Part 13: House Strength

Bhava Bala: Measuring House Power
We've measured planetary strength completely. But houses (Bhavas) also have strength! A strong planet in a weak house can't fully deliver. A weak planet in a strong house gets amplified support.
Bhava Bala reveals which life areas are empowered in a chart. The 10th house governs career—is it strong enough to grant professional success? The 7th rules marriage—can it sustain relationships?
Three Components of Bhava Bala
1. Bhavadhipathi Bala (Lord's Strength)
The house lord's total Shadbala directly contributes. If 7th lord Venus has 480 shashtiamsas total Shadbala, the 7th house inherits that strength.
2. Bhava Digbala (House Directional Strength)
Houses have inherent directional power:
- 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th (Kendras): Maximum strength
- 2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th (Panaparas): Moderate strength
- 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th (Apoklimas): Minimum strength
3. Bhava Drishti Bala (Aspect Strength to House)
Just as planets aspect each other, they also aspect houses. Sum all planetary aspects to the house midpoint (Bhavamadhya), counting benefic aspects as positive, malefic as negative.
Formula: Bhava Bala = Bhavadhipathi Bala + Bhava Digbala + Bhava Drishti Bala
Example: 7th House Strength
Let's calculate 7th house (marriage/partnerships) Bhava Bala in our Standard Horoscope:
| Component | Value |
|---|---|
| 7th Lord: Moon | Total Shadbala = 455.5 |
| 7th House Type: Kendra (angular) | Maximum Digbala = 60.0 |
| Aspects to 7th Bhavamadhya: | (Calculate using Drishti formulas) |
| Total 7th Bhava Bala | ~515+ Shashtiamsas |
Note: Full aspect calculation requires applying Drishti formulas for each planet's angle to 7th house midpoint (118° 27'), then summing benefic/malefic aspects.
Practical Application
Calculate Bhava Bala for all 12 houses to identify:
- Strongest houses: These life areas flourish naturally
- Weakest houses: These require extra effort or face challenges
- Planet-House synergy: Strong planet + strong house = maximum manifestation
Prediction Principle: During a planet's Dasa/Bhukti, it activates houses it rules. If both planet AND house are strong, exceptional results manifest. If planet is strong but house is weak (or vice versa), results are diluted.
What's Next: Predicting Results
We've built the complete measurement framework—planetary strength (Shadbala) and house strength (Bhava Bala). Now the payoff: prediction.
Part 14 covers Ishta and Kashta Phalas—measuring the good and bad effects planets will deliver during their Dasa/Bhukti periods. B.V. Raman provides formulas to calculate:
- Ishta Phala: Benefic results (favorable outcomes)
- Kashta Phala: Malefic results (difficulties, obstacles)
- Ratio of good to bad: Predicting overall life trajectory
