If the horoscope is a house, the twelve bhavas (houses) are its rooms. Each room serves a specific purpose. The first house is the entrance hall — it's what people see first, your physical body and personality. The seventh house is the drawing room where you receive your spouse. The tenth house is your office. The twelfth house is the meditation chamber where you prepare for the final journey.
This chapter is the most important reference section in the entire series. While previous chapters taught you how to calculate a horoscope and understand planetary strengths, this chapter teaches you what to look for in those calculations. It is a systematic exploration of all twelve houses — their significations, planetary combinations, and predictive methods.

The Twelve Bhavas — Overview
Hindu astrology divides the horoscope into twelve houses, each representing a specific area of life. The houses are numbered counter-clockwise from the Ascendant (Lagna), which is always the 1st house.
Angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are the strongest — they represent the four pillars of life: self, home, relationships, career. Succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11) are moderate — they represent resources and support. Cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12) are the weakest — they represent transitions and difficulties. Planets in angular houses are more powerful than those in cadent houses.

The 1st house (Lagna) is the most important house in the horoscope. It represents the native's physical body, health, personality, and overall life direction. Clinical Observation: In my practice, I've observed that the 1st house is like the foundation of a building. No matter how strong the other houses are, if the 1st house is weak (lord debilitated, afflicted by malefics, in dusthana houses 6/8/12), the native will struggle throughout life. Always strengthen the Lagna first through remedies.
The 2nd house indicates accumulated wealth, family life, manner of speech, and the native's eating habits. It also governs the face and right eye. Interestingly, it's called a maraka sthana (death-inflicting house) because it represents the cessation of life force.

The Maraka Principle
The 2nd and 7th houses are called maraka sthanas (death-inflicting houses). During the Dasa-Bhukti of the lords of these houses, especially if they're afflicted, the native may face life-threatening situations. This doesn't mean death is certain — it means extra caution is needed during those periods. The 2nd house represents the cessation of life because it's the 12th (loss) from the 3rd (longevity).
The 3rd house represents siblings (especially younger ones), courage, short-distance travel, and mental initiative. It also governs the right ear and shoulders. A strong 3rd house gives bravery, good relationships with siblings, and success in communication-related fields.

How to Judge the 4th House
The 4th house is one of the four angular houses (kendras) and represents the foundation of emotional life — mother, home, education, and peace of mind. It's the opposite of the 10th house (career) and represents what happens in private, at home, away from public view.

Lord of 4th exalted or in own sign: Long-lived mother, good relationship, maternal happiness.

Raman notes that Saturn + Moon in the 4th gives two simultaneous results: (1) the native becomes an author early in life, and (2) the mother dies early. This is because Saturn brings discipline and structure (authorship) but also delays and separation (mother's early death). This is a classic example of how one combination can give both positive and negative results.

How to Judge the 5th House
The 5th house is the house of creativity and progeny. It represents children, intellectual capacity, speculative gains, romance before marriage, and past life merit (purva punya). A strong 5th house indicates blessed children, creative talents, and good fortune.

Clinical Observation: The 5th house also represents the native's father in a secondary sense (9th house is primary). If the 5th house is afflicted while the 9th is strong, the father may be alive but the relationship is distant or cold. If both are afflicted, the father's health and the relationship both suffer.
The 6th house is one of the dusthanas (evil houses) along with the 8th and 12th. It represents diseases, enemies, debts, and obstacles. However, a strong 6th house lord paradoxically gives victory over enemies, ability to overcome diseases, and success in competitive fields (law, military, medicine).

The 6th house is one of the upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11) which improve over time. This means that diseases, debts, and enemies that seem overwhelming in youth gradually diminish with age. Malefics in upachaya houses are actually considered beneficial because they help overcome obstacles through struggle and discipline.
The 7th house is directly opposite the 1st house (self) and represents "the other" — primarily the spouse, but also business partners, open enemies, and foreign lands. It's the most important house for marriage and relationships. A strong 7th house indicates a happy marriage, successful partnerships, and diplomatic abilities.

The symbolism is that the 7th represents "going to meet the other" — which can mean meeting a spouse or meeting death (the ultimate other).
The 8th house is the most mysterious and feared house in the horoscope. It represents death, longevity, sudden events, occult knowledge, legacies, and hidden matters. However, it's not purely evil — it also represents transformation, research ability, and deep psychological insight.

Raman provides detailed rules for predicting the cause of death based on the planet occupying the 8th house:
Mars in 8th house: Death by accidents, weapons, fire, violence, surgery complications, hemorrhage.
Mercury in 8th house: Death by brain fever, nervous disorders, airship accidents (plane crashes), mental breakdown.
Moon in 8th house: Death by watery diseases (dropsy, edema), drowning, chest problems, tuberculosis.

When studying the 8th house, astrologers must exercise extreme caution and compassion. Never predict the exact time of death — this is forbidden in classical texts and violates astrological ethics. Death predictions can cause severe psychological harm and violate free will.
