Not all planets treat every ascendant the same way. A planet that brings fortune to one rising sign may bring hardship to another. This is one of the most counterintuitive yet crucial insights in Vedic astrology: planetary beneficence and maleficence are relative, not absolute .

Jupiter, the "great benefic," can become a source of difficulty for Taurus and Gemini ascendants. Venus, normally associated with luxury and harmony, causes serious problems for Cancer and Leo natives. Mars, often feared as a natural malefic, becomes the most auspicious planet for Leo and Cancer risings.

Before diving into the specifics for each ascendant, it helps to understand why a planet becomes beneficial or harmful for a particular rising sign. The answer lies in the houses the planet rules.

House Lordship Determines Planetary Nature

Every planet governs one or two signs, and therefore one or two houses counted from any given ascendant. The quality of these houses determines whether the planet acts as a friend or foe:

Example: For Aries ascendant, Mars rules the 1st house (Aries) and the 8th house (Scorpio). The 1st is a Kendra and Trikona — highly beneficial. The 8th is a Dusthana — harmful. Mars's lordship is mixed, so Mars becomes neutral to mildly beneficial for Aries, not a major Yogakaraka.

Contrast this with Cancer ascendant, where Mars rules the 5th (Scorpio, a Trikona) and the 10th (Aries, a Kendra). Both are excellent houses. Mars becomes the Rajayogakaraka for Cancer — the single most powerful planet for bringing success, recognition, and prosperity.

The Yogakaraka Principle

A Yogakaraka is a planet that simultaneously rules a Kendra (angle) and a Trikona (trine). This dual rulership is exceptional because Kendras provide stability and manifestation power, while Trikonas provide fortune and dharmic support. When one planet controls both, it becomes a complete package — capable of delivering success, happiness, and righteousness all at once.

There are only a few scenarios where a single planet can be a Yogakaraka:

• Saturn for Taurus and Libra (rules 9th and 10th for Taurus; 4th and 5th for Libra)
• Mars for Cancer and Leo (rules 5th and 10th for Cancer; 4th and 9th for Leo)
• Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius (rules 5th and 10th for Capricorn; 4th and 9th for Aquarius)

For other ascendants, the Yogakaraka role is achieved through combinations of two planets — one ruling a Kendra and another ruling a Trikona. When these two planets conjoin or mutually aspect each other in favorable houses, they form a Rajayoga — a king-making combination.

Aries Ascendant (Mesha Lagna)

Benefic Planets: Jupiter (rules 9th and 12th) and the Sun (rules 5th) are most auspicious. Jupiter as the 9th lord is the planet of fortune, despite also ruling the 12th. The Sun, ruling the 5th house (a Trikona), brings children, creativity, and intelligence.

Malefic Planets: Saturn (rules 10th and 11th) is the worst planet — it rules two Upachaya houses that are neither Trikona nor pure Kendra. Mercury (rules 3rd and 6th) is also harmful, bringing disease and enmity. Venus (rules 2nd and 7th) is a double maraka — the most dangerous for health and longevity.

Yogakaraka: Jupiter alone acts as Yogakaraka due to its 9th house rulership.

Rajayoga: The combination of Jupiter and the Sun in favorable houses produces excellent Rajayoga, as both are natural benefics ruling Trikonas (5th and 9th).

Maraka Exception: Venus, despite being the double maraka (2nd and 7th lord), will not directly kill the native. However, Saturn will cause death even though it doesn't rule maraka houses — this is because Saturn rules the 10th (a maraka house by secondary designation in some systems) and is a natural malefic with hostile lordship.

Taurus Ascendant (Vrishabha Lagna)

Most Auspicious: Saturn (rules 9th and 10th) is the single most powerful planet for Taurus. It is a perfect Yogakaraka — simultaneously ruling a Trikona (9th) and a Kendra (10th). Saturn alone can produce Rajayoga without needing another planet's help.

Malefic Planets: Jupiter (rules 8th and 11th), Venus (rules 1st and 6th), and the Moon (rules 3rd) are all considered harmful or neutral at best. Jupiter's rulership of the 8th (a severe Dusthana) makes it a hidden enemy. Venus ruling the 6th brings health issues and enemies.

Yogakaraka: Saturn alone.

Rajayoga: Saturn by itself, or Saturn combined with Mercury (9th lord with 2nd/5th lord) in good houses.

Maraka Note: Mars and Jupiter are the maraka lords (2nd and 7th respectively). Both can cause death, though Jupiter's role is more hidden due to its 8th house rulership overlaying the 11th.

Gemini Ascendant (Mithuna Lagna)

Most Beneficial: Venus (rules 5th and 12th) is the most beneficial planet. The 5th house rulership (Trikona) gives Venus great power to produce intelligence, children, and fortune despite the 12th house association with loss.

Malefic Planets: Mars (rules 6th and 11th), Jupiter (rules 7th and 10th), and the Sun (rules 3rd) are all harmful. Mars brings disease and enmity (6th lord). Jupiter, despite being a natural benefic, rules the 7th (maraka) and creates obstacles. The Sun rules the 3rd (Upachaya), which is less harmful but not supportive.

Rajayoga: Venus and Saturn together in good signs. Venus rules the 5th (Trikona) and Saturn rules the 9th (Trikona), making their combination a double-Trikona Rajayoga. Alternatively, Venus and Mercury (Ascendant lord) together also produce excellent results.

Maraka Exception: The Moon (2nd lord) will not kill the native, despite being a maraka lord. Jupiter (7th lord), however, will cause death.

Cancer Ascendant (Kataka Lagna)

Most Beneficial: Jupiter (rules 6th and 9th) and Mars (rules 5th and 10th) are both highly beneficial. Mars is the Rajayogakaraka , ruling both a Trikona (5th) and a Kendra (10th) — making it the single most important planet for Cancer natives.

Malefic Planets: Venus (rules 4th and 11th) and Mercury (rules 3rd and 12th) are harmful. Venus's 11th house rulership (gains, but an Upachaya and mild Dusthana) weakens it. Mercury brings loss (12th lord).

Yogakaraka: Mars is the pure Yogakaraka.

Rajayoga: Mars and Jupiter together produce the most powerful Rajayoga for Cancer. Mars (5th and 10th lord) + Jupiter (9th lord) = Trikona lords combining with Kendra lord for complete success.

Maraka Exception: The Sun (2nd lord) will not cause death. Saturn (7th and 8th lord) is the more dangerous maraka and can cause death.

Leo Ascendant (Simha Lagna)

Most Auspicious: Mars (rules 4th and 9th) is the single most auspicious planet for Leo. It rules both a Kendra (4th) and a Trikona (9th), making it a perfect Yogakaraka. Mars's Dashas and transits bring tremendous success and fortune.

Malefic Planets: Saturn (rules 6th and 7th), Venus (rules 3rd and 10th), and Mercury (rules 2nd and 11th) are all problematic. Saturn as 6th lord brings disease; Venus's 10th house rulership is mixed (Kendra but also associated with Venus's natural softness conflicting with career demands); Mercury as 2nd lord is a maraka.

Yogakaraka: Mars alone.

Rajayoga: Jupiter (5th lord) and Mars (9th and 4th lord) together produce powerful Rajayoga. Both are Trikona lords, and Mars adds Kendra strength.

Maraka Exception: Saturn (7th lord) will not cause death despite being a maraka. Mercury (2nd lord) and Venus can cause health crises, but Saturn's harmful effects are more through disease (6th lordship) than direct maraka action.

Virgo Ascendant (Kanya Lagna)

Most Powerful: Venus (rules 2nd and 9th) is the most powerful planet for Virgo. Despite ruling the 2nd (a maraka house), Venus's 9th house rulership (Trikona of fortune) makes it an overall benefic and capable of producing great results.

Malefic Planets: Mars (rules 3rd and 8th) and the Moon (rules 11th) are harmful. Mars's 8th house rulership is particularly dangerous — it brings sudden upheavals, accidents, and chronic disease. The Moon as 11th lord is mildly problematic but not severely so.

Rajayoga: Mercury (Ascendant lord) and Venus (9th lord) together produce excellent Rajayoga. This combination enhances intelligence, communication skills, fortune, and dharmic success.

Maraka Exception: The Sun (12th lord, not a maraka) will not cause death. Venus (2nd lord) and Saturn (6th lord, not a classic maraka but rules the 5th too) can cause health issues, but the primary maraka danger comes from Saturn (6th lord bringing disease).

Libra Ascendant (Tula Lagna)

Yogakaraka: Saturn alone (rules 4th and 5th). Saturn becomes a perfect Yogakaraka for Libra, ruling a Kendra (4th) and a Trikona (5th) simultaneously. Saturn's periods bring property, education, children, intelligence, and general prosperity.

Malefic Planets: Jupiter (rules 3rd and 6th), the Sun (rules 11th), and Mars (rules 2nd and 7th) are inauspicious. Jupiter's 6th lordship is particularly bad — bringing disease, enmity, and legal troubles. Mars is a double maraka (2nd and 7th lord).

Rajayoga: Moon (10th lord) and Mercury (9th lord) together in good signs produce excellent Rajayoga. This combination brings career success, fortune, and recognition. Alternatively, Saturn alone can produce Rajayoga by virtue of its dual Kendra-Trikona lordship.

Maraka Exception: Mars, despite being the double maraka (2nd and 7th lord), will not kill the native. Instead, Jupiter and the Sun are more likely to cause serious health crises or death due to their Dusthana lordships.

Scorpio Ascendant (Vrishchika Lagna)

Most Beneficial: Jupiter (rules 2nd and 5th) is the most beneficial planet. Despite ruling the 2nd (a maraka house), Jupiter's 5th house rulership (Trikona) makes it an overall benefic capable of bringing wealth, children, and intelligence.

Malefic Planets: Mercury (rules 8th and 11th) and Venus (rules 7th and 12th) are evil. Mercury's 8th lordship brings sudden changes, occult entanglements, and chronic health issues. Venus as 7th lord is a maraka and as 12th lord brings loss and expenditure.

Rajayoga: The Sun (10th lord) and the Moon (9th lord) together produce powerful Rajayoga. This combination of Kendra and Trikona lords brings authority, recognition, fortune, and dharmic success. This is one of the classic Rajayogas mentioned in many texts.

Maraka Exception: Jupiter (2nd lord) will not cause death despite being a maraka lord. Venus (7th lord) is the more dangerous maraka and can cause death during its Dasha periods.

Sagittarius Ascendant (Dhanus Lagna)

Best Planet: Mars (rules 5th and 12th) is the best planet for Sagittarius. The 5th house rulership (Trikona) makes Mars a powerful benefic despite the 12th house association. Mars brings children, intelligence, past-life merit, and spiritual inclinations.

Malefic Planets: Venus (rules 6th and 11th) is decidedly evil, bringing disease (6th) and excessive material desires (11th) that lead to spiritual downfall. Mercury (7th and 10th lord) is complex — the 10th lordship is good (Kendra) but the 7th is maraka.

Rajayoga: The Sun (9th lord) and Mars (5th lord) together produce excellent Rajayoga. Both are fire planets ruling fire houses (Trikonas), creating a harmonious combination that brings fame, authority, courage, and dharmic success.

Maraka Exception: Saturn (2nd and 3rd lord) will not cause death. Venus (6th and 11th lord) will cause death — not through maraka lordship but through its severe Dusthana rulership bringing chronic disease and enemies.

Capricorn Ascendant (Makara Lagna)

Most Powerful: Venus (rules 5th and 10th) is the most powerful and beneficial planet for Capricorn. It is a perfect Yogakaraka — ruling both a Trikona (5th) and a Kendra (10th). Venus's Dashas bring career success, children, intelligence, and creative achievements.

Malefic Planets: Mars (rules 4th and 11th), Jupiter (rules 3rd and 12th), and the Moon (rules 7th, a maraka) are all problematic. Mars's 11th lordship and Jupiter's 12th lordship bring excessive gains followed by loss. The Moon as 7th lord is a direct maraka.

Rajayoga: Venus and Mercury (9th lord) together produce powerful Rajayoga. Mercury rules the 9th (fortune) and Venus rules the 5th and 10th, creating a triple combination of Trikona and Kendra lords — one of the strongest Rajayogas possible.

Maraka Note: The Moon (7th lord) is the primary maraka. Saturn (Ascendant lord) can also cause health issues when afflicted, though it is not a direct maraka.

Aquarius Ascendant (Kumbha Lagna)

Most Auspicious: Venus (rules 4th and 9th) is the most auspicious planet for Aquarius. It is a perfect Yogakaraka, ruling a Kendra (4th) and a Trikona (9th) simultaneously. Venus brings property, mother's happiness, fortune, father's blessings, and dharmic success.

Malefic Planets: Jupiter (rules 2nd and 11th) and the Moon (rules 6th) are harmful. Jupiter as 2nd lord is a maraka, and the Moon's 6th lordship brings disease and enmity. Mercury (5th and 8th lord) is mixed — the 5th is excellent but the 8th is dangerous.

Rajayoga: Venus and Mars (3rd and 10th lord) together produce Rajayoga. Mars rules the 10th (Kendra) and Venus rules the 9th (Trikona), creating a Kendra-Trikona combination. This pairing brings career success through self-effort, courage, and dharmic action.

Maraka Note: Jupiter (2nd lord) and the Sun (7th lord) are both maraka lords. The Moon (6th lord) can cause chronic disease but is not a direct maraka.

Pisces Ascendant (Meena Lagna)

Most Auspicious: The Moon (rules 5th) and Mars (rules 2nd and 9th) are both highly auspicious. Mars is especially powerful, ruling a Trikona (9th) despite also ruling the 2nd (maraka). The Moon as 5th lord brings children and intelligence.

Most Powerful: Mars is the most powerful planet overall for Pisces due to its 9th house rulership.

Malefic Planets: Saturn (rules 11th and 12th), Venus (rules 3rd and 8th), the Sun (rules 6th), and Mercury (rules 4th and 7th) are all inauspicious. Venus's 8th lordship is particularly dangerous. Mercury as 7th lord is a maraka. Saturn's 12th lordship brings loss and isolation.

Rajayoga: Mars and the Moon together, or Mars and Jupiter (Ascendant lord and 10th lord) together produce powerful Rajayoga. Mars (9th lord) + Moon (5th lord) = double Trikona combination. Mars (9th) + Jupiter (10th) = Trikona-Kendra combination.

Maraka Exception: Mars (2nd lord) will not cause death despite being a maraka lord. Mercury (7th lord) is the primary maraka and can cause death.

Step-by-Step Application

1. Identify the ascendant. This is the foundation. All benefic/malefic designations flow from the rising sign.
2. Mark the Yogakaraka planet. Circle or highlight this planet in the chart. Its position, strength, and Dasha periods deserve special attention.
3. Check for Rajayoga combinations. Are the specified Rajayoga planets conjunct, mutually aspecting, or in Kendra/Trikona from each other? If yes, this chart has special success potential.
4. Assess benefic planet strength. Are the benefic planets well-placed (in good houses, exalted, in own sign, strong in Navamsa)? Strong benefics deliver results fully. Weak benefics struggle even with good intentions.
5. Assess malefic planet damage. Are the malefic planets afflicting important houses or planets? A malefic planet in the 7th house can damage marriage. A malefic aspecting the 10th lord can obstruct career. Knowing which planets are malefic helps you pinpoint problem areas.
6. Evaluate Dasha periods. When interpreting Vimshottari Dasha, the Dasha of a benefic planet (especially the Yogakaraka) brings good results. The Dasha of a malefic planet brings obstacles, loss, or health issues. The maraka planets' Dashas are especially dangerous for health.

Example Case Study: Cancer Ascendant

Consider a Cancer ascendant chart where Mars is in the 10th house (Aries, its own sign) and Jupiter is in the 9th house (Pisces, its own sign). This is a textbook Rajayoga:

• Mars is the Yogakaraka (rules 5th and 10th).
• Jupiter is highly beneficial (rules 9th).
• Mars in the 10th (Kendra) gives career strength, authority, and recognition.
• Jupiter in the 9th (Trikona) gives fortune, dharma, father's blessings, higher learning.
• Mars aspects Jupiter (4th aspect from 10th to 9th, though weak), and Jupiter aspects Mars (5th aspect from 9th to 1st, but not directly; however both are strong in their own houses).

Prediction: This person will achieve significant career success (Mars in 10th in own sign as Yogakaraka). They will be fortunate, ethical, and respected (Jupiter in 9th in own sign). During Mars Dasha, especially Mars-Jupiter sub-period, they will experience a major rise in status, possibly through government service, military, law enforcement, or engineering (Mars's domains). During Jupiter Dasha, they will gain through teaching, spiritual pursuits, legal matters, or international connections (Jupiter's domains).
