Example For Poverty: Affliction Analysis

Contrast Case: How Debilitations & Malefic Concentrations Create Financial Hardship

Anonymous Case Study Capricorn Lagna Rekha Yoga Poverty Indicators

Educational Context

This anonymous case study demonstrates poverty through multiple afflictions despite seemingly "strong" planetary placements (six planets in 10th house, Moon in 9th, 2nd lord with neechabhanga).

Life Circumstances
  • Occupation: Press compositor (printing press worker—mechanical/manual labor)
  • Income: "Hardly getting 100 chips a month" (very low salary)
  • Status: "Common man," "low social position"
  • Psychological: "Mental frustration," "dissatisfaction and suffering"
  • Character: "Leaning for piety and religiousness" (despite material hardship)
Study the horoscope carefully and you will find the whole structure is rotten. The mutual aspect of two debilitated planets, lord of Lagna and the 2nd in conjunction with Rahu and aspected by other evil forces, the mutual aspects between all the evil planets, viz., the Sun, Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu, suggest poverty, dissatisfaction and suffering.

Key Teaching: This chart is the OPPOSITE of Dhana Yoga example (#67). There, exalted planets in wealth houses created industrial magnate. Here, debilitated planets + malefic concentrations create poverty despite planetary quantity in career/wealth houses.

RahuAries4thWith debilitated Saturn = "unhappiness throughout life"
SunLibra (DEBILITATED)10th2nd lord debilitated, aspects Saturn
MarsLibra10thWith Sun-Ketu = "false sense of prestige"
MercuryLibra10thCombust (with Sun), "planetary fight" with Jupiter
JupiterLibra10th3rd/12th lord (malefic by lordship), combust, fight with Mercury
VenusLibra (Own)10thONLY strong planet, but aspected by 3rd/6th/12th lords
KetuLibra10thWith Sun-Mars-Mercury-Jupiter-Venus stellium
MoonVirgo9thUnaspected (only good feature—sympathetic nature)
The Rotten Structure: Raman says "study carefully and you will find the whole structure is rotten" despite surface features (Moon in 9th, six planets in 10th, 2nd lord neechabhanga). Quantity ≠ Quality. Six planets in one house WITHOUT benefic leadership creates chaos, not power.

Five Affliction Patterns Creating Poverty

1. Debilitated Lagna Lord with Rahu

Saturn (Lagna lord) debilitated in Aries + Rahu = "Most undesirable combination in a horoscope"

Effects:

  • "Lagna is therefore weak rendering the general structure of the horoscope shaky"
  • "Lack of self-confidence, nervousness and weak-mindedness"
  • "Somewhat crafty and poses superior airs" (Rahu's influence)

Why Fatal? Lagna lord = foundation of entire chart. If foundation is rotten (debilitated + with malefic), NO other combinations can fully compensate. Like building mansion on quicksand.

2. Mutual Aspect of Two Debilitated Lords

Saturn (Lagna lord, debilitated in 4th) aspects Sun (2nd lord, debilitated in 10th)

Why Devastating?

  • 1st house (self, vitality) + 2nd house (wealth, resources) = TWO critical houses
  • BOTH lords debilitated = neither foundation nor resources are strong
  • Mutual aspect = debilitations REINFORCE each other, not cancel

Raman: "Capricorn rising and lords of Lagna and the 8th—both debilitated and mutually aspecting—renders the native tall, lean, reddish brown in colour, the body being thin and bony." Physical weakness mirrors financial weakness.

3. Saturn-Rahu in 4th House

"Rahu and Saturn in the 4th is typical example of 'unhappiness' throughout life."

4th house = inner peace, home, mother, education, emotional foundation. Saturn (obstruction) + Rahu (chaos) in 4th = NO emotional stability base. Cannot build prosperity without inner peace.

"The house of mother being afflicted considerably by Rahu indicates protection under a foster-mother" (lost natural mother).

4. Rekha Yoga in 10th House

Rekha Yoga = Specific poverty combination when:

  • Lagna lord has no strength (Saturn debilitated ✓)
  • Lagna lord aspected by 8th lord (Saturn aspects Sun, 2nd lord which is also 8th from 7th ✓ OR interpretation: Sun = 8th lord from Lagna aspects Saturn)
  • Jupiter obscured by Sun (Jupiter combust in 10th ✓)
The 10th Bhava is powerfully subject to Rekha Yoga because the lord of Lagna has no strength, is aspected by the 8th lord, and Jupiter is obscured by the Sun. The result has been, the person has neither knowledge nor wealth, he is penurious, wrathful; his mind is always distressed; he is crafty, disagreeable and miserable.

Result: "Neither knowledge nor wealth... penurious... mind always distressed... miserable." Accurate description of poverty experience.

5. Six-Planet Concentration WITHOUT Leadership

Sun, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Ketu in Libra (10th house)

Surface Analysis: "Wow, six planets in career house! Must be successful!"

Raman's Analysis: "Six planets in the 10th from Lagna... have lot of astrological significance [BUT] all the planets being concentrated in the house of Karma has given the native great aspirations and he is capable of much endeavour and is intellectually inclined [YET] the person was a common man."

Why Stellium Failed?

  • Sun = 2nd lord, debilitated (no financial base)
  • Jupiter = 3rd/12th lord, malefic by lordship, combust (no benefic leadership)
  • Mercury combust, "planetary fight" with Jupiter (conflict, not cooperation)
  • Venus = ONLY strong planet, but "aspected by lords of 3rd, 6th and 12th" (dusthana lords afflict it)
  • Ketu + Mars create "false sense of prestige though the native possesses none"
Stellium Quality Analysis:
Good Stellium (creates power):
• Benefic planets or well-placed malefics
• Sign lord strong
• Kendra/trikona lords involved
• No combustion/planetary war
• Example: Dhana Yoga case (#67) had exalted Jupiter-Saturn cooperation

Bad Stellium (creates chaos):
• Debilitated planets
• Combustion (multiple planets with Sun)
• Planetary war (Mercury-Jupiter fight)
• Dusthana lords (3rd/6th/8th/12th) predominate
• Example: THIS CHART—six planets but all afflicted

Wealth House Analysis: Why 2nd House Failed

Compare this chart's 2nd house situation with Dhana Yoga example:

FactorDhana Yoga (#67)Poverty (#73)
2nd Lord Saturn EXALTED in 11th Sun (Aquarius lord from Capricorn Lagna) DEBILITATED in 10th
2nd Lord Aspect Aspected by exalted Jupiter Aspects debilitated Saturn
2nd House Occupants Sun (9th lord) + Mercury (10th lord) + Rahu = Raja Yoga Empty (Aquarius)—lord Sun is debilitated elsewhere
Result Industrial magnate 100 rupees/month salary

Key Insight: SAME HOUSE (2nd), OPPOSITE RESULTS. Exaltation vs. debilitation of 2nd lord determines wealth vs. poverty more than house occupancy.

Raman: "Note the house of wealth from Chandra Lagna; whilst it should have made the subject a millionaire it has been so spoiled by the evil combinations mentioned above that the person was a common man."

From Moon in Virgo, 2nd house is Libra (contains SIX planets). Numerically strong—but qualitatively afflicted by combustion, planetary war, debilitated Sun, dusthana lords.

Occupation: Press Compositor

Why Printing Press Work?

Rahu being the Atmakaraka, and the 10th being aspected by Saturn and Rahu, and occupied by Ketu and Mars (apart from the Sun, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus) made the press compositor.

Astrological Rationale:

  • Mercury in 10th: Writing, printing, communication industry
  • Mars in 10th: Mechanical work, machinery operation
  • Saturn aspect on 10th: Labor, manual work, low-paid service
  • Rahu involvement: Foreign/modern technology (printing press = industrial machinery)
  • Sun debilitated: No authority/ownership (employee, not owner)

Result: Mercury (communication) + Mars (machinery) + Saturn (labor) = Printing press compositor (sets type, operates machines for newspapers/books)—skilled labor but low-paid.

Compare with Dhana Yoga case: Mars + Saturn there also = industrial work, but EXALTED planets + wealth yogas = OWNER of factories. Here: DEBILITATED planets = worker IN factory.

Student Practice Questions

Beginner
  1. What is Rekha Yoga? What three conditions create it? Verify all three are present in this chart.
  2. Saturn is debilitated in which sign? Sun is debilitated in which sign? Identify both debilitations in this chart.
  3. Count the planets in the 10th house. Why didn't six planets in career house create success?
Intermediate
  1. Raman says "the whole structure is rotten" despite Moon in 9th (fortune house) and six planets in 10th (career house). Explain WHY these seemingly good placements FAILED to create prosperity. What QUALITY factors override QUANTITY factors?
  2. Compare this 2nd house situation with Dhana Yoga example (#67). Create a table: What is 2nd lord? Is it exalted/debilitated? Where placed? Aspected by which planets? What is 2nd house occupied by? Then explain the wealth disparity (magnate vs. 100 rupees/month) using ONLY 2nd house analysis.
  3. The native became a "press compositor." Using ONLY 10th house planets (Sun, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Ketu) and aspects (Saturn, Rahu), explain why THIS specific occupation (not farmer, not merchant, not clerk—specifically printing press mechanical work). Which planet indicates printing? Which indicates machinery? Which indicates manual labor?
Advanced
  1. Stellium Quality Research: Find 5 charts with 4+ planets in one house. For each, analyze: (a) Are planets exalted/own/debilitated? (b) Is sign lord strong? (c) Any combustion/planetary war? (d) Which houses do stellium planets rule? (e) Outcome: success or struggle? Develop "Stellium Quality Score" formula weighting these factors. Can you predict outcome from score alone?
  2. Debilitation Cancellation Verification: Raman says "the 2nd lord has obtained neechabhanga" (debilitation cancellation). Sun is debilitated in Libra. Research neechabhanga rules: (a) Venus (Libra lord) must be in kendra from Lagna or Moon—is it? (b) OR exalted planet must aspect debilitated planet—does it? (c) Calculate: Does neechabhanga ACTUALLY exist, or did Raman mean something else? (d) If it exists, why didn't it HELP—isn't neechabhanga supposed to turn debilitation into strength?
  3. Poverty vs. Wealth Comparative Analysis: Create detailed comparison table between Dhana Yoga (#67) and Poverty (#73) charts. Include: (1) Lagna lord strength, (2) 2nd lord strength, (3) 2nd/9th/10th/11th house conditions, (4) Benefic vs. malefic predominance, (5) Yogas present. Then answer: Is there a SINGLE FACTOR that determines wealth vs. poverty? Or must ALL factors align? Can ONE strong factor (e.g., exalted Jupiter) overcome multiple afflictions?
