Hindu Predictive Astrology Chapter 24: Results of Dasas and Bhuktis - A Modern Guide

Hindu Predictive Astrology — Modern Reader's Guide

A chapter-by-chapter modern English guide to the classical Vedic astrology textbook by B.V. Raman, first published in 1938.

Chapter 24 of 36 · Topics: General principles for Dasa interpretation, results of each planet's Dasa in all 12 signs, detailed Bhukti results for all 9 Dasas

This is one of the longest and most practically important chapters in the entire book. Dasas are major planetary periods and Bhuktis are sub-periods within them. The Vimshottari Dasa system divides life into planetary periods totalling 120 years. Knowing what results to expect during each Dasa and Bhukti is the key to timing predictions in Vedic astrology.

Raman begins this chapter by establishing that these results should never be applied mechanically. The strength and weakness of the Dasa lord, the Bhukti lord, and even the Antara (sub-sub-period) lord must all be carefully weighed. The sign placement, house lordship, aspects received, and the constellation occupied by the period lord all modify the final outcome. A planet in exaltation gives vastly different results from the same planet in debilitation, even though the textbook descriptions may list similar themes.

"The result should be consistent with the person for whom it is intended, under the condition of life in which he is brought up as well as the physical possibility at the time."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 24

This principle is foundational. A king's chart and a commoner's chart may share identical planetary configurations, but the manifestation of those configurations will differ according to the native's station in life. Political success for a statesman means election victories; for a shopkeeper it might mean becoming head of a trade guild. The astrologer must always calibrate predictions to the individual's real-world context.

1. General Principles for Dasa Interpretation

Before diving into specific results, Raman lays down 15 essential rules that form the analytical framework for interpreting any Dasa or Bhukti. These rules represent centuries of accumulated astrological wisdom and serve as guardrails against overly literal interpretation.

"No Dasa can prove exclusively beneficial or exclusively harmful."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 24
  1. Saturn's Dasa , if it happens to be the 4th Dasa in the sequence from birth, will be unfavourable . This is a classical rule suggesting that Saturn's inherent nature of restriction intensifies when it falls in this particular sequence position.
  2. Jupiter's Dasa , if it happens to be the 6th Dasa, will be unfavourable . Even the greatest benefic can produce adverse results when sequentially misaligned. However, if Saturn and Jupiter are strong and favourably disposed, the evil effects get considerably modified.
  3. Dasas of lords of the 6th and 8th houses produce harmful results unless they acquire beneficence otherwise through exaltation, association with benefics, or lordship of auspicious houses simultaneously.
  4. Planets in Bhava sandhis (junctional points between houses) cannot produce their full results during their Dasa. They are structurally weakened, like a person standing on the threshold -- neither fully inside nor outside.
  5. A planet produces results based on its ownership, association, location and aspect . For instance, a favourable position of the lord of the 2nd will give good income and wealth during his Dasa.
  6. Dasa results are modified by Gochara (transiting planets). Even an excellent Dasa lord can deliver muted results if transiting malefics afflict key houses during that period.
  7. When Lagna is powerful, during the Dasa of lord of Lagna, favourable results occur -- rise in profession, good health and general prosperity.
  8. Lord of the 2nd gives wealth in his Dasa.
  9. Lord of the 3rd gives new friends, help to brothers, leadership, and physical pain if afflicted.
  10. A well-placed lord does good for its houses; a weak, ill-placed lord inflicts misery.
  11. Periods of lords of the 5th and 9th (trine houses) are said to be good, so much so that periods of planets joined or related with them also give rise to good.
  12. The general Dasa effect is modified by the Bhukti lord. The influences of both planets must be compounded and the relationship between them taken into account.
  13. In a malefic's Dasa, sub-periods of planets ruling the 3rd, 5th or 7th star from the natal star bring trial and tribulation.
  14. Unfavourable results arise when the sub-lord and major lord are in 6th-8th or 12th-2nd from each other respectively.
  15. Sub-period of the 5th lord in Dasa of the 9th lord (or vice versa) produces good effects -- the Dharma-Purva Punya combination.

"The lord of the Dasa has a quality of his own stamped upon him. This will again be modified by the nature of the house, the nature of the sign, the nature of the aspecting bodies, the nature of the lord of the constellation the Dasa lord is in, the favourable and unfavourable situation of the lord of Dasa in the Navamsa and various other factors."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 24

In modern practice, these 15 rules are best used as a checklist. Before predicting the results of any Dasa, the astrologer should systematically evaluate: (a) which sequence number the Dasa occupies, (b) what houses the Dasa lord owns, (c) where it is placed and what aspects it receives, (d) the relationship between the Dasa lord and Bhukti lord, and (e) current transits over sensitive points. Only after this multi-layered analysis should specific predictions be attempted.

Factor Positive Indicator Negative Indicator
House Lordship Lords of 1, 5, 9, 4, 7, 10 Lords of 6, 8, 12
Sign Placement Own sign, exaltation, friendly sign Debilitation, enemy sign
Aspects Aspected by benefics (Jupiter, Venus) Aspected by malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rahu)
Dasa-Bhukti Relationship Mutual kendras, trines, friendship 6-8, 2-12 positions; enmity
Strength High Shadbala, Vargottama Bhava Sandhi, combust, low Shadbala

2. Sun's Dasa (6 Years)

The Sun's Dasa lasts 6 years and its results revolve around themes of authority, government, father, health, and self-expression. When the Sun is strong by sign and house, this period brings recognition, leadership roles, and vitality. When weak or afflicted, it can bring conflicts with authority, health problems (especially related to the heart, eyes, and bones), and estrangement from the father.

"Political success may be predicted in the Dasa of the Sun, if he is in Aries in the 10th house. This political success will be at its maximum provided the Sun is not aspected by malefics and his position is equally strong in the Navamsa."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 24

Rahu's Dasa (18 Years)

Rahu's Dasa is one of the longest at 18 years and can be the most transformative or destructive period in life, depending on Rahu's placement. As a shadow planet ( Chaya Graha ), Rahu amplifies the characteristics of the sign and house it occupies, often bringing sudden and unexpected developments.

"Rahu is debilitated here [Scorpio] and as such, causes great havoc to the native. The results in Rahu's Dasa will be: abortion, loss of children, inclination to bid farewell to moral aspect of life, failure in business enterprises and mental discontentment."

Jupiter's Dasa (16 Years)

Jupiter's 16-year Dasa is generally considered one of the most favourable periods, as Jupiter is the greatest benefic in Vedic astrology. When exalted in Cancer, it gives extraordinary political success, promotions, humanitarian work, and unexpected wealth. However, Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn can bring the opposite -- death or illness of children, wife always ill, irreligious acts, and numerous enemies.

"Jupiter is exalted here [Cancer] and gives all beneficial results such as much political success, promotions, exalted positions, humanitarian work, national service, acquisition of wealth from unexpected sources and without efforts, journalistic success, minister of education or lands and perfect harmony in domestic life."

Saturn's Dasa (19 Years)

Saturn's Dasa is the longest single-planet period at 19 years and is often feared in traditional astrology. Yet Raman is clear that Saturn exalted in Libra produces extraordinarily good results -- travelling, establishing branches of business, public lectures, honour and respect for the full 19 years. The key variable is always Saturn's actual chart strength.

"The worst period in a man's career, unexpected losses, disappointments in every undertaking, misunderstandings among relatives and friends and increase in the number of enemies."

B.V. Raman on Saturn in Aries (debilitated), Chapter 24

Key sign placements for Saturn's Dasa:

  • Libra (exalted): Travelling, establishing business branches, public lectures, honour and respect for 19 years, domestic happiness.

  • Aries (debilitated): Worst period in career, unexpected losses, disappointments in every undertaking, increase of enemies.

Mercury's Dasa (17 Years)

Mercury's 17-year period brings themes of intellect, commerce, communication, education, and mathematics into focus. Mercury in its own sign Virgo creates what Raman calls "the most auspicious and happy period of life" with favour of kings, undisturbed health, marriage, and unexpected gains. Mercury debilitated in Pisces brings trouble from thieves, dysentery, litigation, mental derangement, and nervous breakdown.

Ketu's Dasa (7 Years)

Ketu's 7-year Dasa, like Rahu, depends entirely on its sign placement and the planets it associates with. Ketu brings themes of spirituality, detachment, sudden events, and past-life karma. In Sagittarius, Ketu produces perfect domestic harmony, favour from aristocrats, and moral elevation. In Gemini, the later years bring venereal troubles, death of a near relation, and loss of reputation.

7. Venus' Dasa (20 Years)

Venus' Dasa is the longest of all at 20 years, making it a defining chapter of any life where it operates. Venus governs love, marriage, luxury, art, vehicles, wealth, and physical beauty. When Venus is exalted in Pisces, this two-decade period brings high political power, promotion, charity, and domestic happiness. In its own sign Taurus, Venus grants a life of great ease, beautiful company, and realised ambitions.

"A life of great ease and indulgence throughout the period of 20 years, enjoyment of much happiness, company of beautiful girls and joy through association with them, travels on seas to foreign countries particularly southern, all ambitions of life fairly realised."

B.V. Raman on Venus in Taurus, Chapter 24

However, Venus debilitated in Virgo is extremely challenging -- quarrels with spouse, separation, mortgage of all property, trouble in the generative organ leading to surgical operation, arthritis, nervous breakdown, and much grief. Venus in Leo also gives mental disease, exile, and dangerous sickness to spouse or child.

8. Practical Application: How to Read Dasa-Bhukti Results

Raman's approach to Dasa interpretation is layered and nuanced. He insists throughout this chapter that the textbook results are starting points, not final verdicts. The astrologer must synthesize multiple factors before arriving at a prediction. Here is a practical step-by-step method distilled from his teachings:

"A number of combinations are given below which give the probable results a particular planet will produce during its Dasa. The student must be careful in applying these principles to practical horoscopes. He must bear in mind that they should not be applied verbatim."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 24

Step 1: Assess the Dasa Lord's Strength

Check the Dasa lord's sign placement (exalted, own, friendly, neutral, enemy, debilitated), house position, aspects received, conjunctions, and Navamsa dignity. A planet strong in both Rasi and Navamsa delivers its positive indications with full force. A planet strong in Rasi but weak in Navamsa gives initially promising but ultimately hollow results.

Step 2: Evaluate House Lordship

The houses the Dasa lord owns determine the areas of life activated. Lords of kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) bring action and visibility. Lords of trikonas (1, 5, 9) bring fortune and merit. Lords of dusthanas (6, 8, 12) bring challenges unless they simultaneously own a good house or are associated with benefics.

Step 3: Compound the Bhukti Lord

The Bhukti lord modifies the Dasa lord's theme. If Dasa lord and Bhukti lord are mutual friends, occupy kendras from each other, or share trine relationships, the sub-period amplifies the positive Dasa themes. If they are in 6-8 or 2-12 positions, the sub-period introduces conflict and friction.

Step 4: Check Gochara (Transit)

Even a favorable Dasa-Bhukti combination can be dampened by adverse transits of Saturn or Jupiter over sensitive houses. Conversely, adverse Dasa-Bhukti results can be partially mitigated by supportive transits.

Step 5: Apply Contextual Judgment

Adapt the prediction to the native's age, gender, occupation, cultural context, and current life stage. "Birth of children" for a 70-year-old may indicate birth of grandchildren. "Royal favour" in modern times translates to government recognition, promotions, or approval from persons in authority.

"If he is aspected by Saturn who may be in Aquarius, then in spite of the Sun being in Aries, complete political success cannot be and ought not to be predicted."

B.V. Raman, Chapter 24

Key Takeaways

  • Never apply rules verbatim: No Dasa is exclusively beneficial or exclusively harmful. Always consider the planet's actual chart position, dignity, and the aspects it receives.
  • Compound influences: The Dasa lord's quality is modified by the Bhukti lord. Consider the relationship between them -- mutual kendras and trines are favorable; 6th-8th or 12th-2nd positions create conflict.
  • Sign placement is decisive: The same planet's Dasa gives vastly different results depending on whether it is exalted, debilitated, or in its own sign. Compare Saturn in Libra (honor for 19 years) versus Saturn in Aries (worst period in career).
  • Transit overlay: Dasa results are further modified by Gochara (current planetary transits). A strong Dasa can be weakened by adverse transits and vice versa.
  • Context is everything: Results must be consistent with the person's station, circumstances, and the physical possibilities of the time. Political success for a merchant differs from political success for a statesman.
  • Sequence matters: Saturn as the 4th Dasa and Jupiter as the 6th Dasa carry special adverse significance regardless of their chart placement, though strong dignities can mitigate this.
  • Strength factors: A planet's Sthanabala (positional), Digbala (directional), Kalabala (temporal), Naisargikabala (natural), and Chestabala (motional) strengths all modify the Dasa results in specific ways.
  • Bhava Sandhi weakens: Planets at the junctional points between houses cannot deliver full results during their periods -- a subtle but important consideration often overlooked by beginners.
