B.V. Raman's autobiographical journey through 60 years of Vedic astrology practice.
Part 68 · Series: Foundational & Learning Topics
The Dwadasamsa—Chart of Life Purpose and Dharma
While the Navamsa reveals spiritual purpose, the Dwadasamsa—the twelve-fold division of each sign—reveals Dharma (righteous duty, life purpose) and the proper role a person should fulfill in society. Raman discovered that the Dwadasamsa reveals what type of work, relationships, and social role bring genuine fulfillment, and what activities are contrary to the soul's purpose. Many people pursue careers and lifestyles contrary to their Dwadasamsa indications, resulting in chronic dissatisfaction despite external success. Aligning life direction with Dwadasamsa indications brings deep fulfillment.
"The Dwadasamsa shows the proper dharma for this lifetime. A person born with Dwadasamsa planets in business-related positions should ideally pursue business—they will find success and fulfillment there. A person with Dwadasamsa planets in teaching or healing positions should ideally pursue those paths—other careers will feel constraining. I counseled many individuals who were materially successful but spiritually empty, only to discover their Dwadasamsa showed a completely different life path. When they changed direction to align with Dwadasamsa indications, they discovered true fulfillment. The Dwadasamsa is the dharma-chart; it shows what work you came to do."
Dwadasamsa Placements and Life Roles
Raman described different Dwadasamsa placements:
"Planets in different houses of the Dwadasamsa indicate the proper life role. The Sun in the Dwadasamsa 10th house indicates leadership and authority roles bring fulfillment. Saturn in the 10th indicates administration, discipline, and responsibility roles bring fulfillment. Venus in the 9th indicates artistic and teaching roles bring fulfillment. Mercury in the 6th indicates service, analysis, and problem-solving roles bring fulfillment. A person ignoring their Dwadasamsa indications may achieve conventional success but will feel a deep sense of wrongness, as if life is being lived in violation of some fundamental truth. Alignment with Dwadasamsa creates harmony between soul intention and life expression."
Dwadasamsa and Life Transitions
Raman described how Dwadasamsa guides life changes:
"Dwadasamsa indicates when life transitions are necessary. A person whose Rasi shows continued career success might find their Dwadasamsa showing that career should end at a certain point, with energy redirected toward family or spiritual practice. These transitions, while challenging, restore alignment with dharma. I have seen individuals experience what appeared to be career disasters—forced job loss, business failure, health crisis preventing continued work—only to later recognize these were dharma-aligned transitions pushing them toward their true life purpose shown in the Dwadasamsa. The Rasi shows what will happen; the Dwadasamsa shows what should happen."
Reading the Dwadasamsa with the Rasi
Raman described the integrated approach:
"The complete life understanding comes from reading Rasi, Navamsa, and Dwadasamsa together. The Rasi shows the life pattern and destiny. The Navamsa shows the spiritual path and ultimate soul purpose. The Dwadasamsa shows the proper role and work in this lifetime. Sometimes all three charts align—the same person is indicated to be a spiritual seeker, will have a teaching role, and is destined to become a teacher. Perfect alignment. But sometimes they contradict—the Rasi shows business destiny, the Navamsa shows spiritual inclination, the Dwadasamsa shows teaching role. Then the astrologer must help the person understand and navigate these tensions, often indicating a life of business in the morning, teaching in the afternoon, and spirituality in retirement."
