How It Works

This tool scans a time range for 18 planetary configurations that BV Raman identified as correlating with major earthquakes. Each indicator carries a weight (1x, 2x, or 3x) based on how frequently it appears in historical earthquake charts. The tool produces a weighted composite risk score — High (≥8), Moderate (4-7), or Low (0-3).

The calculations use the Swiss Ephemeris for precise planetary positions, applying BV Raman's rules derived from decades of studying earthquake charts published in The Astrological Magazine.

The 18 Indicators (Weighted Scoring)

From BV Raman's study of 200+ earthquake charts, organized by predictive strength:

Critical (x3 weight) — Present in virtually every major earthquake
  1. Eclipse proximity — "Earthquakes generally occur at the times of eclipses" (p.66). Solar or lunar eclipse within the eclipse season.
  2. Moon-Mercury exact conjunction (≤3°) — "The most important feature is the closeness of the Moon and Mercury" (p.65). The single most frequent indicator.
  3. Jupiter-Saturn opposition — "Jupiter and Saturn are in opposite signs" (p.73). Associated with the strongest quakes (Assam 1950).
  4. Jupiter-Saturn conjunction — "Two of the worst earthquakes occurred in 1960 due to Jupiter-Saturn remaining in the same sign" (p.73).
Strong (x2 weight) — Cited in most earthquake charts
  1. New Moon proximity (±3 tithis) — Bihar 1934, China 1976, Agadir 1960, Iran 1990.
  5. Moon-Mercury conjunction (≤10°) — Broader orb version tracking general closeness.
  6. Major planets in mutual Kendras/Trikonas — "Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Jupiter in mutual angles or trines" (p.66 rule 3).
  7. Planets clustered in narrow arc (≤40°) — "The rest were all clustered within an arc of 38°" (p.65). China 1976.
Supporting (x1 weight) — Confirming indicators
  1. Major planets in earthy signs — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. "Major planets generally occupy earthy signs" (p.66 rule 5).
  2. Major planets in airy signs — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. "Seven bodies in mutual Trikona in airy signs" (p.68).
  3. Indra (Prithvi) Mandala nakshatra — Moon in Rohini, Anuradha, Jyeshta, Uttarashadha, Sravana, Dhanishta (p.28, p.66 rule 6).
  4. Vayu Mandala nakshatra — Moon in Aswini, Mrigasira, Punarvasu, Uttara, Hasta, Chitta, Swati (p.28, p.66 rule 6).
  5. Jupiter in Kendra from Ascendant — "Jupiter is placed in an angle from the rising sign" (p.59). Location-dependent.
  6. Moon near perigee — "Moon was in perigee" (p.69). Amplifies gravitational stress.
  7. Malefics near meridian (4th/10th house) — "Mars was exactly in the 10th house" (p.71). Location-dependent.

Understanding the Risk Score

The composite risk score is calculated by summing all active indicators with their weights:

Risk LevelWeighted ScoreInterpretation
HIGH 8+ Multiple critical and strong indicators aligned. Historically correlates with actual major earthquakes.
MODERATE 4–7 Several supporting indicators active. Elevated seismic risk window.
LOW 0–3 Few or no significant indicators. Normal background conditions.

Maximum possible score: ~35 (if every indicator fires simultaneously). In practice, scores above 12 are extremely rare and correspond to once-in-a-decade planetary configurations. A score of 8+ typically means at least one critical indicator (eclipse, Jupiter-Saturn aspect, or exact Moon-Mercury conjunction) is active alongside several strong ones.

Historical Accuracy — Published Predictions

BV Raman published earthquake predictions in The Astrological Magazine months or years before the events. These are documented, verifiable predictions:

Prediction Published What Was Predicted What Actually Happened Lead Time
November 1977 "There is a possibility of a major earthquake about the area of Iran" Iran earthquake, Sep 16, 1978 — 15,000+ killed ~10 months
January 1989 "An earthquake is possible in California about August-September" Loma Prieta earthquake, Oct 17, 1989 — magnitude 6.9 ~9 months
January 1989 "A major natural disaster such as an earthquake is likely near Sinkiang about the time of the Jupiter-Saturn opposition" China earthquake, October 1989 ~9 months
November 1989 "Jupiter-Mars opposition, Saturn-Mars conjunction, Jupiter-Saturn opposition capable of triggering earthquakes in Iran, Assam, China and Mexico" Iran (Manjil-Rudbar) earthquake, Jun 21, 1990 — 40,000+ killed ~7 months

As BV Raman challenged: "I would like to ask which seismologist in the whole history of seismology, not only in our country but anywhere in the world, came close to making such a prediction in spite of all the resources and funds being spent on this science." (p.81)

Disclaimer

This tool is based on classical Vedic astrology research by Dr. BV Raman and is intended for educational and research purposes. It is not a substitute for scientific seismological monitoring. Earthquake prediction remains an unsolved problem in both science and astrology. Use this tool to study the fascinating correlations between planetary movements and seismic activity.

As BV Raman himself acknowledged (p.65-66): "The paradox is that though there are astrological principles for predicting earthquakes, some clues are yet to be discovered. There is some snag somewhere." Much work remains in precisely locating the site of earthquake occurrence.
