The Power of Beginning at the Right Moment

If birth charts are fixed and planetary positions immutable, there is still one domain where we have absolute freedom: the choice of when to begin important ventures. This is the domain of Muhurtha —electional astrology—the science of selecting auspicious moments for launching enterprises, signing contracts, beginning journeys, or undertaking any significant action.

"I discovered early in my practice that Muhurtha is perhaps the most practical and immediately useful branch of astrology. While natal astrology reveals tendencies and probabilities, Muhurtha allows you to choose the probability you wish to manifest. By beginning an undertaking at an auspicious moment, you align it with favorable planetary configurations and vastly improve its chances of success."
The Principle of Initiation: Everything that begins at a particular moment carries the astrology of that moment like a seed carries the genetic code of its parents. By choosing an auspicious moment, you ensure that your undertaking is "born" under favorable stars.

The Elements of Muhurtha Selection

Muhurtha is not simple. Raman identified multiple factors that must align for a moment to be truly auspicious:

"A true Muhurtha requires not just a favorable day but a favorable hour, not just a favorable planet but the absence of adverse influences. The lunar day (tithi), the weekday, the constellation (nakshatra), the hour, and the aspect of planets all must work together. This complexity is why genuine Muhurtha astrology requires deep knowledge and careful calculation."

The primary considerations include:

  • Lunar day (tithi): Certain lunar days are auspicious for specific actions; others should be avoided
  • Weekday and weekday lord: Different planets rule different days; a day ruled by a benefic planet is generally favorable
  • Nakshatra (constellation): The Moon's position in specific constellations can support or hinder different types of activities
  • Hour (hora): Even within an auspicious day, specific hours ruled by beneficial planets are preferred
  • Planetary aspects and transits: The positions of transiting planets and their aspects must be checked
  • Avoidance of adverse combinations: Certain combinations (like Rahu, Ketu in particular positions) must be avoided
The Art of Synthesis: Selecting a Muhurtha requires integrating all these factors into a coherent whole. The astrologer must find the narrow window when all factors align favorably for the specific type of action being undertaken.

Different Muhurtha for Different Activities

Raman emphasized that different activities require different auspicious factors:

"Marriage requires one set of Muhurtha considerations; beginning a business requires another. A moment auspicious for signing a contract might be inauspicious for beginning a journey. The astrologer must understand the nature of the activity and select the moment accordingly. This requires both knowledge and intuition—knowing the rules and knowing how to apply them intelligently."

Common activities requiring careful Muhurtha selection:

  • Marriage: Must avoid Rahu, Ketu, Mars afflictions; must strengthen 7th house considerations
  • Beginning business: Requires strong benefics for success; Mercury's position is crucial
  • House warming/purchase: Moon's position and Jupiter's aspects are particularly important
  • Beginning education: Mercury's position and Jupiter's aspects are key
  • Travel/journey: Avoiding adverse planetary combinations for safe journey
  • Surgery/medical procedure: Moon's position and avoiding Mars afflictions are critical

When Muhurtha Proved Its Value

Raman documented numerous cases where Muhurtha selection made a measurable difference:

"A businessman came to me frustrated. His business was failing despite his best efforts. I examined his chart and found that he had begun his business at an inauspicious time—during a period of Mercury retrograde and with Moon in an afflicted position. I recommended that he formally 'restart' his business at an auspicious moment, performing a simple ceremony and adjusting his business registration date. Within months, his business began to flourish. The same business, reborn under auspicious stars, changed its destiny."

Another case involved marriage:

"A couple consulted me a few months into their marriage, which was already troubled. I discovered they had married at a highly inauspicious moment—without proper Muhurtha consultation. I recommended they renew their vows at an auspicious time, essentially 'remarrying' at the right moment. The transformation was remarkable. The marriage moved from troubled to harmonious, not because anything external changed but because they had initiated a new beginning under favorable stars."

The Limits of Muhurtha

Raman was clear about Muhurtha's limitations:

"An auspicious Muhurtha can provide favorable conditions for success, but it cannot make an inherently flawed undertaking work. If you choose an auspicious moment to begin a business that is fundamentally unsound, the Muhurtha will only delay failure, not prevent it. Muhurtha supports intention; it does not substitute for wisdom, skill, and honest effort."

The greatest benefit of Muhurtha comes when:

  • The person has prepared adequately for the undertaking
  • The activity aligns with the person's natural talents and dasa periods
  • The person's chart supports success in the chosen field
  • The Muhurtha is selected with precision and understanding

The Practical Application

Unlike natal astrology, which describes what is, Muhurtha empowers you to create what you choose. This makes it uniquely valuable in daily life:

"I always tell clients: you cannot change your birth chart, but you can choose when to act. By choosing auspicious moments for your important actions, you align your intentions with cosmic support. This is not magic; it is working intelligently with natural forces."

Key Takeaways: The Science of Auspicious Timing

What This Part Teaches Us:

  • Every beginning carries the astrology of that moment: Like a child inheriting their birth chart, an undertaking inherits the astrological influences of the moment it begins.
  • Auspicious timing dramatically improves probability of success: A well-chosen Muhurtha aligns your action with favorable planetary configurations.
  • Different activities require different timing: Marriage, business, travel, and other activities each have unique Muhurtha requirements.
  • Muhurtha is practical and testable: Unlike some aspects of astrology that work subtly, Muhurtha effects are often measurable and observable in concrete results.
  • Timing cannot substitute for wisdom: An auspicious moment supports well-conceived plans but cannot make inherently flawed undertakings succeed.
  • You have freedom of choice here: While your birth chart is fixed, you have absolute freedom to choose when to act. This is where genuine agency resides.

Through Muhurtha astrology, Raman gave his clients a practical tool to participate consciously in their own destiny-making. Instead of passively accepting what comes, they could actively choose auspicious moments for their important ventures, aligning intention with cosmic timing.
