B.V. Raman's autobiographical journey through 60 years of Vedic astrology practice.
Part 80 · Series: Foundational & Learning Topics
The Arudha—The Point of Reputation and Public Perception
While the 10th house shows career and professional achievement, the Arudha Lagna (sometimes called the Arudha point) reveals public perception, reputation, and how the world sees the person. Raman discovered that the Arudha is often different from the natal Lagna, and this difference explains why some people are seen by the world very differently than they see themselves. The Arudha shows what image the person projects publicly, what reputation they carry, and how they are generally perceived.
"The Arudha is calculated by counting from the 1st house lord to its position in the chart. If the Arudha is far from the natal Lagna, the person's public image differs greatly from their internal reality. A person with a gentle natal Lagna but a Mars-ruled Arudha is perceived as aggressive and powerful despite their internal gentleness. A person with an ambitious natal Lagna but a Saturn-ruled Arudha is perceived as serious and restrictive despite their internal ambition. Understanding the Arudha helps people understand the gap between who they are and how they are perceived, allowing conscious management of reputation."
Arudha Planets and Public Image
Raman described how different planetary rulers affect reputation:
"When the Sun rules the Arudha, the person is perceived as authoritative and leadership-oriented. When Mercury rules, they are seen as intelligent and communicative. When Venus rules, they are seen as charming and artistic. When Mars rules, they are seen as energetic and courageous. When Saturn rules, they are seen as serious and responsible. When Jupiter rules, they are seen as wise and benevolent. A person's actual character may not match their Arudha ruler, but that's how the world perceives them. Understanding this allows people to consciously either embrace the public image or work to shift it if it doesn't align with their values."
Arudha Transits and Reputation Shifts
Raman described how reputation changes with planetary transits:
"When planets transit the Arudha or aspects shift, public reputation often shifts. A beneficial planet transit to the Arudha can suddenly elevate reputation—a person suddenly gains public favor despite no change in their actual behavior. A malefic transit can damage reputation—a person falls from public grace despite no actual wrongdoing. Understanding these Arudha transits allows people to recognize when reputation shifts are astrological cycles rather than personal failings, maintaining psychological equilibrium through reputation's natural ebbs and flows."
Key Takeaways: Arudha Analysis
What This Part Teaches Us:
- The Arudha shows public perception and reputation: Independent of personal character or reality.
- Gap between Lagna and Arudha shows discrepancy between self-image and public image: Where projection doesn't match reality.
- Arudha's ruler shows how the person is generally perceived: Sun = authoritative; Mercury = intelligent; Mars = courageous; etc.
- Transits to the Arudha affect reputation and public favor: Benefic transits elevate; malefic damage reputation.
- Reputation shifts are astrological cycles, not always personal failings: Understanding this prevents unnecessary shame.
- Understanding Arudha helps manage public perception: Either embracing or consciously shifting the image.
- Strong Arudha indicates clear public image; weak Arudha indicates ambiguous public perception: Determining reputation clarity.
Through Arudha analysis, Raman demonstrated that public reputation and perception are astrologically determined and cyclical. By understanding the Arudha, people can recognize reputation shifts as natural astrological cycles, manage their public image consciously, and maintain healthy perspective on public favor and criticism.
