My Experiences in Astrology — Modern Reader's Guide

B.V. Raman's autobiographical journey through 60 years of Vedic astrology practice.

Part 25 · Series: Foundational & Learning Topics

The Most Sensitive Prediction

Of all the predictions an astrologer can make, none is more delicate than longevity. Predicting the length of life requires not just astronomical knowledge but deep wisdom, compassion, and understanding of what such information should and should not be shared. Throughout his career, Raman developed methods for calculating longevity while grappling with the profound ethical questions such knowledge raises.

"Longevity prediction is the ultimate test of astrological skill and wisdom. You must understand the traditional calculations, validate them against many observed lives, and then decide whether and how to communicate this information. I came to believe that the astrologer's primary duty is not to frighten but to help people understand their life span in a way that deepens their spiritual awareness and improves their use of the time they have."
The Paradox of Knowledge: Knowing one's approximate lifespan could deepen spiritual practice and life purpose, or it could create anxiety and despair. The astrologer must be extremely careful with this knowledge.

The Traditional Methods

Vedic astrology provides several traditional methods for calculating longevity, each with different results:

"There are at least five major systems for calculating longevity: Jaimini, Parashara, Manjula, and others. These often produce different results for the same person. Part of my work was testing these methods against actual lifespans to understand which systems were most reliable and under what conditions each system was most applicable."

Major longevity calculation systems:

  • Parashara's method: Based on strength of Sun, Moon, and planets; the most commonly used system
  • Jaimini's method: Based on Jaimini's special principles; particularly useful for certain chart types
  • Manduka's method: Based on combinations of planets and houses
  • Vimsopaka method: Based on divisional strength assessment
  • Ashtakavarga method: Using the Ashtakavarga system for longevity assessment
The Convergence Principle: When multiple systems agree on longevity range, the prediction is more reliable. When they diverge widely, significant uncertainty exists. Raman learned to present ranges rather than specific ages.

The Categories of Life Span

Vedic astrology traditionally divides lifespans into three categories:

"Short life (Alpyu) typically means less than 32 years. Medium life (Madhyu) typically means 32-70 years. Long life (Dirghayu) typically means more than 70 years. But these categories are just rough guides. Life is far more nuanced. A person might be classified as having 'medium' life but actually live into their 90s. Or a person with longevity markers might face an accident or illness that cuts their life short."

Longevity classifications:

  • Alpyu (short): Generally less than 32 years; indicates major life lessons in youth
  • Madhyu (medium): Generally 32-70 years; the average lifespan in traditional times
  • Dirghayu (long): Generally more than 70 years; indicates extended opportunity for growth

Factors Indicating Longevity Challenges

Raman identified specific planetary combinations suggesting health challenges and potential shortened lifespan:

"Saturn or Mars in the 8th house, weak Moon and Sun, Rahu-Ketu affecting the 8th or 12th houses—these are traditional indicators of health challenges. But the manifestation depends on the strength of benefics, the position of the 8th lord, and dozens of other factors. A person with apparent longevity afflictions might live a long, healthy life if strong benefics provide protection. And a person with apparent strength might face health crises if underlying afflictions are hidden in divisional charts."

Longevity weakness indicators:

  • 8th house afflictions: Saturn, Mars, Rahu, or Ketu in the 8th house
  • Weak 8th lord: Debilitated or badly aspected ruler of the 8th house
  • Weak Moon and Sun: Luminaries show vitality; their weakness indicates low life force
  • Maraka planets: Lords of 2nd and 7th houses can act as death-inflicting planets
  • Malefic transits: Saturn and Mars transits through the 8th house during vulnerable periods

The Role of Remedies and Karma

Raman was adamant that longevity predictions were not absolute fate:

"A chart might indicate shortened lifespan, but I never told a client, 'You will die at 50.' Instead, I would say, 'Your chart shows vulnerability during this period; please take extra care of your health, maintain spiritual practices, and follow the remedies.' Many people I predicted health challenges for lived well beyond their apparent lifespan through disciplined lifestyle and spiritual practice. Remedies, when done sincerely, can genuinely extend life."

Factors that can modify longevity indications:

  • Spiritual practice: Daily meditation and mantra strengthen the subtle body, extending life
  • Lifestyle choices: Health-conscious living can overcome astrological predisposition
  • Medical care: Modern medicine can manage conditions that would have been fatal in earlier times
  • Divine grace: Beyond calculation, cosmic grace sometimes extends life beyond predicted span

When to Share Longevity Predictions

Raman grappled throughout his career with the question of whether to share longevity predictions:

"I came to the belief that longevity information should only be shared when: (1) the person specifically asks about it, (2) you have very high confidence in your prediction, (3) you can present it in a way that deepens rather than diminishes the person's life. If a prediction would create fear and anxiety without serving spiritual growth, it's better to remain silent. The astrologer's ethics matter more than demonstrating knowledge."

Key Takeaways: The Mystery of Life Duration

What This Part Teaches Us:

  • Multiple calculation systems exist but often diverge: Convergence among methods increases confidence; divergence indicates uncertainty.
  • Traditional categories (short/medium/long) are rough guides: Individual variation is enormous; prediction ranges are more honest than specific ages.
  • Afflictions indicate vulnerability but not inevitability: A person with health challenges can live long through discipline and remedies.
  • Modern medicine changed longevity predictions: Conditions that would have been fatal in traditional times are now manageable.
  • Spiritual practice modifies astrological predisposition: Daily practice genuinely strengthens the life force and can extend lifespan.
  • Ethical responsibility is paramount: Longevity predictions should only be shared when they serve the person's spiritual growth.
  • Ultimate uncertainty remains: Free will, karma modification, and divine grace exist beyond astrological calculation.

Through his lifetime study of longevity prediction, Raman demonstrated that astrology's highest purpose is not to create fear about the future but to deepen our awareness of how precious each moment is and how we can use our time, whatever its length, for spiritual growth and service to others.
