How to Judge Horoscope Part 4: The Fourth House (Sukha Bhava) - A Modern Guide
A systematic exploration of B.V. Raman's classic text on horoscope judgment, transforming ancient wisdom into practical, modern insights for astrology students.
Part 4 of 13 • Fourth House • Topics: Maternal influences, Landed property, Formal education
The Fourth House—Sukha Bhava or the house of happiness—is the pivot around which revolve some of life's most foundational matters: mother, education, property, vehicles, and domestic peace. It represents our roots, our foundation, and our sense of inner contentment.
"The fourth has reference to mother, immovable property, education, vehicles and general happiness... The fourth, like the tenth, is a very important house and is in fact the pivot around which revolve some of the special events affecting the individual's life."
Understanding the Fourth House reveals a critical paradox: a person may be highly educated but lose their mother early, or command vast properties yet lack happiness. Raman addresses this challenge by teaching us to analyze each signification separately using the karaka (significator) system.
Significations of the Fourth House
The Fourth House, also called Sukha Bhava (House of Happiness) or Matru Sthana (House of Mother), represents our foundational securities and comforts.

Karakas (Specific Significators): Moon (mother), Jupiter (happiness), Venus (vehicles & ornaments), Mercury (education). By studying each karaka separately, we can differentiate results for different 4th house significations.
Results of 4th Lord in Different Houses

Family Status: According to strength of 4th lord in lagna: born in rich (strong), mediocre (middling), or poor (weak) family.

Sickly, generous, man of character. Acquires wealth by self-effort. Suffers from step-brothers and step-mother machinations.

Livelihood Location: Ekes out livelihood in distant places (if 7th is movable sign) or near birthplace (if 7th is fixed sign).
Becomes miserable. Father dies early. Either impotent or loose in sex-life. Likely to lose landed properties or face litigation.
Generally fortunate combination favoring happiness regarding father and properties.
Political success, expert chemist. Vanquishes enemies, makes personality felt by world. Loss of reputation possible if afflicted.
Self-made, generous, sickly. Mother fortunate (may have step-mother also). Favors success in selling/buying cattle and lands.

Satyacharya's Principle: Results become augmented or minimized according to the strength or weakness of the 4th lord. Moderately afflicted = somewhat tempered evil. Strongly afflicted = intensification of evil.

| Moon Position | In 4th with Saturn |
| 4th Lord (Venus) | In 7th with Mars/Mercury, hemmed by Sun/Ketu |
| Jupiter Aspect | Aspects 4th (some relief) |
Raman's Analysis:
Critical Affliction: Matrukaraka (Moon) in the 4th house itself, associated with Saturn = "not a happy combination." Moon owns 6th house = further affliction.
Planets Capable of Influencing 4th House (Mother):
- Moon — as Matrukaraka
- Saturn — as associate of Matrukaraka
- Jupiter — as aspecting Matrukaraka
- Venus — as 4th lord
- Mars & Mercury — as associating with 4th lord
Key Insight: Mars is maraka from Matrukaraka. Mercury is maraka for the sign held by Matrukaraka. Saturn joining Matrukaraka can destroy the mother. Native at birth was passing through sade-sathi.
Result: Mother's death occurred in Mars Dasa, Saturn Bhukti—the perfect combination of marakas and afflictors.
Key Lesson
To judge mother's longevity specifically, examine: (1) Moon as Matrukaraka, (2) 4th house strength, (3) 4th lord position. Even if house is fairly strong, if Matrukaraka is heavily afflicted (here: Moon in 4th with Saturn, owning 6th), early loss is indicated. The Dasa timing confirms through maraka connections.
Key Takeaways
- Use separate karakas for each signification—Moon (mother), Jupiter (happiness), Venus (vehicles), Mercury (education)
- 4th & 10th are pivotal houses—special events affecting life revolve around them
- Mother's longevity requires three-factor analysis—4th house strength, Moon position/strength, 4th lord disposition
- Parivarthana yogas are powerful—4th-10th exchange can make one a ruler; 4th-6th exchange gives lands from enemies
- Jupiter in 4th is exceptionally favorable—sure indication of prosperity in all 4th house matters
- Mars/Saturn in 4th generally problematic—unless they're Lagnadhipati or well-aspected
- Mental afflictions have specific signatures—Mars-Saturn in 4th (insanity), Rahu/Ketu-Saturn (hysteria)
- Property loss/gain times via Dasa—strong 4th lord with karaka in kendra/trikona = acquisition; in 6th/8th/12th = loss
"In judging any bhava, one's interpretation must be intelligent and skilled and not literal."
