Mastering Ashtakavarga Part 10: Jupiter's Ashtakavarga - Children, Fortune, and the Greatest Yoga

Mastering Ashtakavarga — The Complete System

A comprehensive exploration of B.V. Raman's Ashtakavarga System of Prediction, transforming ancient numerical astrology into practical predictive tools for modern astrologers.

Part 10 of 20 • Jupiter's Ashtakavarga • Topics: Children Prediction, Fortune & Rulership, Raja Yogas, Timing Births

This is the longest and most comprehensive planet chapter in the Ashtakavarga system. Jupiter's Ashtakavarga reveals not just wealth and fortune, but holds the key to one of astrology's most challenging predictions: the number and timing of children.

Where Mercury's Ashtakavarga focused on intelligence and speech, Jupiter's Ashtakavarga deals with children, fortune, rulership, and the fulfillment of life's greatest desires. Jupiter is the Putrakaraka (significator of children) and the natural benefic whose strength determines whether one becomes a ruler or struggles through life.

"When Jupiter, endowed with 8 bindus, is in a quadrant or trine, in exaltation or own house, the person becomes a ruler by dint of his own capacity."

B.V. Raman, Ashtakavarga System of Prediction

This chapter explores:

  • Results by Bindu Count — From loss of relatives (0 bindus) to great fame (8 bindus)
  • Jupiter and Rulership — The greatest Raja Yoga in Ashtakavarga
  • Number of Children — Five different methods with worked examples
  • Timing Birth of Children — Year, month, nakshatra, and even the child's Lagna

Results by Bindu Count (0-8)

The fundamental results of Jupiter in each sign based on the number of bindus:

BindusResults
0Loss of relatives and riches. Jupiter without a single bindu creates severe affliction. Family separations, financial losses.
1Ill-health and affliction. Chronic health problems, suffering from diseases.
2Fear from rulers. Legal troubles, government harassment, authority problems.
3Ear troubles, loss of energy. Hearing problems, fatigue, lack of vitality.
4Not much good and not much evil. Neutral results. Average life experiences.
5Destruction of enemies, success in all endeavors. Victory over opposition, achievement of goals.
6Gain of riches, conveyances etc. Wealth accumulation, vehicles, properties acquired.
7Great fortune and happiness. Exceptional luck, joy, fulfillment of desires.
8Great fame, happiness and riches. Maximum benefic results. Celebrity status, enormous wealth.

Pattern: Notice how 5+ bindus consistently produce beneficial results. This is the threshold for Jupiter's positive manifestation. Below 4 bindus, even the Great Benefic struggles to protect.

Jupiter and Rulership — The Greatest Yoga

Jupiter's Ashtakavarga contains the most powerful Raja Yoga (kingship combination) in the system. This is the yoga that creates rulers, leaders, and individuals of exceptional authority.

The Primary Rulership Yoga

When Jupiter, endowed with 8 bindus, is in a quadrant, a trine, in exaltation or own house, or in any other place free from combustion or unconnected with the planet's debilitation or inimical signs, the person becomes a ruler by dint of his own capacity.

B.V. Raman notes this combination is stated very generally and offers two interpretations:

Interpretation 1 (Liberal)

Jupiter must have 8 bindus and must not occupy:

  • Sign of debilitation (Capricorn)
  • Sign of an enemy

If these conditions are met, the yoga operates.

Interpretation 2 (Strict)

Jupiter must be in a kendra or trikona AND satisfy one of these:

  • Exalted (Cancer)
  • Own house (Sagittarius/Pisces)
  • Free from combustion
  • Not in enemy's house

Raman's conclusion: The intensity varies by specifics. Jupiter exalted in a kendra with 8 bindus is the most powerful. Jupiter merely free from combustion in a house that's neither kendra nor trikona produces the yoga, but with lessened intensity.

Caution: "One should therefore be careful in assessing the importance of such yogas in actual practice." Not all 8-bindu Jupiters create rulers — context and intensity matter.

Gradations of Fortune (5-8 Bindus)

The classical text Naradeeya provides a graduated scale:

BindusResults (if in kendra/trikona + exaltation/own sign)
8Becomes rich, a ruler or equal to him. Maximum power and authority.
7Endowed with riches, women and fortune. Great prosperity and pleasure.
6Will have conveyances and wealth. Material comforts secured.
5Possesses character and success. Moral excellence and achievement.

Famous Examples: Tagore and Stalin

Dr. Rabindranath Tagore

Jupiter: Exalted in 5th house

Bindus: 7

Result: Nobel Prize winner, poet, philosopher, composer. The blessings of the combination were fully conferred on him.

Jupiter exalted in the 5th (creativity, children, intelligence) with 7 bindus created one of India's greatest cultural icons.

Joseph Stalin

Jupiter: In 5th house

Bindus: 7

Result: Absolute ruler of the Soviet Union for nearly three decades. This is a powerful Raja Yoga.

Even without exaltation, Jupiter in the 5th with 7 bindus in the right kendra/trikona configuration created one of history's most powerful dictators.

Kesari Yoga Enhancement

Rule: A person born in Kesari Yoga will be endowed with wealth and happiness, provided Jupiter occupies the Moon's Navamsa with 5 or more bindus.

Kesari Yoga = Jupiter and Moon in mutual kendras (1-4-7-10 from each other). This yoga alone creates prosperity, but Ashtakavarga quantifies its strength.

Predicting Number of Children — Five Methods

This is the most complex and valuable section. Jupiter as Putrakaraka holds the key to predicting the number of children. Prasna Marga provides multiple methods, which B.V. Raman notes are "not only repetitive but also mutually contradictory."

Important Caveat: "A clever and experienced astrologer should be able to reconcile apparent contradictions without much difficulty if he remembers the fact that in astrology we have to deal with a number of factors." Use these methods in combination, not isolation.

Number of Children = Bindus in sign occupied by lord of 5th from Jupiter (after reduction)

How it works:

  1. Find Jupiter's position in the chart
  2. Count 5 signs from Jupiter (5th house from Jupiter)
  3. Find the lord of that sign
  4. In Jupiter's reduced Ashtakavarga, count bindus in the sign occupied by that lord

Raman's Caution: "In actual practice, this method has not been found to be quite satisfactory. Moreover, Ashtakavarga after reductions does not seem to yield as reliable results as Ashtakavarga before reduction. Hence it is better to take the figure in the 5th from Jupiter before reduction."

Conduct of children: The nature and conduct of children will be similar to the bindu-lords (planets contributing bindus).

Number of Children = Total bindus (after reduction) - Bindus in signs occupied by malefics

How it works:

  1. Total all bindus in Jupiter's Ashtakavarga after reduction
  2. Find signs occupied by malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu)
  3. Subtract bindus in those malefic-occupied signs
  4. Remainder = number of children
Standard Horoscope Example:

Total bindus after reduction: 11

Saturn's position: Has 1 bindu

Mars's position: Has 0 bindus

Calculation: 11 - 1 - 0 = 10 children

Actual: Native has 8 children living, 1 died, 1 abortion = 10 total. Correct!

This is the simplest and most straightforward method, and it worked perfectly in the Standard Horoscope.

Take bindus in 5th from Jupiter (before reduction)
- Deduct: Bindus from planets in debilitation, combustion, inimical places
+ Increase: Bindus from planets in exaltation, retrogression, own house
= Number of children

Enhancement rules (from Prasna Marga):

  • Planet in retrogression or exaltation: Multiply its bindu contribution by 3
  • Planet in own house, own Navamsa, or Vargottama: Multiply by 2
  • Planet in debilitation, combustion, or enemy's house: Deduct its bindu

Male vs Female children: Count bindus contributed by male planets (Sun, Mars, Jupiter) vs female planets (Moon, Venus) to determine gender ratio.

Standard Horoscope — Worked Example:

Step 1: 5th from Jupiter has 6 bindus (before reduction)

Step 2: Donors are Saturn, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Lagna

Step 3: Apply adjustments:

  • Saturn: In inimical sign → Deduct 1
  • Venus: In debility → Deduct 1
  • Sun: Vargottama → Double (1×2 = 2)
  • Mercury: Vargottama → Double (1×2 = 2)
  • Moon: No special condition → Keep as 1
  • Lagna: Keep as 1

Step 4: Calculate total:
Base: 6 - 2 (deductions) + 2 (Sun doubled) + 2 (Mercury doubled) = 8 children

Step 5: Gender breakdown:

  • Male planets: Sun (2) + Mercury (2, treated as male in masculine sign) + Lagna (1) = 5-6 males
  • Female planets: Venus (deducted) + Moon (1) = 1-2 females
  • Predicted: 6 males, 2 females

Result: This method also predicted 8 children correctly, with accurate gender distribution!

Method 24: Adopted Children

If the 5th from Jupiter (in Jupiter's Ashtakavarga) contains more bindus contributed by planets occupying Saturnine Rasis or Navamsas, one will have an adopted issue.

Saturnine Rasis = Capricorn, Aquarius. This suggests delay, karma, non-biological connection.

Comparative Approach

When multiple methods give different results:

  • Compare 5th from Jupiter and 5th from Lagna
  • Use the stronger position
  • Cross-check with overall 5th house strength
  • Consider Dasha periods for confirmation

The 5th House Prerequisite — Why Bindus Alone Aren't Enough

This is critically important. B.V. Raman emphasizes that Ashtakavarga methods only work when the 5th house is intrinsically strong.

"The Ashtakavarga system no doubt provides us with a clue to the determination of the number of issues, their sexes, and the probable times of their birth. But its application can be made only to charts in which the 5th house is intrinsically strong, indicating birth of children and the horoscopes of the parents answer the best for Beeja Sphuta and Kshetra Sphuta."

B.V. Raman

Counter-Example: High Bindus, Zero Children

Chart 17: Born 1903
Ashtakavarga Analysis:
  • 5th from Lagna: 6 bindus
  • 5th from Jupiter: 7 bindus
  • Prima facie excellent for children
5th House Reality:
  • Occupied by debilitated Sun (lord of 3rd)
  • Occupied by Mercury (lord of Lagna)
  • Aspected by Saturn (lord of 8th)
  • 5th lord debilitated in 4th with Rahu
  • Jupiter in asterism of afflicted Venus

Result: Native married four wives. Has zero children. The bindus in Ashtakavarga were completely overruled by the severe affliction to the 5th house itself.

Successful Example: Bindus + Strong 5th House

Chart 19
Ashtakavarga Analysis:
  • 5th from Jupiter: 2 bindus
  • 5th from Lagna: 4 bindus
  • Use 5th from Lagna (stronger)
5th House Reality:
  • 5th house not afflicted
  • 5th lord in 10th with Mars (9th lord)
  • General disposition favors children
Detailed Calculation (Method 26):

4 bindus in 5th from Lagna contributed by: Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Lagna

  • Mars: Not afflicted, not glorified → Count as 1
  • Jupiter: Not afflicted, not glorified → Count as 1
  • Venus: Exalted → Double → 2
  • Lagna: Aspected by malefic Mars → Discount

Total: 1 + 1 + 2 = 4, but considering Mars aspect on Lagna, surviving number = 3 to 5 children

Result: Native has 5 children. Correct prediction because 5th house was strong.

Beeja and Kshetra Sphuta

Raman refers to How to Judge a Horoscope: Chapter VIII for these technical calculations:

  • Beeja Sphuta (Seed) — Male fertility potential
  • Kshetra Sphuta (Field) — Female fertility potential

If either is severely afflicted, even excellent Ashtakavarga won't produce children.

Timing Birth of Children — Year, Month, Nakshatra, Lagna

Once number of children is determined, Ashtakavarga provides precise timing methods using Sodya Pinda and Kakshya techniques.

Method 27: Year of Birth (Jupiter's Transit — Nakshatra)

(Jupiter's Sodya Pinda × Bindus in 5th from Jupiter) ÷ 27 = Remainder
Count remainder from Aswini = Birth nakshatra
When Jupiter transits this nakshatra, birth occurs
Standard Horoscope Example:
  • Jupiter's Sodya Pinda: 124
  • Bindus in 5th from Jupiter: 6
  • Product: 124 × 6 = 744
  • Division: 744 ÷ 27 = 27 remainder 15
  • 15th nakshatra from Aswini: Swati
  • Prediction: When Jupiter transits Swati, a child is likely to be born

Method 28: Alternate Year Method

(Jupiter's Sodya Pinda × 7) ÷ 27 = Remainder
If Jupiter stronger in Navamsa than Rasi: count from Dhanishta
Otherwise: count from Aswini
Standard Horoscope Example:
  • Calculation: (124 × 7) ÷ 27 = Remainder 4
  • 4th from Aswini: Rohini
  • Prediction: Jupiter's transit of Rohini indicates birth

Method 29: Month of Birth (Solar Transit)

(Jupiter's Sodya Pinda × 4) ÷ 12 = Remainder
Count remainder from Aries = Month
Standard Horoscope Example:
  • Calculation: (124 × 4) ÷ 12 = 496 ÷ 12
  • Remainder: 4
  • 4th sign from Aries: Cancer
  • Prediction: When Sun transits Cancer (July 17 - August 16), birth of child

Method 30: Child's Birth Nakshatra

(Jupiter's Sodya Pinda × 7) ÷ 27 = Remainder
Count remainder from Jupiter's own nakshatra = Child's birth star
Standard Horoscope Example:
  • Jupiter occupies: Punarvasu
  • Remainder: 4 (from earlier calculation)
  • 4th from Punarvasu: Makha
  • Prediction: Child likely born in Makha nakshatra

Method 31: Child's Lagna (Ascendant)

(Jupiter's Sodya Pinda × 9) ÷ 12 = Remainder
Count remainder from Aries = Child's Lagna
Standard Horoscope Example:
  • Calculation: (124 × 9) ÷ 12 = 1116 ÷ 12
  • Remainder: 0 (or 12)
  • 12th sign: Pisces
  • Prediction: Child's Lagna will be Pisces

Method 32: Kakshya Method (Husband's Chart + Wife's Chart)

Kakshya: Each sign is divided into 8 equal parts. Each part (4° 22' 30") is ruled by Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Lagna respectively (in descending order of longitude).

1. Note lord of Kakshya occupied by Jupiter in husband's chart
2. Check if this planet contributed a bindu in 5th from Jupiter in wife's chart
3. When Jupiter transits that sign, birth occurs
Standard Horoscope Example:
  • In husband's chart: Jupiter occupies Sun's Kakshya
  • In Standard Horoscope (wife): Sun has contributed a bindu in 5th from Jupiter (Libra)
  • Prediction: When Jupiter transits Libra, birth of child

Method 33: Month via Navamsa

Note Navamsa occupied by lord of Kakshya (from husband's chart)
When Sun transits that Navamsa Rasi or its trines, birth occurs
Standard Horoscope Example:
  • Sun (Kakshya lord) occupies Capricorn Navamsa
  • Trines: Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo
  • Prediction: Birth when Sun transits Capricorn/Taurus/Virgo

Method 35: Month via Reduced Ashtakavarga

(Total bindus after reduction × Bindus in 5th from Jupiter) ÷ 12 = Remainder
Count from Aries = Month
Standard Horoscope Example:
  • Total bindus after reduction: 11
  • 5th from Jupiter (after reduction): 2
  • Calculation: (11 × 2) ÷ 12 = 22 ÷ 12
  • Remainder: 10
  • 10th sign (Capricorn): January 10 - February 13

Coordination with Dasha: These timing rules predict probable periods. Whether this relates to first issue or subsequent ones should be ascertained based on current directional influences (Dasha/Bhukti). When a particular Dasha shows birth of children, use Ashtakavarga to narrow down the timing.

Additional Jupiter Ashtakavarga Yogas

Beyond children and rulership, Jupiter's Ashtakavarga reveals many other life patterns:

Wealth and Longevity (Rule 1 & 6)

If Jupiter with 5 or more bindus occupies the 6th, 8th or 12th, there will be acquisition of wealth, destruction of enemies and good longevity.

In Standard Horoscope, Jupiter is in 6th with 7 bindus — highly fortunate in these matters.

Poverty Despite Raja Yoga (Rule 7)

One will always be in debts and sorrow even though born under Raja Yoga combinations if the Moon with 1 to 3 bindus is in the 6th or 8th from Jupiter.

Prominence Among Rulers (Rule 8)

When the lord of the Rasi occupied by Jupiter is exalted or in his own house, endowed with 5 or more bindus, one becomes prominent amongst rulers.

Lord of Sign in Kendra (Rule 11)

If the lord of the sign occupied by Jupiter is disposed in a quadrant or trine with 4 or more bindus in Jupiter's Ashtakavarga, the person becomes rich and fortunate in family life.

In Standard Horoscope: Mercury (lord of Jupiter's sign) is in a quadrant with 6 bindus.

Low Intelligence (Rule 14)

One will have ordinary intelligence and become unlucky if the Lagna, associated with 1 to 3 bindus, happens to fall in the 6th or 8th from Jupiter and the lord of Lagna is weak.

High Fortune (Rule 15)

If Jupiter or the lord of the 9th or 10th, associated with 7 or more bindus, is in a quadrant and the lord of the house occupied by either of the three is strong, the person becomes highly fortunate.

Standard Horoscope: Jupiter (7 bindus), Mercury lord of 9th (6 bindus) — native quite fortunate.

Treacherous Children (Rule 21)

If the lord of the house occupied by the lord of the 5th is debilitated possessing 1 to 3 bindus, the son will prove treacherous to the father. Conversely, if associated with 5+ bindus and aspected/conjoined Jupiter, a son who will be a beacon to the family is born.

Key Takeaways

  • Jupiter's Ashtakavarga is the most comprehensive planetary chapter, covering rulership, fortune, and children
  • 8 bindus in kendra/trikona + exaltation/own house = Raja Yoga — creates rulers and leaders
  • 7 bindus = great fortune and riches (Tagore, Stalin examples)
  • 5+ bindus is the threshold for Jupiter's benefic manifestation
  • 5 methods exist for predicting number of children — use in combination, not isolation
  • Method 25 (total minus malefic signs) is simplest and often most reliable
  • Method 26 (enhanced counting) is most complex but includes gender prediction
  • Ashtakavarga child prediction only works when 5th house is intrinsically strong — never ignore basic house analysis
  • High bindus + afflicted 5th house = zero children (Chart 17 proves this)
  • Timing methods use Sodya Pinda to predict year (nakshatra), month (solar transit), and even child's Lagna
  • Kakshya method requires both husband and wife's charts for precise timing
  • Coordinate Ashtakavarga timing with Dasha periods for accuracy
  • Jupiter in 6th/8th/12th with 5+ bindus = wealth, victory over enemies, longevity
  • Kesari Yoga enhanced when Jupiter in Moon's Navamsa with 5+ bindus
  • Check both 5th from Jupiter and 5th from Lagna — use the stronger position

Next: Part 11 explores Venus's Ashtakavarga — wife, marriage, comforts, and conjugal happiness. Venus's chapter focuses on marital bliss and material pleasures.
