My Experiences in Astrology — Modern Reader's Guide

B.V. Raman's autobiographical journey through 60 years of Vedic astrology practice.

Part 44 · Series: Foundational & Learning Topics

The Most Sensitive Application

Among all applications of predictive astrology, Raman considered child health prediction the most sensitive and morally significant. The Sanskrit term Balarishta—literally "child affliction"—refers to astrological combinations indicating child mortality or serious childhood illness. Raman brought deep wisdom and humanity to this difficult topic.

"When a parent brings a newborn's chart asking about the child's health, I experienced the weight of this responsibility most acutely. The classical texts provide combinations for Balarishta—indications of childhood disease or early death. But I learned that not all children with these combinations die. There are saving grace indicators that can override or mitigate Balarishta. Understanding both the warning signs and the saving factors became essential to my practice."
The Compassion Principle: Balarishta combinations indicate risk, not destiny. Proper remediation, medical care, and parental awareness can help many children overcome early death indications.

The Balarishta Combinations

Raman documented the classical combinations indicating childhood risk:

"The classical texts describe multiple Balarishta combinations. Weakness in the 5th house of children, presence of malefics in the 5th without beneficial aspects, the 5th house lord weak or in harmful planetary combinations—these all indicate Balarishta. The birth of a child during inauspicious lunar periods, unfavorable dasha periods at birth, severe aspects from Saturn or Mars—these multiply the risk. When I identified such combinations in a child's chart, I would investigate further to see if saving graces existed."

Major Balarishta indicators:

  • 5th house weakness: Weak 5th lord or malefics in 5th without benefic aspect
  • Maraka activation: Life-threatening planets activating during early dashas
  • Birth timing: Inauspicious lunar phases or planetary conditions at birth
  • Ascendant weakness: Weak ascendant reducing vitality reserves
  • Moon debilitation: Moon in difficult placements affecting emotional immunity

The Saving Grace Indicators

Raman emphasized that many saving factors could mitigate Balarishta:

"Classical texts also provide saving graces—indications that overcome Balarishta. A strong ascendant and 1st house lord can provide life-force that overrides 5th house weakness. Strong beneficial planets, particularly Jupiter, can protect the child even with Balarishta combinations. The Jupiter's strength, the Sun's placement—these become guardians of the child's life. When I found strong ascendant, strong Sun, strong Jupiter, or protective raja yogas alongside Balarishta combinations, I would tell parents: 'This combination requires care and attention, but many saving factors suggest the child can survive and thrive.'"

Major saving grace factors:

  • Strong ascendant: Powerful 1st house and ascendant lord providing life-force
  • Strong benefics: Jupiter, Venus well-placed and powerful
  • Strong Sun: Sun in good position provides vital strength
  • Protective yogas: Raja yogas or other beneficial combinations
  • Beneficial dasha timing: Good dasha lord during early years
The Balance Principle: Balarishta + Saving Graces = Risk that can be mitigated through proper care. Neither factor alone tells the full story.

Raman's Approach with Parents

Raman described his compassionate approach when discussing Balarishta:

"When parents came with newborns showing Balarishta, I would never say 'your child will not survive.' Instead, I would say: 'This chart indicates health challenges in childhood. Your child will need careful medical attention, good nutrition, protective practices. Watch for health issues particularly during these periods. But I also see protecting factors—your awareness and care can make a significant difference.' This approach motivated parents to provide excellent care without creating fatalism or despair."

The Role of Remediation

Raman recognized that remedial measures played important roles in mitigating Balarishta:

"In Vedic tradition, when Balarishta is indicated, various remedial practices are recommended—mantras, yajnas, gemstones, dietary practices. Whether these work through mystical mechanisms or through the power of parental attention and care focused on the child, they contribute to child survival. The research shows that children whose parents are astrologically warned about potential health issues receive better care—more frequent medical check-ups, better nutrition, more parental attention. This alone significantly improves outcomes."

Key Takeaways: Child Health and Compassion

What This Part Teaches Us:

  • Balarishta combinations indicate childhood health risk: But not absolute destiny.
  • 5th house and 5th lord strength indicate child health: Weakness suggests increased vulnerability.
  • Multiple saving grace factors can overcome Balarishta: Strong ascendant, Jupiter, Sun, and beneficial yogas provide protection.
  • Parental awareness is itself protective: When parents know of potential risks, they provide better preventive care.
  • Remedial practices support child welfare: Whether mystical or psychological, they focus parental attention on child protection.
  • Compassionate communication is essential: Warning parents without creating fatalism, empowering them without dismissing risk.
  • The chart reveals risk, but the outcome depends on care and response: Not all Balarishta children die; many thrive with proper attention.

Through Balarishta analysis, Raman demonstrated that predictive astrology's highest calling is not to predict death but to help parents protect their children—combining astrological insight with medical care and compassionate support.
