what remedies would you have prescribed to sublimate Mars-Rahu-Saturn energies constructively? Be specific (mantras, gemstones, lifestyle advice, spiritual practices).
- Comparative Study: Compare this chart with Adolf Hitler's horoscope (also in Notable Horoscopes series). Identify three common patterns in charts of violent political actors.
- Jaimini Technique: Apply the Jaimini dictum: "3rd house from Atmakaraka indicates manner of death." Verify this in THREE other Notable Horoscopes charts and assess the technique's reliability.
- Ethical Question: If you were Godse's astrologer in 1947 and saw Jupiter Dasa, Saturn Bhukti approaching (1947-1949), would you: (a) Warn him of extreme danger to self/others? (b) Remain silent (client privacy)? (c) Report concerns to authorities? Defend your choice using both astrological ethics and modern legal/moral frameworks.
Forensic Astrology Research Project
Advanced students: Research 5-10 charts of political assassins, terrorists, or violent criminals (Charles Manson, Lee Harvey Oswald, Timothy McVeigh, etc.). Identify common astrological patterns:
- Lagna/Lagna lord afflictions
- Mars-Saturn-Rahu relationships
- Atmakaraka/Amatyakaraka conditions
- 6th-8th-12th house emphasis
- Dasa periods during violent acts
Create a "forensic astrology risk profile" checklist. Can astrology reliably identify violent tendencies? What are the ethical implications of such predictions?
Closing Reminder: Educational Purpose Only
This analysis was conducted for astrological education—teaching students to recognize malefic patterns, understand chart afflictions, and predict life events. It is NOT an endorsement, justification, or sympathetic treatment of assassination or political violence.
To honor Gandhi's legacy: If this article has educational value for you, consider donating to non-violence organizations, studying conflict resolution, or practicing ahimsa (non-violence) in your own life. Gandhi's message—that ends do NOT justify violent means—remains eternally relevant.
