Hindu Predictive Astrology Part 14: Judgment of a Horoscope — Grand Principles

Hindu Predictive Astrology — Complete Modern Guide

This article lays down the meta-rules that govern all prediction. Before you look at specific yogas or house results, you must understand which planets are your allies and which are your enemies — and this changes for every ascendant.

Part 14 of 31 • Core Predictive Principles • Covers: Book Chapter XVI — Judgment of a Horoscope

The notable triumphs in Hindu astrology are entirely due to the great scrutiny the planetary influences are subjected to — the relative values of good and evil sources of strength of different planets and houses.

Before diving into specific chart analysis, Raman establishes the universal principles that apply to every horoscope. These rules determine which planets are functionally benefic or malefic for a given ascendant — a concept distinct from their natural benefic/malefic status covered in Part 5.

The Grand Lordship Rules

The following principles are the bedrock of all horoscope judgment. Memorise them:

1 The lords of trines (5th and 9th) are ALWAYS auspicious and produce good.
Trines are the most benefic houses. Their lords carry that auspiciousness regardless of their natural nature.

2 When BENEFICS own quadrants (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th), they become evil.
This is the most counter-intuitive rule in Vedic astrology. Jupiter and Venus, as lords of kendras, lose their natural beneficence and can actually harm. Jupiter and Venus owning quadrants become very inauspicious — especially when in the 2nd or 7th, where they can inflict death.

3 When MALEFICS become lords of quadrants, they invariably become good.
Saturn, Mars, and Sun owning kendras shed their natural maleficence. Quadrant lordship converts malefics into functional benefics.

4 The lords of the 2nd and 12th remain neutral — their results depend on association.
They give good results when conjoined with favourable planets, bad results when associated with unfavourable ones.

5 The lord of the 8th, if also the lord of the 1st (or conjoined with a benefic), becomes good.
The 8th lord is normally evil, but when the same planet rules the ascendant, the 1st-house lordship overrides the 8th.

6 Lords of the 3rd, 6th, 8th, and 11th do evil and cause miseries.
These are the Dusthana (evil house) lords plus the 11th. They create debts, diseases, obstacles, and excess.

7 Mars owning the 10th does NOT become good merely from that.
Exception to rule 3. Mars needs additional 5th lordship to become Yogakaraka. 10th lordship alone is insufficient.

Graded beneficence among kendra-owning benefics: Mercury as lord of a quadrant is less malicious than Jupiter and Venus. The Moon as quadrant lord is less malicious than Mercury. So the harm from kendra lordship is: Jupiter/Venus (most) > Mercury > Moon (least).

Rajayoga: The Combination for Success

The Master Formula for Rajayoga

The lords of quadrants and trines in conjunction, without any other bad aspects, become extremely powerful in producing good results. This is the foundation of Rajayoga — the combination for political success, fame, and prosperity.

If the lords of the 9th and 10th houses exchange places, they produce much good. This is one of the most powerful Rajayogas possible.

Why this works: Trine lords (5th/9th) are always auspicious (Rule 1). Quadrant lords (1st/4th/7th/10th) gain power proportionally (Rule 2/3). When a trine lord conjoins a quadrant lord, the auspiciousness of the trine combines with the power of the quadrant — creating a compound effect that neither alone possesses. This is the engine that drives the most spectacular successes in life.

Power ranking of lordship (from most to least powerful):

Strongest Good
Lords of 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th
(Kendras)
Always Good
Lords of 5th, 9th
(Trikonas)
Evil / Misery
Lords of 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th
(Dusthanas + 11th)

Courage, Self-Respect and Prowess

The greatest assets of a man — apart from wealth and fame — are self-respect, courage and prowess. These are assessed through:

  • Mars — the primary karaka (significator) for courage and martial spirit
  • The 3rd house and its lord — controls valour, initiative, siblings
  • The 11th house lord — supports gains and fulfilment of desires
  • Jupiter — adds dignity and makes the person self-reliant, not dependent on others

Mars must occupy the 10th for good courage. Mars and the lord of the 3rd must be in a friendly house and in the Bhavamadhya (mid-point of a house), not on a Bhavasandhi (junction between two houses).

Marriage Indicators

Venus gets the "Commander-in-Chief" post over matrimonial alliances and the 7th house controls marriage in general:

Favourable for Marriage
  • Venus in favourable positions → marital felicity with a single wife
  • Venus in the house of Jupiter, or lord of 1st/9th (in Rasi or Navamsa) → chaste, loving, happy wife
  • 7th house occupied only by benefics
  • For women: Moon in the navamsa of Jupiter → loyal and chaste
Unfavourable for Marriage
  • Afflicted Venus → more than one legal wife
  • 7th house occupied by malefics
  • For women: Moon in navamsa of Saturn or Mars → problems with loyalty
  • Mars in the 8th house → widowhood (unless counteracted)

Debts, Diseases and Enemies: The 3rd, 6th and 11th Lords

The lords of the 3rd, 6th, and 11th play an important part in causing debts, diseases, and ill-health. The best feature in a horoscope is when these lords remain isolated and unassociated with any other planet:

LordEffect When Powerful & Badly Placed
3rd lordCauses debts and diseases in a sudden spurt. Ill-timed courage and headlong spirit.
6th lordCauses egotism and misanthropy. Special control over debts and diseases. Exercises poor discretion.
11th lordWhen very powerful → anarchic qualities. Excess and extremism.

Mars and Saturn in unfriendly signs give rise to excess of evil in matters of debts and diseases. Delicate circumstances involving life and honour can be overcome — but not when these two occupy hostile positions.

Father, Mother and Children: Karakas and Houses

RelationshipHouseKaraka (Significator)
Father9th house☉ Sun
Mother4th house☽ Moon
Children5th house (Putrasthana)♃ Jupiter (Putrakaraka)

When the lords of the 4th, 5th, and 9th and the Moon, Jupiter, and Sun are well situated in favourable navamsas, prosperity for mother, children, and father is invariably indicated.

Danger Combinations from Raman's Observations

  • Moon + Saturn in the 4th, without favourable aspect → death of mother within one year of the child's birth
  • Jupiter + Saturn in the 5th → children are harmed or short-lived
  • Sun + Saturn in the 9th → early death of father
  • Mercury and Mars in the 5th → children short-lived

Jupiter in the ascendant is the best gift in a horoscope. The native gets dutiful children and long-lived parents. This single placement is one of the most powerful protective factors for the entire family.

Quick Longevity Check

Raman concludes the chapter with this concise longevity principle:

Long life may be predicted if the lords of the 1st and 8th and Saturn are in good positions and have the aspect of Jupiter. Jupiter's protection over the ascendant lord, the 8th lord, and Saturn is the single strongest indicator of longevity.

Key Takeaways

  1. Trine lords (5th/9th) are ALWAYS auspicious — this is the most reliable rule in Vedic astrology
No exceptions. Regardless of their natural nature, trine lords produce good.
  2. Natural benefics (Jupiter/Venus) owning quadrants become EVIL — the counter-intuitive "Kendradhipatya Dosha"
In the 2nd/7th, they can even inflict death. Graded harm: Jupiter/Venus > Mercury > Moon.
  3. Natural malefics owning quadrants become GOOD
Saturn, Mars, and Sun as kendra lords shed maleficence. Exception: Mars needs 5th lordship too, not just 10th.
  4. Rajayoga = conjunction of quadrant lords + trine lords, without bad aspects
Exchange of 9th/10th lords is one of the most powerful Rajayogas. This is the engine of spectacular success.
  5. Venus governs marriage; Sun→father; Moon→mother; Jupiter→children
Corresponding houses: 7th (marriage), 9th (father), 4th (mother), 5th (children). Saturn conjoining any of their karakas in the relevant house is dangerous.
  6. Jupiter in the ascendant is the single most protective placement in any horoscope
Dutiful children, long-lived parents, dignity, self-reliance, and cancellation of many evils.

In Part 15, we apply these grand principles to each of the 12 Ascendants individually — identifying the specific Yogakaraka, the most auspicious planets, the most dangerous planets, and the death-inflicting agents for Aries through Pisces. This is the practical lookup table you'll use every time you read a chart.
