Zodiacal Sign Properties — The 12 Personalities of the Sky

Hindu Predictive Astrology — Modern Reader's Guide

A comprehensive 30-part series based on B.V. Raman's classic 1938 textbook, adapted for modern students of Vedic astrology.

Part 5 · Series: Part I — Foundations

Every Sign Has a Personality

In the previous articles we learned the names and order of the twelve zodiacal signs, the nine planets, and the twenty-seven constellations. But knowing the names of the signs is only the beginning. Each zodiacal sign has certain peculiarities attributed to it by the ancient Maharishis — qualities that determine how planets behave when placed in them, what kind of events they produce, and how they interact with each other in a horoscope.

Think of the twelve signs as twelve distinct environments. A planet placed in Aries behaves very differently from the same planet placed in Cancer — not because the planet itself has changed, but because the environment has changed. The sign provides the context, the mood, the terrain. Understanding sign properties is therefore essential before you can begin to read any chart.

B.V. Raman devotes Chapter V of Hindu Predictive Astrology to cataloguing these properties systematically. In this article, we will work through every major classification: mobility, gender, element, rising type, fruitfulness, and the profound concept of the Kala Purusha — the Cosmic Person whose body is mapped across the zodiac.

The Three Modes: Moveable, Fixed, and Common Signs

The most fundamental classification of the twelve signs is by their mode of action — how they express energy. The ancient texts divide all signs into three groups of four:

Moveable Signs

Chara Rasis

  • Aries (1)
  • Cancer (4)
  • Libra (7)
  • Capricorn (10)

These signs initiate action. They represent change, movement, ambition, and new beginnings. Planets in moveable signs produce dynamic, restless energy — events happen quickly but may not last.

Fixed Signs

Sthira Rasis

  • Taurus (2)
  • Leo (5)
  • Scorpio (8)
  • Aquarius (11)

These signs consolidate and sustain. They represent stability, determination, and persistence. Planets here produce lasting results but resist change — effects are slow to manifest but enduring.

Common Signs

Dwiswabhava Rasis

  • Gemini (3)
  • Virgo (6)
  • Sagittarius (9)
  • Pisces (12)

Also called "dual" signs, these partake of both moveable and fixed natures. They represent adaptability, flexibility, and transition. Planets here produce moderate, fluctuating results.

Notice the elegant pattern: the moveable signs occupy the four cardinal points of the zodiac (signs 1, 4, 7, 10), the fixed signs follow immediately after (signs 2, 5, 8, 11), and the common signs complete each quadrant (signs 3, 6, 9, 12). This triple rhythm repeats four times around the circle, ensuring a balanced distribution of energies.

Practical Application

When multiple planets cluster in moveable signs in a horoscope, the native tends to be active, ambitious, and frequently changing circumstances. A predominance of fixed signs suggests stubbornness and endurance. Common sign dominance indicates versatility but also indecision. This simple classification already tells you a great deal about a person's temperament.

Gender: Odd and Even Signs

The twelve signs alternate between masculine (odd-numbered) and feminine (even-numbered) qualities. This is not about biological gender — it describes the mode of expression:

Odd Signs — Masculine / Cruel

Aries (1), Gemini (3), Leo (5), Libra (7), Sagittarius (9), Aquarius (11)

These signs are assertive, outgoing, and direct in their action. They are called "cruel" (krura) not because they are malicious, but because they act forcefully and without hesitation. Planets in odd signs tend to express themselves boldly.

Even Signs — Feminine / Mild

Taurus (2), Cancer (4), Virgo (6), Scorpio (8), Capricorn (10), Pisces (12)

These signs are receptive, nurturing, and indirect in their approach. They are called "mild" (saumya) because they work through patience and absorption rather than direct force. Planets here express themselves more subtly.

The Four Elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water

Each zodiacal sign represents one of the four fundamental elements of nature. This is one of the most important classifications in all of astrology, because the element determines the basic temperament of the sign. The Sanskrit terms are Agnitatwa (fire), Bhutatwa (earth), Vayutatwa (air), and Jalatatwa (water).

Fire

Agnitatwa

Aries

Leo

Sagittarius

Energy, enthusiasm, courage, aggression, leadership. Fire signs are active, passionate, and self-motivated.

Earth

Bhutatwa

Taurus

Virgo

Capricorn

Practicality, materialism, stability, endurance. Earth signs are grounded, methodical, and concerned with tangible results.

Air

Vayutatwa

Gemini

Libra

Aquarius

Intellect, communication, social connection, ideas. Air signs are mental, versatile, and relationship-oriented.

Water

Jalatatwa

Cancer

Scorpio

Pisces

Emotion, intuition, sensitivity, depth. Water signs are receptive, nurturing, and driven by feeling rather than logic.

The elements follow a repeating cycle: Fire, Earth, Air, Water — starting from Aries and proceeding through the zodiac. Each element appears exactly three times, forming a triplicity — a triangle of three signs that share the same elemental nature. Signs of the same element naturally harmonize with each other, while signs of opposing elements (fire vs. water, earth vs. air) often create tension.

Why Elements Matter: When you eventually learn to judge horoscopes, the elemental balance of a chart tells you about a person's fundamental temperament. A chart dominated by fire signs suggests an energetic, impulsive person. Water-sign dominance points to emotional depth and sensitivity. An absence of earth signs may indicate impracticality. These are broad strokes, but they form the foundation of character analysis.

The Master Classification Table

The following table consolidates all the major classifications for each sign into a single reference. This is one of the most useful tables in all of foundational astrology — bookmark it, print it, or memorize it.

# Sign Mode Gender Element Rising Fertility
1 Aries Moveable Masculine Fire Prushthodaya
2 Taurus Fixed Feminine Earth Prushthodaya
3 Gemini Common Masculine Air Sirodaya Barren
4 Cancer Moveable Feminine Water Prushthodaya Fruitful
5 Leo Fixed Masculine Fire Sirodaya Barren
6 Virgo Common Feminine Earth Sirodaya Barren
7 Libra Moveable Masculine Air Sirodaya
8 Scorpio Fixed Feminine Water Sirodaya Fruitful
9 Sagittarius Common Masculine Fire Prushthodaya
10 Capricorn Moveable Feminine Earth Prushthodaya
11 Aquarius Fixed Masculine Air Sirodaya
12 Pisces Common Feminine Water Ubhayodaya Fruitful

Rising Types: How Signs Ascend

An important but often overlooked classification concerns how signs rise above the eastern horizon. This matters for Muhurtha (electional astrology) and for determining when certain signs are most powerful during the day-night cycle.

Sirodaya
Head-Rising Signs

Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius

These signs rise head-first over the horizon. They are powerful during the day — except Gemini, which is powerful at night despite being a head-rising sign.

Prushthodaya
Hind-Part Rising Signs

Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius, Capricorn

These signs rise from behind — their hind parts appear first. They are powerful during the night. Gemini, though head-rising, is also counted as powerful at night.

Ubhayodaya
Both-Ways Rising

Pisces (only)

Pisces rises from both ends simultaneously, making it powerful both day and night. This unique quality reflects the dual nature of this sign — the two fish swimming in opposite directions.

Long and Short Ascension

Not all signs take the same amount of time to rise over the horizon. In the northern hemisphere, the signs from Cancer through Sagittarius are called signs of long ascension — they take longer to rise. The signs from Capricorn through Gemini are signs of short ascension — they rise more quickly.

This distinction is reversed for the southern hemisphere. The practical consequence is that the Ascendant (Lagna) spends more time in some signs than others during the course of a day, which affects the statistical distribution of birth charts. You are more likely to find people born with a long-ascension sign as their Ascendant than a short-ascension one.

Fruitful and Barren Signs

Certain signs are classified as fruitful — they are fertile and productive, especially relevant when judging questions about children, progeny, and creative output:

  • Fruitful signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces — all three are water signs, which makes intuitive sense: water is the element of nourishment and growth.
  • Barren signs: Gemini, Leo, Virgo — these signs are considered infertile and are examined carefully when the question of progeny arises in a horoscope.

If the 5th house (the house of children) falls in a barren sign, and its lord is also placed in a barren sign, and no fruitful planets aspect the 5th house, this constitutes a strong indication of difficulty in having children. This is one of the most direct applications of sign classification in predictive astrology.

Signs of Voice

An interesting minor classification: Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius, and the first half of Sagittarius are called signs of voice. When the Ascendant or the 2nd house (house of speech) falls in one of these signs with benefic influences, it can indicate talent in oratory, singing, writing, or other forms of verbal expression. This classification becomes especially relevant in Prasna (horary astrology), where the astrologer looks for signs of voice to determine whether a querent will receive favorable news.

The Kala Purusha: The Cosmic Person

One of the most profound and beautiful concepts in Vedic astrology is the Kala Purusha — the "Cosmic Person" or "Time-Person." This concept maps the twelve zodiacal signs onto the human body, creating a direct correspondence between the macrocosm (the zodiac) and the microcosm (the human form). As the ancient principle states: "Yatha pinde tatha brahmande" — as in the body, so in the universe.

"The zodiac is conceived as the body of the Cosmic Person — Kala Purusha. Just as the human body has different organs performing different functions, each sign of the zodiac governs a specific part of this cosmic body."

B.V. Raman, Hindu Predictive Astrology, Ch. V
The Kala Purusha Body Map
1 Aries Head and brain
2 Taurus Face, mouth, and throat
3 Gemini Arms, shoulders, and hands
4 Cancer Chest and breast
5 Leo Stomach and upper abdomen
6 Virgo Waist and intestines
7 Libra Lower abdomen and kidneys
8 Scorpio Generative organs
9 Sagittarius Thighs and hips
10 Capricorn Knees and joints
11 Aquarius Ankles and calves
12 Pisces Feet and toes

The Kala Purusha mapping is not merely symbolic — it has direct practical applications. When you are judging health matters in a horoscope, the sign that occupies the 6th house (house of disease) and the signs occupied by malefic planets indicate which body parts are vulnerable. If Saturn occupies Aries in the 6th house, for example, this can indicate chronic headaches or conditions affecting the brain. If Mars afflicts Scorpio, it points to problems in the generative system.

Medical astrology (Vaidya Jyotisha) relies heavily on the Kala Purusha concept. We will explore this in much greater depth in Part 29 of this series, which is devoted entirely to medical astrology.

House Classifications: Kendras, Trikonas, and More

Beyond the properties of the signs themselves, Raman also catalogues the classification of houses (counted from the Ascendant). These classifications are among the most frequently used concepts in practical horoscopy. Every time you read a chart, you will need to know which houses are angular, which are trinal, and which are cadent.

Classification Sanskrit Name Houses Significance
Quadrants Kendras 1, 4, 7, 10 The pillars of the horoscope. Planets in Kendras are strong and prominent. These are the most powerful positions for any planet.
Trines Trikonas 5, 9 The most auspicious houses. Lords of trines are always benefic regardless of their natural nature. The 1st house is both a Kendra and a Trikona.
Cadent Houses Panaparas 2, 5, 8, 11 Houses that follow the Kendras. They provide support and resources. Planets here have moderate strength.
Succedent Houses Apoklimas 3, 6, 9, 12 Houses that precede the Kendras. Generally weaker positions, though the 9th (being a Trikona) is excluded from this weakness.
Growth Houses Upachayas 3, 6, 10, 11 Houses of improvement. Malefic planets placed in Upachayas give good results — they grow stronger over time. Even natural malefics like Saturn and Mars do well here.
Key Insight: The relationship between Kendras and Trikonas is the foundation of all yoga (planetary combination) analysis. When the lord of a Kendra and the lord of a Trikona are connected — by conjunction, aspect, or mutual exchange — powerful Raja Yogas are formed, indicating wealth, status, and success. This single principle generates most of the beneficial combinations discussed in later chapters.

Putting It All Together

You now possess a vocabulary of sign classification that will serve you throughout your study of Vedic astrology. Let us summarize the practical significance of each classification:

  • Mode (Moveable/Fixed/Common) tells you how events unfold — quickly, slowly, or with fluctuation.
  • Gender (Odd/Even) tells you the style of expression — assertive or receptive.
  • Element (Fire/Earth/Air/Water) tells you the temperament — energetic, practical, intellectual, or emotional.
  • Rising type (Sirodaya/Prushthodaya/Ubhayodaya) tells you when a sign is most powerful — day or night.
  • Fruitfulness tells you about fertility and productivity.
  • Kala Purusha tells you which body part is governed.
  • House classification tells you the structural role of each position in the chart.

When you read a horoscope, every planet sits in a sign, and that sign carries all of these properties simultaneously. A planet in Aries is in a moveable, masculine, fiery, hind-part-rising sign that governs the head. If Aries is the 1st house, it is also a Kendra and a Trikona. If Aries is the 10th house, it is a Kendra and an Upachaya. All of these layers of meaning combine to produce the final interpretation.

Study Method

Do not try to memorize all these classifications at once. Instead, take each sign and work through its properties one by one. Start with your own Ascendant sign — what is its mode? Its element? Its gender? Its body part? Once you can describe your own sign completely, move on to the next. Within a few practice sessions, these classifications will become second nature.

Looking Ahead

With the properties of the zodiacal signs firmly in hand, we are ready to tackle the specialized vocabulary of Hindu astrology. In the next article — Part 6: Astrological Terminology — we will define the essential technical terms that every student must know: Lagna, Bhava, Rasi, Graha, aspects, dignities, and the crucial concept of planetary ownership. These terms form the working language of the astrologer, and without them, the advanced chapters will remain opaque.

Key Takeaways
  • Signs are classified by mode (moveable, fixed, common), gender (masculine, feminine), element (fire, earth, air, water), and rising type.
  • The water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are fruitful; Gemini, Leo, and Virgo are barren.
  • The Kala Purusha maps the zodiac onto the human body from head (Aries) to feet (Pisces).
  • Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) and Trikonas (5, 9) are the most important house positions.
  • Malefic planets do well in Upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11).
