Can Astrology Predict Divorce? 9 Red Flags in Your Birth Chart
B.V. Raman didn't shy away from the hard truths. In his marriage chapter, he listed specific planetary combinations that indicate marital unhappiness, discord, and even separation.
These aren't vague predictions — they're precise configurations that experienced astrologers have observed for centuries. Each one points to a specific type of friction: temperamental clashes, infidelity, emotional coldness, or outright incompatibility.
As Raman himself wrote: "Marriage is a most complicated structure made up as it is of a whole series of subjective and objective facts of a very heterogeneous nature."

The 9 Red Flags from Muhurtha
These are the specific planetary combinations B.V. Raman identified as warnings for marriage. Each is drawn directly from classical texts and verified through decades of practical observation.
-
Mars in the 7th, unaspected by benefics
"If Kuja is in the 7th house unaspected or not joined by benefics, there will be frequent quarrels in the married life often leading to misunderstandings and separation."
Mars brings aggression and impatience into the house of partnership. Without the calming influence of Jupiter or Venus, this energy has no outlet except conflict. -
Saturn in the 8th, square to Mars
"When Saturn is in the 8th house, and particularly in a square to Mars, the married life will be crossed by discord, lack of mutual understanding and want of real attachment."
The 8th house governs the longevity of the marriage bond. Saturn here creates emotional distance, and when Mars throws a square aspect, it ignites friction on top of that coldness. -
Leo Lagna with Saturn in 2nd
"The husband will be subservient to the wife carrying out all her orders."
While this may not sound like a "red flag" in modern terms, Raman noted this combination creates an imbalance in the relationship dynamic that can breed resentment over time. -
Saturn in the 7th
"Saturn in the 7th house is also indicative of unhappiness in marriage unless Saturn happens to be either lord of Lagna or lord of the 7th."
Saturn delays, restricts, and cools. In the 7th house, it creates emotional walls between partners. The key exception is when Saturn owns the 1st or 7th house — then it acts as a stabilizer rather than a disruptor. -
Sun and Venus in 5th, 7th, or 9th
"According to Prasna Marga, if the Sun and Venus occupy the 5th, 7th, or 9th house then the native will lack marital happiness."
The Sun's burning nature scorches Venus (the significator of love and romance) when they occupy these relationship-sensitive houses together, drying up affection and warmth. -
Strong malefic in the 4th (especially Mars)
"A strong malefic in the 4th, particularly Mars, is not conducive to conjugal happiness."
The 4th house represents domestic peace and the home environment. A powerful malefic here disrupts the very foundation upon which married life is built. -
7th house Navamsa in malefic sign
"When the longitude of the 7th house falls in a malefic Navamsa, frequent quarrels and misunderstandings will ensue."
The Navamsa chart (D-9) is the chart of marriage in Vedic astrology. When the 7th cusp falls in a sign ruled by Mars, Saturn, or other malefics in this divisional chart, it colours the entire marital experience with difficulty. -
Lords of 7th and 1st as enemies
"If the lords of the 7th and 1st are friends then the native will be loved by his wife. Otherwise there will be no harmony."
The 1st house represents the self; the 7th represents the spouse. When the planetary rulers of these houses are natural enemies, the native and their partner are fundamentally at odds in temperament and approach to life. -
Venus afflicted by Ketu and Mars
"Ketu-Venus-Mars (or Saturn) denotes danger of scandal in marriage."
Venus is the karaka (significator) of marriage itself. When afflicted by shadow planet Ketu and fiery Mars simultaneously, the native's romantic life becomes chaotic, secretive, and prone to scandal or unconventional entanglements.
The Case Study from the Book
Raman didn't just list rules — he presented a real chart example of a broken Hindu marriage to show how these red flags manifest in practice.
He described the chart as follows: "Lord of the 7th Mars is in the 11th in combination with Rahu both in the constellations of Venus and aspected by Saturn... Venus, Kalatrakaraka in his turn, is much afflicted by association with Ketu, situated in the constellation of Rahu and aspected by Mars. Both the lord of the 7th and Venus have been much afflicted."
Notice how multiple red flags stack up in a single chart: the 7th lord afflicted by Rahu and Saturn, Venus damaged by Ketu and Mars. This isn't just one warning sign — it's a convergence of several.
The result was devastating: "Before marriage, the girl's father had been advised to reject the boy... the native was leading a profligate life and never loved her."
The woman ultimately returned to her parents' house. The warning signs were clearly visible in the chart but were ignored by the family.
Raman's lesson was blunt: "It is the duty of the parents to consult learned astrologers and not to entrust the work of comparing horoscopes to all persons who have no practical experience."

Red Flags Are Not Death Sentences
It is important to understand that these combinations indicate tendencies, not certainties. A single red flag in an otherwise strong chart does not doom a marriage.
Several neutralizing factors can offset these afflictions:
- Jupiter's aspect: The aspect of Jupiter on the 7th house or on Venus can counteract much of the negativity from malefic influences.
- Benefic conjunctions: Venus or Jupiter joining a malefic in the 7th house softens the harsh effects considerably.
- Strong 7th lord: If the lord of the 7th house is well-placed, exalted, or in a friendly sign, it can overpower individual afflictions.
- Ownership exception: As Raman noted, Saturn in the 7th is not harmful when it is the lord of the 1st or 7th house.
Even Saturn's effect is more nuanced than it first appears. Raman observed: "Saturn in the 7th confers stability in the marriage but the husband or wife manifests coldness and not warmth." Stability without warmth is not necessarily divorce — it is a different kind of challenge.
There is also the principle of matching afflictions: "When certain afflictions are present in one horoscope it is said that they could be mitigated by having the native married to a partner whose horoscope has similar afflictions." Two people with Kuja Dosha, for instance, can cancel each other's Mars affliction.
Finally, proper Muhurtha (election of the marriage time) serves as a powerful remedy. Raman wrote: "The Maharshis have claimed that by electing a proper time or Muhurtha for marriage, several of the evil indications in the charts of the couple can be minimised to a great extent." Choosing the right wedding date and time is itself an act of astrological protection.
Beyond Individual Charts: The Match
Individual red flags are only half the picture. The match between two charts matters even more than what appears in either chart alone.
The 12-Kuta system specifically evaluates how two charts interact across dimensions of temperament, sexual compatibility, longevity, emotional harmony, and spiritual alignment.
Some of the most serious warnings come from Kuta mismatches:
- Rajju Kuta mismatch: "If they fall in Sira (head) husband's death is likely; if in Kantha (neck) the wife may die; if in Udara (stomach) the children may die." This is considered one of the most dangerous incompatibilities.
- Vedha (affliction pairs): Certain birth star combinations actively repel each other. When both partners have stars that form a Vedha pair, the marriage faces constant invisible friction that neither partner can easily explain.
- Nadi Dosha: When both partners share the same Nadi (nervous energy type), it warns of health issues for offspring and a lack of magnetic attraction.
Raman was clear about the practical value of this analysis: "If astrological advices are properly heeded to, there will be fewer tragedies than at present and less marital infidelity."
