Hindu Predictive Astrology Chapter 5: Peculiarities of the Zodiacal Signs

"Each zodiacal sign has certain peculiarities attributed to it by ancient Maharishis. For instance, each sign represents some element in nature, such as fire, air, earth and water."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 5

Not all zodiac signs behave the same way. Each sign has been classified by the ancient sages (Maharishis) according to multiple overlapping systems: mobility, gender, element, ascension duration, fertility, and rising direction. These classifications are not decorative -- they are working tools used in every horoscope reading.

This short but dense chapter is essentially a classification reference. When you later read about how to judge a horoscope (Chapters XVI-XIX), you will constantly refer back to these categories to determine the nature and strength of signs in a chart. Raman begins his chapter with the straightforward observation that every sign carries specific attributes handed down by the Maharishis, and then proceeds to lay out six distinct classification systems in rapid succession.

What makes this chapter so valuable is its practical density. In barely two pages of original text, Raman compresses an entire taxonomy that astrologers use daily. A student who memorises these classifications will find that later chapters on horoscope judgement, marriage compatibility, and progeny analysis become dramatically easier to follow. Think of this chapter as a codebook -- one you will keep returning to throughout your study of Vedic astrology.

In the sections that follow, we will unpack each classification system in detail, explain the reasoning behind it, and show how it is applied in actual chart interpretation. We will also add modern context where helpful, while staying true to Raman's original framework.

1. Moveable, Fixed and Common Signs

The most fundamental classification divides the twelve signs into three groups of four, based on their quality of action. This threefold division -- called the Guna classification -- determines how a sign expresses its energy: through initiation, persistence, or adaptation.

"Moveable signs (Chara Rasis) are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Fixed signs (Sthira Rasis) are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Common signs (Dwiswabhava Rasis) are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 5

Moveable (Chara)

Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
These signs indicate activity, change, movement, and initiative. People with prominent Chara signs tend to be dynamic and restless. They start new projects easily but may struggle with follow-through. In mundane astrology, Chara signs often coincide with periods of political change and social upheaval.

Fixed (Sthira)

Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
These signs indicate stability, persistence, determination, and resistance to change. People with prominent Sthira signs tend to be steady and stubborn. They excel at completing what others start. Fixed signs in key chart positions suggest endurance, loyalty, and occasionally an inability to let go of the past.

Common (Dwiswabhava)

Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces
These are dual-natured signs that combine qualities of both moveable and fixed. They indicate adaptability and flexibility. The Sanskrit name Dwiswabhava literally means "dual nature," reflecting their ability to shift between action and stability as circumstances demand.

Pattern to memorise: The moveable signs are all at the start of each season (the four cardinal signs). The fixed signs follow them. The common signs come last in each seasonal group. This pattern repeats: Moveable-Fixed-Common, Moveable-Fixed-Common, four times around the zodiac.

Practical application: When judging a horoscope, the quality of the Lagna (ascendant) sign immediately tells you something about the native's fundamental approach to life. A Chara Lagna person acts first and thinks later. A Sthira Lagna person thinks carefully before acting and then does not change course easily. A Dwiswabhava Lagna person can do both, depending on the situation. This classification is also vital in Prashna (horary astrology), where a Chara sign on the ascendant suggests a quick resolution, a Sthira sign suggests delay, and a Dwiswabhava sign suggests a mixed outcome.

Quality Sanskrit Signs Key Trait Seasonal Position
Moveable Chara Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn Initiative, change Start of each season
Fixed Sthira Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius Persistence, stability Middle of each season
Common Dwiswabhava Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces Adaptability, duality End of each season

2. Odd and Even Signs (Gender Classification)

The signs alternate between odd (masculine) and even (feminine) in a simple alternating pattern around the zodiac. This is one of the oldest classification systems and is found in virtually every astrological tradition worldwide.

"All odd signs are cruel and masculine and all even signs are mild and feminine."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 5
Classification Sign Numbers Signs Nature
Odd (Masculine) 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius Cruel, assertive, active, extroverted
Even (Feminine) 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces Mild, receptive, passive, introverted

Note that Raman uses the word "cruel" (krura) in a technical sense here, not as a moral judgement. In Vedic astrological terminology, "cruel" means forceful, outward-directed, and assertive. Likewise "mild" (saumya) means gentle, inward-directed, and receptive. Neither is inherently good or bad.

Practical application: This classification is used in determining the sex of a child from the birth horoscope, as well as in character analysis. A horoscope dominated by odd signs suggests an assertive, outgoing personality, while one dominated by even signs suggests a more gentle, receptive temperament. In Prashna Shastra (horary astrology), the gender of the Lagna sign and the Moon sign can indicate whether the answer to a question involves a male or female person. When multiple planets occupy odd signs, the native tends toward independence and leadership; when multiple planets occupy even signs, the native tends toward cooperation and diplomacy.

3. The Four Elements (Tatwas)

Each sign is associated with one of four elemental energies. These elements describe the fundamental nature and temperament of the sign. The Sanskrit term Tatwa means "essence" or "principle," and each element represents a different mode of being in the physical and psychological world.

"We have an account of fiery signs (Agnitatwa Rasis), viz., Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are earthy signs (Bhutatwa Rasis). Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are airy signs (Vayutatwa Rasis). And finally Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are classified as watery signs (Jalatatwa Rasis)."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 5
Element Sanskrit Signs Qualities Body Constitution
Fire Agnitatwa Aries, Leo, Sagittarius Energy, enthusiasm, courage, aggression Pitta (bilious), lean build, high metabolism
Earth Bhutatwa Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn Practicality, stability, materialism Kapha-Vata mix, sturdy build, methodical
Air Vayutatwa Gemini, Libra, Aquarius Intellect, communication, socialisation Vata (windy), nervous energy, quick mind
Water Jalatatwa Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces Emotion, intuition, sensitivity Kapha (phlegmatic), soft features, emotional depth

Cross-referencing elements with qualities: The real power of these classification systems emerges when you combine them. For example, Aries is a Moveable Fire sign -- this gives it the most dynamic and aggressive character of all the fire signs. Leo is a Fixed Fire sign -- steady, regal, persistent fire. Sagittarius is a Common Fire sign -- adaptable, philosophical fire that can shift between contemplation and action. Each of the twelve signs can be described as a unique combination of quality and element, giving twelve distinct temperamental profiles.

Fire Earth Air Water
Moveable Aries Capricorn Libra Cancer
Fixed Leo Taurus Aquarius Scorpio
Common Sagittarius Virgo Gemini Pisces

This cross-reference table is one of the most useful tools an astrology student can memorise. It allows instant recall of each sign's core attributes and shows why, for example, Scorpio (Fixed Water) has such a different character from Pisces (Common Water) despite both being water signs. Scorpio holds emotions in with intense fixity, while Pisces lets emotions flow and shift freely.

4. Long and Short Ascension

Not all signs take the same amount of time to rise above the eastern horizon. Due to the tilt of the Earth's axis and the observer's latitude, some signs cross the ascendant quickly while others linger. This has direct practical consequences for birth chart calculation.

"Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius are signs of long ascension and those of short ascension are Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus and Gemini."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 5
Classification Signs Approximate Rising Time (at Indian latitudes)
Long Ascension Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius More than 2 hours each
Short Ascension Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini Less than 2 hours each

Why this matters: A sign of long ascension occupies the Lagna for a longer period. This means that more people born during those hours will share the same Lagna sign. Conversely, signs of short ascension flip through the Lagna quickly, making the exact birth time more critical for people born under them. Even a few minutes' error in birth time can change the Lagna when a short ascension sign is rising.

Raman includes an important footnote that modern readers should note: the classification of long and short ascension signs is reversed for locations in the Southern Hemisphere. What takes long to rise in India takes a short time to rise in Australia and vice versa. This is a consequence of the obliquity of the ecliptic relative to the observer's horizon at different latitudes.

5. Fruitful, Barren and Rising Direction

Raman lists several additional sign classifications that are used in specific predictive contexts. The fruitful/barren distinction is essential for questions about children, while the rising direction (Sirodaya/Prushtodaya) affects a sign's strength during day versus night.

"Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are fruitful and Gemini, Leo and Virgo are barren."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 5
Classification Signs Predictive Use
Fruitful Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces (water signs) Favourable for children, fertility, growth
Barren Gemini, Leo, Virgo Difficult for children, suggests fewer offspring
Sirodaya (Head-rising) Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius Powerful during daytime (except Gemini)
Prushtodaya (Hind-rising) Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius, Capricorn Powerful during nighttime (plus Gemini)
Ubhayodaya (Both-rising) Pisces Powerful both day and night
Signs of Voice Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius, first half of Sagittarius Connected to speech, singing, oratory

Fruitful vs barren: These classifications are particularly important in questions about children. If the 5th house (house of children) falls in a fruitful sign, it is a positive indicator for having children; if in a barren sign, it may suggest difficulties. The same principle applies to the 7th house (spouse) when assessing the partner's ability to bear children. Notice that all three fruitful signs are water signs -- water is universally associated with fertility and creation across cultures.

"These details would be highly useful in the delineation of character and mental disposition."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 5

Sirodaya vs Prushtodaya: The rising direction of a sign tells you when it is most powerful. A Sirodaya (head-rising) sign gains strength during the daytime because it "faces forward" as the Sun crosses the sky. A Prushtodaya (hind-rising) sign gains strength during the night. This distinction is used in Muhurta (electional astrology) to choose auspicious timings. For instance, if you need a strong Lagna for a daytime event, choose a Sirodaya sign. For a nighttime ceremony, choose a Prushtodaya sign.

Signs of voice: Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius and the first half of Sagittarius are associated with speech and communication. When these signs are prominent in a horoscope -- especially in the 2nd house (speech) or the 10th house (profession) -- the native may have talent in public speaking, singing, teaching, writing, or any vocation that depends on verbal expression.

6. House Categories: Kendras, Trikonas and More

Raman concludes this chapter with the classification of the twelve houses (bhavas) into functional groups. These groupings are used constantly in horoscope judgement and form the structural backbone of all predictive analysis. Understanding which houses belong to which category is a prerequisite for judging planetary strengths, yogas, and dashas.

"Quadrants (Kendras) are 1, 4, 7 and 10. Trines (Trikonas) are 5 and 9. Cadent houses (Panaparas) are 2, 5, 8 and 11. Succeedent houses (Apoklimas) are 3, 6, 9 and 12. Upachayas are 3, 6, 10 and 11."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 5
Category Sanskrit Houses Significance
Quadrants Kendras 1, 4, 7, 10 The four pillars of the chart; planets here are strong and active
Trines Trikonas 5, 9 The most auspicious houses; bring luck, dharma, and merit from past lives
Cadent houses Panaparas 2, 5, 8, 11 Houses that follow the Kendras; moderate strength
Succeedent houses Apoklimas 3, 6, 9, 12 Houses that precede the Kendras; weakest positional strength (9th is also a Trikona)
Growth houses Upachayas 3, 6, 10, 11 Malefics do well here; results improve over time with age

The Kendra-Trikona principle: The relationship between Kendras and Trikonas is the single most important concept in Vedic horoscope judgement. A planet that rules both a Kendra and a Trikona becomes a Yogakaraka -- the most powerful benefic in the chart, capable of conferring wealth, status, and success during its dasha period. This principle will be explored in detail in Chapter XVII on Key-Planets for Each Sign.

Why Upachayas matter: The Upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11) have a unique property. Unlike other houses, malefic planets placed in Upachayas actually produce good results. Mars in the 3rd gives courage, Saturn in the 6th helps defeat enemies, and Rahu in the 11th brings gains through unconventional means. Furthermore, the significations of Upachaya houses tend to improve as the native grows older -- a person's courage (3rd), ability to handle adversaries (6th), career status (10th), and income (11th) all tend to grow with age and experience.

The hierarchy of house strength: Planets in Kendras are the strongest, followed by those in Panaparas, and then those in Apoklimas. This positional strength is called Sthana Bala and is one of the six components of Shadbala (sixfold strength), the comprehensive planetary strength calculation system of Vedic astrology.

7. Putting It All Together: How These Classifications Work in Practice

The real value of Chapter 5 becomes apparent when you begin combining these classification systems to build a detailed picture of any given sign. Each system adds a new layer of information, and the resulting composite description is remarkably nuanced for something derived entirely from categorical attributes.

Consider Cancer as an example. It is: Moveable (dynamic, initiating), Even/Feminine (receptive, gentle), Water (emotional, intuitive), Long Ascension (takes a long time to rise), Fruitful (favourable for children), and Prushtodaya (hind-rising, powerful at night). Combining these, we get a sign that initiates through emotional connection rather than force, is nurturing and fertile, and gains strength after sunset. This perfectly matches the traditional description of Cancer as the sign of the mother, the home, and emotional security.

Now consider Aquarius. It is: Fixed (persistent, stubborn), Odd/Masculine (assertive, outward-directed), Air (intellectual, communicative), Short Ascension (rises quickly), Sirodaya (head-rising, powerful during day), and a Sign of Voice (connected to speech). This gives us a sign that stubbornly pursues intellectual ideals, communicates assertively, and excels in daytime activities involving speech and ideas. This matches the traditional description of Aquarius as the sign of reformers, thinkers, and social visionaries.

Key Takeaways

  • Three qualities: Every sign is Moveable (Chara), Fixed (Sthira), or Common (Dwiswabhava). This pattern repeats four times around the zodiac in exact sequence.
  • Gender alternation: Odd signs (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11) are masculine and assertive; even signs (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) are feminine and receptive. This simple alternation has deep implications for character analysis and sex determination.
  • Four elements: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Combining element with quality gives each sign its unique character.
  • Ascension duration: Signs from Cancer to Sagittarius take long to rise; from Capricorn to Gemini they rise quickly. This is reversed in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Fertility: Water signs are fruitful; Gemini, Leo and Virgo are barren -- essential for judging questions about children and progeny.
  • Rising direction: Sirodaya signs are powerful by day, Prushtodaya by night, and Pisces (Ubhayodaya) is powerful both day and night. Use this in Muhurta for timing events.
  • Kendras and Trikonas: The most important house groupings. Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) give strength; Trikonas (5, 9) give auspiciousness. A planet ruling both becomes a Yogakaraka -- the supreme benefic in the chart.
  • Upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11): Growth houses where malefic planets produce good results and where life improves with age.
