Hindu Predictive Astrology Chapter 34: Gocharaphala or Results of Transits - A Modern Guide

Hindu Predictive Astrology — Modern Reader's Guide

A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology textbook by B.V. Raman, first published in 1938.

Chapter 34 of 36 · Topics: Transit effects of planets, Gochara rules, Vedha (obstruction) points, Ashtakavarga integration

While the birth chart captures planetary positions at a fixed moment, the planets never stop moving. Gocharaphala — the results of transits — describes what happens as planets move through the twelve signs relative to the birth Moon. This is one of the most practically useful predictive techniques in Vedic astrology, because it reveals the effects of the current period and allows the astrologer to time events with considerable precision.

A birth chart is like a photograph — it captures a single instant. But life is a motion picture. The planets continue their orbits, and as they pass through different signs relative to your natal Moon, they activate different areas of life. Raman opens this chapter by establishing why Gochara matters alongside Dasa/Bhukti analysis.

"Calculations must be made not only in regard to the Dasas and Bhuktis ruling at any particular period but also due consideration should be bestowed on results of transits or Gochara movements of planets. Gochara enables us to predict the effects of the current period."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34

This dual approach — combining the time-lord system (Dasa/Bhukti) with real-time planetary movement (Gochara) — is what separates superficial predictions from genuinely accurate forecasting. Think of the Dasa system as the season of your life and transits as the daily weather within that season. A Jupiter Dasa sets the overall tone of expansion and growth, but a difficult Saturn transit during that period can bring temporary setbacks within that broader positive phase.

1. The Moon as Reference Point

In Gochara analysis, everything is counted from the birth Moon. The sign occupied by the Moon at birth is called the Janma Rasi. Each planet's transit through the 12 signs from this point produces specific results. This is fundamentally different from Western astrology, which typically counts transits from the Ascendant or from the natal position of the same planet.

"In predicting Gochara results, the Moon and the birth constellation play a prominent part. Mark the position of the Moon at the time of birth. The sign, in which the birth Moon is placed, is called the Janma Rasi."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34

Why the Moon and not the Ascendant? In Vedic philosophy, the Moon represents the mind (Manas). Since our experience of events is filtered through the mind — how we feel about what happens to us — the Moon becomes the natural anchor for understanding how transiting planets affect our subjective experience. The Ascendant governs the physical body and outward circumstances, but the Moon governs how we process and react to events internally.

The speed of results varies dramatically by planet. Slow-moving planets produce the most significant and lasting effects, while fast-moving ones create brief fluctuations:

PlanetTransit Duration per SignResult PeriodSignificance
Saturn~2.5 yearsTriennial (3-year)Most powerful, life-altering
Jupiter~1 yearYearlyMajor opportunities or setbacks
Rahu/Ketu~1.5 years18 monthsKarmic shifts, obsessions
Mars~45 daysMonthlyEnergy, conflicts, action
Sun~30 daysMonthlyAuthority, health, vitality
Venus~30 daysMonthlyRelationships, comfort, finances
Mercury~25 daysMonthlyCommunication, intellect, trade
Moon~2.25 daysDailyMood, daily fluctuations

"The triennial results may be ascertained from Saturn, the yearly effects from Jupiter, the monthly results from other planets and the daily influences from the Moon."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34

An important practical detail: Raman notes that the Sun and Mars produce their results when passing through the first 10 degrees of a sign. This means their transit effects are concentrated in the early portion of their passage through any sign, rather than being evenly distributed across all 30 degrees. This is a subtle but valuable timing refinement that many practitioners overlook.

2. The Sun's Transit Through 12 Houses

Raman provides a detailed house-by-house breakdown of the Sun's transit effects. The Sun represents authority, vitality, prestige and government matters. Its transit through favourable houses brings recognition, health and success, while unfavourable transits produce loss of prestige, health troubles and obstacles.

"When the Sun traverses through the Rasi occupied by the Moon, the person suffers from loss of wealth, loss of prestige, sickness and will have many obstacles and aimless travels."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34
HouseNatureEffects of Sun's Transit
1stBadLoss of wealth, loss of prestige, sickness, obstacles, aimless travels
2ndBadLoss of wealth, deceit, financial worries
3rdGoodAdvent of money, happiness, relief from diseases, recognition from superiors, honours and courage
4thBadDiseases, attacks from opponents, no peace of mind, pressure from creditors
5thBadMental agitation, ill-health, embarrassment and accidents
6thGoodRelease from sorrows, destruction of enemies, peace of mind
7thBadWearisome travelling, colic and anal troubles, humiliation, sickness
8thBadQuarrels with friends, diseases, high blood pressure, official displeasure
9thBadDanger, humiliation, dependency, disappointment, separation
10thGoodAccomplishment of desires and plans, success in all undertakings
11thGoodHonour, health, wealth and success
12thBadSorrow, loss, quarrels and ill-health

Notice the pattern: the Sun is favourable only in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses — the upachaya houses (houses of growth). These are houses where even natural malefics produce positive results, because they represent areas of life that benefit from aggressive, assertive energy. The 3rd house governs courage and initiative; the 6th governs overcoming enemies and disease; the 10th governs career achievement; and the 11th governs gains and fulfilment of desires.

3. Transit Results for All Seven Planets

Raman provides exhaustive house-by-house results for each planet. The following master table summarises which houses are favourable and unfavourable for each planet's transit from the Moon. This is the single most important reference table in Gochara analysis.

PlanetGood Houses (from Moon)Bad Houses
Sun3, 6, 10, 111, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12
Moon1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 112, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12
Mars3, 6, 10, 111, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12
Mercury2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 111, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12
Jupiter2, 5, 7, 9, 111, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12
Venus1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 126, 7, 10
Saturn3, 6, 111, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12

Several patterns emerge from careful study of this table:

  • Venus is the most benign in transit — favourable in 9 out of 12 houses, bad in only 3. This reflects Venus's natural tendency to bring comfort and pleasure.
  • Saturn is the most restrictive — favourable in only 3 houses (3, 6, 11). Saturn's transits through the remaining 9 houses bring hardship, delays and suffering.
  • Mercury has a unique pattern — favourable in even-numbered houses (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) plus 11. This is unusual because Mercury produces good results even in the traditionally difficult 8th house.
  • Jupiter, the great benefic, is surprisingly restrictive in transit — good in only 5 houses. This is a common source of confusion; Jupiter's benefic nature in the birth chart does not automatically translate to good transit results everywhere.

Rahu and Ketu follow the patterns of Saturn and Mars respectively:

"Rahu transiting the 12th house produces results similar to those of Saturn, and Ketu to those of Mars."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34

Detailed Transit Effects: Mars Through 12 Houses

Mars is the planet of energy, aggression, conflict and courage. Its transit effects are sharp and often physical in nature — fevers, blood-related issues, quarrels and accidents feature prominently. Raman's descriptions are vivid:

HouseNatureEffects of Mars's Transit
1stBadTroubles, general suffering
2ndBadDispleasure of authorities, quarrels, enemies, bilious and windy complaints
3rdGoodGain of objects, pleasure from children, good health, riches, new clothes
4thBadFever, digestive troubles, blood discharges, depravity of character
5thBadEnemies increase, fresh diseases, mental peace completely absent
6thGoodRelief from troubles, riches, cheerfulness, independent life
7thBadQuarrels with spouse, eye troubles, stomach-ache, indigestion
8thBadBlood discharge, loss of wealth, disgrace, mental worry

10thGoodAmounts due will be realised, success in ventures
11thGoodBusiness improvement, success attends ventures
12thBadExpenses, diseases of the eye, bilious complaints, wife-related troubles

Detailed Transit Effects: Jupiter Through 12 Houses

Jupiter's transit results are particularly important because Jupiter spends about one year in each sign. Raman provides especially poetic descriptions for Jupiter, reflecting the planet's connection to wisdom, children, wealth and spiritual merit.

HouseNatureEffects of Jupiter's Transit
1stBadLoss of wealth and intelligence, quitting place, many quarrels
2ndGoodNo enemies, enjoyment of wealth and relationships
3rdBadQuitting place, obstacles in work
4thBadTroubles from kinsmen, patience, resignation, delight in nothing
5thGoodServants, prosperity, sons, houses, gold, gems, good qualities
6thBadAffliction at heart, no delight in agreeable things
7thGoodGood bed, excellent company, wealth, good meals, conveyance, intelligence
8thBadImprisonment, diseases, heavy grief, fatigue of journey, serious illness
9thGoodEfficiency at work, influence, sons, success, wealth and gain
10thBadQuitting place, loss of health and wealth
11thGoodReturn to country, recovery of health and wealth
12thBadGrief in return journey

Detailed Transit Effects: Saturn Through 12 Houses

Saturn's transits are the most feared in Vedic astrology, and for good reason. Spending roughly 2.5 years in each sign, Saturn's influence is prolonged and deep. The first, second and twelfth house transits from the Moon constitute the dreaded Sade Sati (seven-and-a-half year period), while the transit through the 4th and 8th houses is called Kantaka Sani and Ashtama Sani respectively.

"When Saturn passes through the sign occupied by the Moon at the time of his birth, such person will suffer from poison and from fire, will quit his kinsmen, will suffer from imprisonment and torture, will travel to foreign lands and live with his friends there, will suffer miseries, loss of wealth and of sons."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34
HouseNatureEffects of Saturn's Transit
1stBadPoison, fire, separation from kinsmen, imprisonment, foreign travel, loss of wealth and sons
2ndBadLoss of beauty and comfort, weakness, wealth from others but short-lived
3rdGoodWealth, servants, camels, buffaloes, elephants; influential, happy, free from diseases, defeats enemies
4thBadSeparation from friends, wealth and wife; constant suspicion, never happy
5thBadSeparation from sons and wealth, quarrels
6thGoodFreed from enemies and diseases, enjoys company of women

9thBadAll evils of 8th house plus neglect of daily duties
10thBadGets work but suffers loss of wealth, learning and fame
11thGoodBecomes cruel but gets women and wealth
12thBadMuch grief

Detailed Transit Effects: Venus Through 12 Houses

Venus, the planet of luxury, relationships and artistic sensibility, is remarkably benign in transit. Raman assigns favourable results to Venus in 9 of the 12 houses — more than any other planet. This reflects Venus's fundamentally harmonious nature.

HouseNatureEffects of Venus's Transit
1stGoodExcellent perfumes, flowers, clothes, houses, bed, meals and relationships
2ndGoodSons, wealth, grain, presents from king, prosperous family, gems
3rdGoodInfluential, wealthy, respectable, new clothes, enemies ruined

4. Vedha — The Obstruction Points

This is one of the most critical — and most neglected — concepts in transit analysis. Vedha is an obstructing force: even when a planet transits a favourable house, its good effects are blocked if another planet simultaneously occupies the corresponding Vedha point. Conversely, when a planet transits an unfavourable house, the evil is mitigated if another planet occupies the corresponding obstruction point.

"The present-day astrologers seldom consider these minute details with the result that most of the predictions made by them are being falsified, thus bringing the fair name of astrology into utter disgrace."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34

Raman is unusually blunt here. He argues that the failure of modern astrologers to apply Vedha is directly responsible for inaccurate predictions, which in turn damages the credibility of astrology itself. This is not an obscure footnote — it is, in Raman's view, the primary reason why transit-based predictions fail.

"The Sun, for instance, transiting the 11th, 3rd, 10th and 6th signs from the radical Moon is supposed to yield good results. The smooth flowing of such good results will be obstructed if there are any other planets simultaneously transiting the 5th, 9th, 4th and 12th signs from the Moon respectively."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34

Here are the complete Vedha points for all seven planets. The "Good House" column shows where the planet produces favourable results; the "Vedha Point" column shows which house, if occupied by another planet simultaneously, blocks those good results:

Important Exceptions to Vedha

  • No Vedha occurs between the Sun and Saturn. These two planets, father and son in mythology, do not obstruct each other's transit effects. If the Sun is in the 11th (good) and Saturn is in the 5th (Vedha point), the Sun's good effects are NOT blocked.
  • No Vedha occurs between the Moon and Mercury. These two fast-moving planets are exempt from mutual obstruction. Mercury in the Vedha point of the Moon does not block the Moon's good transit, and vice versa.

The practical implication is profound: before declaring any transit "good" or "bad," the astrologer must check every other planet's position to see if Vedha is in play. This turns a simple lookup into a multi-variable analysis — which is exactly why most practitioners skip it, and exactly why, according to Raman, their predictions fail.

5. Worked Example: Applying Gochara with Vedha

Raman provides a concrete example showing how to evaluate transits for a real horoscope, integrating Gochara positions, Ashtakavarga bindus and Vedha analysis. This example demonstrates what happens when multiple factors are combined — the result was death, confirming that transit analysis is not merely academic but carries life-and-death significance.

PlanetTransit HouseBindusGocharaVedha?Net Result
Sun11th4GoodNo VedhaGood
Moon11th6GoodMars in 8th causes VedhaBad
Mars8th4BadN/A (already bad)Bad
Mercury11th5GoodSaturn in 12th causes VedhaBad
Jupiter9th4GoodNo VedhaGood
Venus1st4GoodMars in 8th causes VedhaBad
Saturn12th3BadMercury in 11th mitigates slightlyVery Bad

"From the above, it is seen that only Jupiter and the Sun are good while the others have been inclined to produce evil. Hence the worst evil, viz., death, befell the native, especially because Saturn is in the 12th and Mars in the 8th."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34

This example is instructive for several reasons. First, it shows that even when multiple planets appear to be in good houses (Moon in 11th, Mercury in 11th, Venus in 1st), Vedha can neutralise all of them. Second, it demonstrates that the combination of Saturn in the 12th (bad with only 3 bindus) and Mars in the 8th (bad) is particularly dangerous — these two malefics in dusthana houses created the condition for the most extreme negative outcome.

For modern practitioners, this worked example serves as a template. When analysing any transit period, construct a similar table: list each planet's transit house, check whether it is a good or bad house, note the Ashtakavarga bindus, check for Vedha from every other planet, and then synthesise the overall picture. Only when the majority of planets are genuinely unobstructed in good houses can truly positive results be expected.

6. Combining Transits with Ashtakavarga

Raman states emphatically that transit results cannot be predicted with appreciable accuracy unless combined with Ashtakavarga. The number of benefic dots (bindus) a planet has in a particular sign determines the intensity of its transit effects. This is the quantitative dimension that transforms Gochara from a binary good/bad system into a graduated scale.

"It may be remarked in passing that unless Gochara is combined with Ashtakavarga, results cannot be predicted with appreciable accuracy. The Moon produces beneficial results provided the benefic dots there are above 4. If they are below 4, then the Moon cannot certainly do as much good as is ascribed to her."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34

The logic is straightforward:

  • If a planet transits a good house with high bindus (5+): Excellent results, full expression of the promised good.
  • If a planet transits a good house with low bindus (below 4): The good transit is weakened; expect mediocre rather than excellent results.
  • If a planet transits a bad house with high bindus: The evil is somewhat mitigated; the planet has underlying strength even in an unfavourable position.
  • If a planet transits a bad house with low bindus: The worst possible scenario; the planet is both positionally weak and quantitatively deficient.

In the worked example above, Saturn in the 12th house with only 3 bindus represents this worst-case scenario — a bad transit house compounded by insufficient Ashtakavarga strength. This makes the planet "exceedingly bad" in Raman's terminology.

For those unfamiliar with Ashtakavarga, it is a system where each planet receives benefic contributions (bindus) from all seven planets and the Ascendant across all twelve signs. The maximum possible is 8 bindus in any sign; the minimum is 0. A score of 4 is considered the neutral threshold. Raman devoted an entire separate book — Ashtakavarga System of Prediction — to this topic, indicating its importance.

7. The Three-Fold Blend: Birth Chart, Gochara and Ashtakavarga

Raman's concluding argument in this chapter is that no single predictive technique is sufficient on its own. The birth chart (with its Dasa/Bhukti periods) sets the overall framework; Gochara shows the current planetary weather; and Ashtakavarga provides the quantitative measure of intensity. Only when all three are considered together can the astrologer make truly reliable predictions.

"Astrological predictions can be accurate when the influences of birth chart are blended with those of Gochara and Ashtakavarga, together with Vedha or obstructing forces."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34

Raman is critical of practitioners who rely on a single technique:

"In the delineation of Gochara results, there does not appear to be a uniform method in the whole of India. Some rest content with describing results on the strength of the motions of Mars, Saturn and Jupiter, irrespective of the part played by the prevailing Dasa and Bhukti."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 34

This criticism remains relevant today. Many popular astrology apps and websites provide transit predictions based solely on planetary position without considering Vedha, Ashtakavarga or the native's running Dasa period. The result is generic, one-size-fits-all predictions that frequently miss the mark.

The hierarchy of analysis Raman recommends can be summarised as follows:

  1. Step 1 — Dasa/Bhukti: Determine which planets are "activated" in the current period. A planet's transit effects are amplified when it is also the Dasa or Bhukti lord.
  2. Step 2 — Gochara position: Check whether each planet is in a good or bad house from the natal Moon.
  3. Step 3 — Ashtakavarga bindus: Check the number of bindus each planet has in its current transit sign. Above 4 is strong; below 4 is weak.
  4. Step 4 — Vedha check: For every planet in a good house, verify that no other planet (with the noted exceptions) occupies the corresponding Vedha point.
  5. Step 5 — Synthesis: Weigh all factors together. If the Dasa lord is well-placed in transit with high bindus and no Vedha, expect excellent results. If the Dasa lord is badly placed with low bindus, prepare for difficulties.

Key Takeaways

  • Count from the Moon: All Gochara results are measured from the Janma Rasi (birth Moon sign), not the Ascendant. The Moon represents the mind, making it the natural reference point for how transits are experienced.
  • Slow planets dominate: Saturn gives 3-year effects, Jupiter yearly — these are the most powerful transit influences. The Sun and Mars concentrate their results in the first 10 degrees of a sign.
  • Venus is the friendliest in transit: Favourable in 9 out of 12 houses, Venus brings comfort almost everywhere. Saturn is the harshest, good in only 3 houses.
  • Vedha is essential: A planet's good transit effects are blocked if another planet occupies the corresponding obstruction point. Ignoring Vedha is, according to Raman, the primary cause of failed predictions.
  • Sun-Saturn exception: No Vedha occurs between these two. Similarly, Moon and Mercury do not obstruct each other. These exceptions must be memorised.
  • Ashtakavarga qualification: The number of bindus (benefic dots) in a sign determines whether a transit can deliver its full effect. Above 4 bindus is strong; below 4 is weak.
  • Three-fold blend required: Accurate prediction requires combining birth chart Dasa/Bhukti, Gochara transits, Ashtakavarga bindus and Vedha analysis together. No single technique is sufficient.
  • Use the worked example as a template: For any transit period, build a table listing each planet's house, bindus, Gochara status, Vedha status and net result. This systematic approach prevents errors.
