Mastering Ashtakavarga Part 4: The Prasthara Chakra - Spreading Out the Benefic Points

Mastering Ashtakavarga — A Complete Modern Guide

A comprehensive 20-part series transforming the classical Ashtakavarga system into practical predictive techniques for modern astrologers. From basic bindu counting to advanced Kakshya transit timing.

Part 4 of 20 • The Prasthara Chakra • Topics: Bindu Contributors, 96-Cell Grid, Precision Analysis

You've learned to calculate Bhinnashtakavarga (Part 1), Samudayashtakavarga (Part 2), and reduction techniques (Part 3). Now comes the Prasthara Chakra — a deceptively simple tool that unlocks precision timing in Dasa and Gochara predictions. While the Samudayashtakavarga gives you total bindus per sign (e.g., "Libra has 5 bindus"), the Prasthara shows you who contributed each bindu. This distinction transforms vague predictions into precise event timing.

"The tabular representation of the spreading-out or isolation of the benefic points, given out by each planet, is called 'Prasthara Chakra'."

Ashtakavarga System of Prediction

The Prasthara Chakra is a 96-cell grid (12 signs × 8 contributors) that isolates each planet's donations across all signs. Think of it as a forensic breakdown of your Bhinnashtakavarga — instead of knowing "Libra has 5 bindus in Sun's chart," you'll know exactly that Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, and Lagna contributed those bindus, while Mercury, Venus, and Moon did not.

What Is Prasthara and Why Does It Matter?

The Sanskrit word Prasthara means "spreading out" or "distributing". In Ashtakavarga, it refers to the diagrammatic representation of spreading out the benefic points (bindus) contributed by each planet in a given Bhinnashtakavarga.

Why Prasthara Matters:

  • Dasa Interpretation: During Saturn Dasa, check which signs have Saturn's bindu in the Sun's Prasthara (Article 14)
  • Gochara Timing: When Jupiter transits Libra, check which planets contributed bindus there — if Jupiter himself donated a bindu, the transit is stronger (Article 15)
  • Kakshya Analysis: Each sign is divided into 8 sub-periods (Kakshya) ruled by the 8 contributors. If Saturn's Kakshya in Libra has a bindu, Saturn sub-period brings good results (Article 15)
  • Precision Timing: Instead of "Sun transit through Libra is good," you can say "Sun transit is good only during Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, and Lagna Kaksyas — not Mercury, Venus, or Moon Kaksyas"

The Prasthara is not calculated separately — it's simply a reorganization of data you already have from the Bhinnashtakavarga. Classical writers prescribe drawing 9 horizontal lines (east to west) and 13 vertical lines (north to south), creating a 96-cell grid.

Grid Structure: 8 rows (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Lagna in descending order of their orbits from Earth) × 12 columns (12 signs starting from the planet's natal position) = 96 cells. Each cell contains either a bindu (0) or is empty (rekha).

Building the Prasthara — Sun's Example

Let's use the Standard Horoscope example from the text (Pisces Ascendant, Sun in Virgo). Below is the Sun's Prasthara Chakra — the first of seven you'll construct for a complete Ashtakavarga analysis.

How to Read This Table:

  • Horizontal (rows): Shows where each contributor (Saturn, Jupiter, etc.) placed bindus from the Sun's position
  • Vertical (columns): Shows which planets contributed bindus to each sign
  • "0" = bindu (benefic point), blank cell = rekha (no contribution)
  • Total column: How many bindus that planet contributed overall (should match Bhinnashtakavarga totals)
  • Total row: Total bindus in each sign (should match Samudayashtakavarga for Sun)

Sun000005
Venus0003
Mercury0003
Moon00004
Lagna000004
Total Bindus45235533111538
Key Insight: The 5 bindus in Libra are contributed by Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, and Lagna. The 5 bindus in Aquarius are from Saturn, Jupiter, Sun, and Moon. This distinction is critical — even though both signs have 5 bindus, the contributors differ, affecting Dasa/Kakshya timing.

Verification Steps:

  1. Total row (38 bindus) matches total from Sun's Bhinnashtakavarga before reduction
  2. Each column total matches the Samudayashtakavarga for that sign
  3. Each row total matches the individual planet's contribution in Bhinnashtakavarga

All Seven Prasthara Chakras

A complete Ashtakavarga analysis requires seven Prasthara Chakras — one for each of the seven planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn). Below are all seven grids from the Standard Horoscope. Note that the starting sign differs for each — it always begins with the planet's natal position.

Observation: Notice how Saturn's Prasthara shows heavy concentration in Leo-Libra (24 of 39 bindus = 61.5%). This clustering pattern is important for transit predictions — Saturn transits through Leo-Libra will be far more productive than transits through other signs.

Practical Use Preview — Why You Need Prasthara

The Prasthara Chakra becomes indispensable in two advanced techniques we'll cover later in this series:

Dasa Interpretation (Article 14)

During Saturn Mahadasa, check Saturn's row in all seven Prasthara Chakras. Signs where Saturn contributed bindus will give favorable results during Saturn periods.

Example: In Sun's Prasthara above, Saturn contributed bindus in Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, and Aquarius. Therefore, when Sun transits these signs during Saturn Dasa, or when Saturn Dasa + Sun Antardasa occurs, results are favorable.

Without Prasthara, you'd only know "Sun has 5 bindus in Libra" — you wouldn't know if Saturn contributed one, limiting your Dasa predictions.

Kakshya Transit Timing (Article 15)

Each sign is divided into 8 Kaksyas (sub-periods) ruled by the 8 contributors in sequence: Saturn → Jupiter → Mars → Sun → Venus → Mercury → Moon → Lagna.

Example: When Jupiter transits Libra (which has 5 bindus in Sun's chart), the transit is not uniformly good throughout. Using the Prasthara:

  • Saturn Kakshya: Good (Saturn donated bindu)
  • Jupiter Kakshya: Good (Jupiter donated bindu)
  • Mars Kakshya: Good (Mars donated bindu)
  • Sun Kakshya: Good (Sun donated bindu)
  • Venus Kakshya: Bad (no bindu from Venus)
  • Mercury Kakshya: Bad (no bindu from Mercury)
  • Moon Kakshya: Bad (no bindu from Moon)
  • Lagna Kakshya: Good (Lagna donated bindu)

Key Insight: Prasthara transforms crude timing ("Jupiter transit through Libra is good") into precise day-level predictions ("Jupiter transit is good on days 1-15 and 27-30, but average on days 16-26"). This is the true power of Ashtakavarga — and it all starts with properly constructed Prasthara Chakras.

Key Takeaways

  • Prasthara Chakra is a 96-cell grid (12 signs × 8 contributors) that isolates individual planetary contributions to each sign's bindu total
  • It's not a separate calculation — it's a reorganization of Bhinnashtakavarga data you already have
  • Construct seven Prasthara Chakras — one for each planet (Sun through Saturn)
  • Starting sign is always the planet's natal position; contributors are listed in descending order of orbital distance: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Lagna
  • Horizontal reading: Shows where each contributor placed bindus from that planet's position
  • Vertical reading: Shows which contributors donated bindus to each sign
  • Essential for Dasa interpretation: During Saturn Dasa, check Saturn's row across all Prasthara Chakras to find favorable signs and periods
  • Essential for Kakshya timing: Divides each sign into 8 sub-periods ruled by the 8 contributors — only sub-periods with bindus give good results
  • Verification: Total row should match Samudayashtakavarga; each column should match individual planet contributions from Bhinnashtakavarga
  • Prasthara enables precision timing — transforming vague transit predictions into day-level accuracy
