King George VI

Three Panchamahapurusha Yogas and the Astrology of Unexpected Kingship

Introduction: The Reluctant King Who Saved an Empire

King George VI (1895-1952) never expected to rule. Born as Prince Albert, Duke of York, he was second son to King George V, living in the shadow of his charismatic elder brother Edward (later Edward VIII). When Edward abdicated the throne in December 1936 to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson, Albert—shy, stuttering, unprepared—suddenly became King George VI at age 40. Yet this reluctant monarch led Britain through its darkest hour: World War II, the Blitz, the existential threat of Nazi conquest.

His horoscope reveals one of the most extraordinary planetary configurations in B.V. Raman's entire collection: THREE Panchamahapurusha yogas simultaneously —Hamsa Yoga (Jupiter exalted in 10th), Sasa Yoga (Saturn exalted in Lagna), and Malavya Yoga (Venus in own sign in Lagna). These rare combinations, each promising royalty individually, combined to create a chart "highly fortunate" and "unique." Add to this two additional powerful Raja yogas, and the astrological foundation for inheriting an empire becomes clear.

Raman analyzes this chart to demonstrate how multiple Panchamahapurusha yogas interact , why George inherited the throne from his brother rather than father (astrological signatures differ from normal succession), and how these yogas sustained him through "abnormal difficulties" when Hitler controlled most of Europe. The chart also shows the peaceful liquidation of the British Empire (India's independence 1947), victory against impossible odds, and the transformation of monarchy from absolute power to constitutional symbol.

Why This Chart Matters: George VI's horoscope is THE definitive case study for multiple Panchamahapurusha yogas operating simultaneously. Students often study these yogas individually (Hamsa = Jupiter exalted in kendra, Sasa = Saturn exalted in kendra, etc.), but rarely see all THREE in one chart. This teaches: (1) How to analyze OVERLAPPING yogas—do they strengthen each other or compete? (2) Why multiple yogas don't simply "add up" but create COMPLEX results (king during empire's dissolution, not expansion). (3) How Panchamahapurusha yogas manifest differently based on OTHER chart factors (debilitated Moon, Mars-Mercury conjunction, etc.). Essential for advanced yoga interpretation.

First Impression - The Triple Yoga Structure: Before detailed analysis, notice the stunning Lagna structure: Venus within 7° of Lagna degree (7°3'), Saturn exalted at 23°49' —both in Libra. Meanwhile, Jupiter exalted in Cancer occupies 10th house . This configuration—two exalted planets (Saturn, Jupiter) + Venus in own sign, all in kendras—is extraordinarily rare. Each individually creates Panchamahapurusha yoga; together they create a chart of exceptional power. The 2nd house concentration (Sun-Moon-Mars-Mercury in Scorpio) adds intensity, secrecy, and determination to an otherwise refined Libra personality.

Special Features of the Horoscope

1. Libra Lagna with Venus Close to Ascendant: The Refined Monarch

Libra rising (Venus-ruled) with Venus within 7° creates the classic diplomatic, balanced, justice-oriented personality:

  • "Liberal tendencies, amiable, sympathetic, affectionate disposition": George VI was known for kindness, approachability (unlike his austere father)
  • "Refined, generous, just nature": Constitutional monarchy requires fairness, balance—Libra's essence
  • Venus as Lagna lord IN Lagna: Maximum strength for personality, appearance, vitality
  • Within 7° of Lagna degree: Venus's influence dominates first impressions, physical presence

Saturn with Venus in Lagna creates interesting duality:

  • "Saturn, planet of solitude": Withdrawn, introverted despite public role
  • "Pattern of life followed certain swing of habit": Routine-oriented, like his father George V (also had Saturnine influences)
  • "Strongly rooted in own existence, withdrawn from hurly-burly": Never sought limelight (contrast with Edward VIII's love of publicity)
  • "Devoted family-man": Saturn + Venus = responsibility TO family, not just FOR family

2. The Three Panchamahapurusha Yogas: A Unique Confluence

A. Hamsa Yoga: Jupiter Exalted in 10th House

Jupiter exalted in Cancer in 10th house creates perfect Hamsa Yoga :

Classical Hamsa Yoga Results:

  • "Virtuous, handsome, enjoying royal comforts": Constitutional monarch with wealth, respect
  • "Pure hearted, loved by all": George VI became beloved despite initial reluctance
  • "Royal marks on hands and feet": Born into royalty, literally marked for kingship
  • "Long-lived": Lived 56 years (not exceptionally long, but survived WWII stress)

Jupiter in 10th House Specific Effects:

  • 10th house = career, public role, kingdom
  • Jupiter exalted = MAXIMUM strength for 10th house matters
  • Jupiter as 3rd-6th lord for Libra Lagna = overcoming enemies (6th), courage in adversity (3rd)
  • "The situation of Jupiter in the 10th from the ascendant was no doubt the most sustaining factor which stood the native in good stead when Hitler was striking England at vital spots" (Raman)

B. Sasa Yoga: Saturn Exalted in Lagna

Saturn exalted in Libra in Lagna creates Sasa Yoga :

Classical Sasa Yoga Results:

  • "Commander of armies, king or equivalent": Supreme Commander of British Armed Forces
  • "Cruel to enemies, obstinate": Steadfast against Nazi threat despite bombings
  • "Wealth of quadrupeds": Royal stables, country estates
  • "Enjoys life till 70": Died at 56 (somewhat early, but intense life)

Saturn in Lagna as Yogakaraka:

  • For Libra Lagna, Saturn owns 4th (homeland, throne) and 5th (intellect, progeny)
  • 4th-5th lordship = trikona (5th) + kendra (4th) = yogakaraka (most beneficial planet)
  • Exalted yogakaraka in Lagna = maximum possible strength
  • "Saturn in the 10th from the Moon in Navamsa gives the King the right to perform his father's obsequies" (traditional royal duty)

C. Malavya Yoga: Venus in Own Sign in Lagna

Venus in Libra (own sign) in Lagna creates Malavya Yoga :

Classical Malavya Yoga Results:

  • "Handsome, strong-bodied, enjoys pleasures": Dignified appearance despite stammer
  • "Wealth, vehicles, happy family life": Married well (Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother), two daughters
  • "Lives to 70": Partially fulfilled (died 56)
  • "Philanthropic": Royal charities, patronage

Venus as Lagna Lord in Lagna:

  • Self-contained strength—Lagna lord occupying Lagna = strong personality foundation
  • Venus in Swati nakshatra (Rahu-ruled) adds independence, self-direction
  • "Venus has no doubt caused Malavya Yoga and his strength is par excellence, especially that he is Lagna lord"

"The horoscope has three important Raja Yogas, justifying the exalted position of the native. Jupiter's exaltation in the 10th from Lagna constitutes Hamsa Yoga. Saturn's exaltation in Lagna causes Sasa Yoga. The location of Venus in Lagna which he happens to own gives rise to Malavya Yoga. These Panchamahapurusha Yogas, having reference to the Lagna and the 10th, are indeed a unique feature rendering the horoscope highly fortunate."

3. Two Additional Powerful Raja Yogas

A. Mercury in Rasi Other Than Capricorn, Identical with Chandra Lagna

This technical yoga requires Mercury NOT in Capricorn AND occupying the same sign as Moon:

  • Mercury in Scorpio ✓ (not Capricorn)
  • Moon in Scorpio ✓ (same sign)
  • Creates Raja Yoga = power, authority
  • Shows intellectual alignment with emotions (Mercury = mind, Moon = emotions)

B. Lords of 2nd, 9th, 11th in Kendra from Moon

From Chandra Lagna (Moon in Scorpio):

  • 2nd lord: Jupiter (Sagittarius = 2nd from Scorpio) in Cancer = 9th from Moon ✗ (not kendra)
  • Actually this yoga requires careful recalculation—Raman may be using different reference points
  • The principle: wealth (2nd), fortune (9th), gains (11th) lords well-placed from Moon = prosperity through emotional/family connections

4. The Afflicted 2nd House: Four Planets in Scorpio

Sun-Moon-Mars-Mercury in Scorpio (2nd house) creates intense concentration:

Moon Debilitated with Malefics

Moon debilitated in Scorpio, associated with Mars (own sign), aspected by Jupiter:

  • Debilitated Moon: Emotional vulnerability, anxiety, health issues
  • "Not good for mental peace and health": George VI suffered nervous strain, stomach ulcers
  • "Liability of trouble to throat, speech, blood vessels": Famous stammer (speech impediment), required speech therapy
  • Jupiter's aspect: Mitigates worst effects, provides hope

Mercury-Mars-Sun Conjunction

Mercury with Mars and Sun:

  • "Rather critical at times": Sharp intellect, sometimes harsh judgments
  • "Liable to suffer from nervous strain": Stress-induced health problems, especially during WWII
  • Mars = aggression; Mercury = nerves; Sun = ego → internal tension

5. Brother Inherits Throne: The Astrological Signature

Raman notes: "The native got the kingdom not from his father but from his brother."

Astrological Indicators:

  • Sun (political power, "political planet") in 10th from Chandra Lagna: With Mars (Bhratrukaraka = brother indicator)
  • 10th lord Moon aspected by exalted Jupiter (3rd lord = siblings): Kingdom comes through 3rd house connection
  • Mars (brothers) in association with Sun (throne): Brother's action (abdication) gives throne

6. Gajakesari Yoga: Jupiter-Moon in Mutual Kendras

Jupiter in Cancer (10th), Moon in Scorpio (2nd) = 10th-2nd axis = mutual kendras:

  • Creates Gajakesari Yoga = fame, respect, authority
  • Though Moon is debilitated, Jupiter's exaltation compensates
  • Aspect between them creates mutual support despite Moon's weakness
Analyzing Multiple Panchamahapurusha Yogas: When chart contains multiple Panchamahapurusha yogas, examine:
  1. Which is strongest? (Jupiter exalted > Saturn exalted > Venus in own sign by degree/condition)
  2. Do they support each other? (Hamsa in 10th + Sasa in 1st = leadership + foundation = YES)
  3. Are there contradictions? (Saturn = solitude vs. Jupiter = social = some tension)
  4. Which manifests when? (Dasas determine timing—Jupiter Dasa = Hamsa active, Saturn Dasa = Sasa active)
  5. How do afflictions modify? (Debilitated Moon tempers yogas' promises)
Result is NOT simple "very powerful chart" but nuanced: POTENT (3 yogas) yet COMPLEX (debilitated Moon, Mars afflictions), creating reluctant king who succeeded despite not wanting throne.

August 15, 1947: India became independent— Venus Dasa, Rahu Bhukti

  • "Greater part of British Empire liquidated"
  • Rahu in 5th aspected by Mars (7th lord) = disintegration of empire
  • Rahu = sudden loss, foreign forces breaking away
  • George VI ceased being "Emperor of India," became "King" only

Death (1952): Venus Dasa, Saturn Bhukti

February 6, 1952 (Age 56): Died in sleep— Venus Dasa, Saturn Bhukti

  • Saturn = Ayushkaraka (longevity indicator), but also maraka when activated
  • Saturn aspects 7th house (maraka house)
  • From Chandra Lagna: Venus is maraka (7th lord from Scorpio = Taurus = Venus)
  • Venus joined with Saturn (both become marakas)
  • Lung cancer (heavy smoker), coronary thrombosis

"The King died in Saturn Dasa Venus Bhukti, as Ayushkaraka Saturn aspects the 7th, a maraka house. From Chandra Lagna, Venus is a maraka and he is joined by Saturn. Thus both Saturn and Venus have become powerful marakas."

Philosophical Remarks: The Burden of Unexpected Greatness

Three Panchamahapurusha Yogas: Synergy, Not Simple Addition

Having THREE Panchamahapurusha yogas doesn't mean "three times more powerful than one yoga." Instead:

Hamsa Yoga (Jupiter in 10th): Provided wisdom, dharmic leadership, sustaining power during crisis

Sasa Yoga (Saturn in Lagna): Provided endurance, discipline, ability to shoulder burdens

Malavya Yoga (Venus in Lagna): Provided refinement, diplomatic grace, family devotion

Together they created a king who was:

  • Wise enough to navigate constitutional monarchy (Hamsa)
  • Strong enough to endure WWII pressures (Sasa)
  • Refined enough to represent Britain gracefully (Malavya)

But ALSO:

  • Reluctant (Saturn's solitude vs. Jupiter's social role = internal conflict)
  • Anxious (debilitated Moon undermining yoga confidence)
  • Struggling (stammer, health issues from 2nd house afflictions)

The yogas promised greatness; the afflictions ensured it came through suffering, not ease.

Inheriting from Brother, Not Father: Rare Astrological Pattern

Normal succession = father dies → eldest son inherits. George VI's case = father dies → elder brother inherits → elder brother abdicates → younger son inherits.

Astrological Signature:

  • Sun (throne) with Mars (Bhratrukaraka = siblings) in 10th from Moon = brother's involvement in power
  • Jupiter (3rd lord = siblings) aspecting 10th lord Moon = sibling connection to throne
  • Ketu Dasa (unexpected, sudden changes) active during accession

This teaches: throne inheritance requires examining 9th house (father) AND 3rd house (siblings) —if 3rd house connects to 10th, succession may come through siblings, not direct father-to-son.

Empire Won, Empire Lost: The Jupiter-Rahu Dynamic

George VI's reign saw:

  • Victory: Defeated Nazi Germany (Venus Dasa, Mars Bhukti)
  • Loss: Lost British Empire (Venus Dasa, Rahu Bhukti)

Astrologically:

  • Jupiter in 10th: Preserved throne itself (Britain remained monarchy)
  • Rahu in 5th aspected by Mars (7th lord): Destroyed empire (colonies broke away)
  • Jupiter = dharma, righteousness (keeping throne morally defensible)
  • Rahu = foreign, disruption (colonies demanding independence)

The three Panchamahapurusha yogas ensured George VI remained KING, but couldn't prevent historical forces (Rahu) from dismantling empire. This is the limit of even the most powerful yogas—they can't stop collective karma, only individual destiny.

The Stammer: 2nd House Mercury-Mars Affliction

George VI's famous stammer (speech impediment) came from:

  • 2nd house = speech, voice
  • Mercury (communication) with Mars (sharp, cutting energy) = stammering, halting speech
  • Moon debilitated in 2nd = emotional anxiety affecting voice
  • "Trouble to throat, speech" explicitly predicted by Raman

Despite THREE Panchamahapurusha yogas promising excellence, this one affliction created lifelong challenge. Shows that even powerful charts have specific vulnerabilities—yogas elevate OVERALL life but don't erase SPECIFIC afflictions.

Historical Note: The 2010 film "The King's Speech" dramatized George VI's struggle with stammering and his relationship with speech therapist Lionel Logue. The stammer made him relatable, humanizing the monarch—perhaps the debilitated Moon's gift in disguise.

Lessons for Students

1. Multiple Panchamahapurusha yogas create COMPLEXITY, not simple power.

2. Yogas show POTENTIAL; afflictions show CHALLENGES—both manifest.

3. Examine 3rd house for sibling-related throne inheritance patterns.

4. Debilitated Moon can undermine even triple Panchamahapurusha confidence.

5. Jupiter in 10th = sustaining power during crisis (most important placement in this chart).

6. Yogakaraka Saturn exalted in Lagna = endurance to fulfill dharma despite not wanting role.

Study Questions and Practice

Beginner Level

  1. What is the Lagna (Ascendant) sign? Which three planets occupy the Lagna?
  2. Name the three Panchamahapurusha yogas present in this chart and which planet creates each.
  3. Where is Jupiter placed? What nakshatra? What yoga does this create?
  4. In which Dasa did George VI become king (December 1936)?

Intermediate Level

  1. Explain why Saturn is called a "yogakaraka" for Libra Lagna. Which houses does Saturn own?
  2. Moon is debilitated in Scorpio. What specific health/speech problems does Raman predict from this placement in the 2nd house?
  3. Why did George VI inherit the throne from his brother rather than directly from his father? Analyze Sun-Mars connection, Jupiter's role as 3rd lord, and Ketu Dasa timing.
  4. Calculate Vimshottari Dasa for February 6, 1952 (death date). Verify it was Venus Dasa, Saturn Bhukti. Why is this combination maraka?
  5. Gajakesari Yoga requires Jupiter-Moon in mutual kendras. Verify this yoga exists (Jupiter in 10th, Moon in 2nd from Libra Lagna). Does Moon's debilitation weaken this yoga?

Advanced Level

  1. Analyze ALL THREE Panchamahapurusha yogas using Shadbala:
    • Calculate Shadbala for Jupiter, Saturn, Venus
    • Which yoga is strongest by planetary strength?
    • Do house placements (1st vs 10th) override Shadbala rankings?
    • Use VedAstro's Calculator
  2. Research "Dw irdwadasa" relationship (Sun-Saturn 2-12 from each other). How did this relationship manifest as father's death unlocking yogakaraka potential?
  3. Compare George VI's chart to his brother Edward VIII (Edward Duke of Windsor, also in Raman's book). Both born to same father—what astrological differences explain why one abdicated, other ruled successfully?
  4. Analyze the Empire's liquidation (India independence 1947) using:
    • Rahu in 5th aspected by 7th lord Mars
    • Venus Dasa, Rahu Bhukti timing
    • Transits of Saturn-Rahu-Jupiter in 1947
Was loss of empire astrologically inevitable?
  5. Reconstruct entire Vimshottari Dasa timeline (1895-1952). Map all major events (birth, marriage, daughters' births, father's death, accession, WWII, empire loss, death) to specific Dasa-Bhukti-Antara periods. Does precision validate Vimshottari system?

Conclusion: The Reluctant King's Triumph

King George VI's horoscope stands as one of the most astrologically blessed yet psychologically burdensome in modern history. Three Panchamahapurusha yogas—Hamsa (Jupiter exalted in 10th), Sasa (Saturn exalted in Lagna), Malavya (Venus in own sign in Lagna)—created a chart "highly fortunate" and "unique," promising royalty, wisdom, endurance, and grace. Two additional powerful Raja yogas reinforced this foundation.

Yet this same chart contained severe afflictions: Moon debilitated in 2nd house (speech problems, emotional anxiety), Mars-Mercury-Sun concentration creating nervous strain, and Venus in Rahu's nakshatra bringing crisis during its Dasa. The yogas promised greatness; the afflictions ensured it came through suffering, reluctance, and personal struggle rather than ease and confidence.

The result: a man who never wanted to be king (Saturn's solitude in Lagna), thrust into monarchy by his brother's abdication (3rd lord Jupiter connecting to 10th, Sun-Mars indicating sibling's role), who then led Britain through its existential crisis (Jupiter in 10th sustaining during Hitler's onslaught), emerged victorious (Venus-Mars combination ending war), but watched his empire dissolve (Rahu in 5th bringing decolonization), and died relatively young at 56 (Venus-Saturn maraka combination).

B.V. Raman teaches through this chart that multiple Panchamahapurusha yogas don't simply "add up" to create superhuman perfection. Instead, they create COMPLEX individuals capable of rising to extraordinary challenges (WWII victory) while struggling with ordinary human limitations (stammer, anxiety, reluctance). The three yogas operated in different domains—Hamsa gave wisdom for leadership, Sasa gave endurance for burden-bearing, Malavya gave grace for representation—but they couldn't erase the debilitated Moon's emotional vulnerability or the 2nd house afflictions' speech impediment.

Perhaps the greatest teaching: George VI's chart shows that yogas reveal DESTINY (what you're meant to do), not necessarily DESIRE (what you want to do). He was astrologically destined for kingship (three royal yogas) despite psychologically unsuited for it (Saturn's solitude, Moon's debilitation). When dharma called (brother abdicated, nation needed leader), the yogas activated, and the reluctant duke became the king who saved constitutional monarchy by embodying it with quiet dignity through Britain's darkest hour.

The three Panchamahapurusha yogas fulfilled their promise—not by making him comfortable, but by making him capable. And that, perhaps, is the highest manifestation of yoga: not ease, but adequacy when called upon to serve a purpose greater than oneself.
